Link to Basilisk II will come later (do some patches, still need testing..)

SheepShaver's speed is acceptable on my i915GL box and Basilisk II just fly in fullscreen mode. :-)

Sound works ok. but network is unimplemented under OSX. Although I think it's possible, later I'll try to do it...

PS: Basilisk II is a m68k emulator capable to run System 7.x - Mac OS 8.1

SheepShaver is a PPC emulator capable to run Mac OS 8.5 - Mac OS 9.0.4

Erm.. I dunno how significant it is, but Sheepshaver was involved in the screwup that "ate my harddrive" last night.. first symptom was disk imges that refused to open or unmount, then my home directory turned into a file, finally I ended up having to do a clean install, losing everything on my desktop and some of the stuff in my home dir.

Like I said, sheepshaver might be coincidental, and it's an OS in development, after all....

It's all ok with your HDD. Did you hear about HFS+ and extended attributes?

Warn to all SheepShaver users - set "extfs" key in your config file to separate folder created specially for exchange between osx and classic, not root folder / !!!

You cant see some of your files and folders cause classic macos set some extended attrs to these files and osx for some reason did not uderstand it correctly.

To remove extended attrs from file or folder use SetFile command.

/Developer/Tools/SetFile -a avbstclinmedz MyFile

Thanks! that sort of works, but needs me to restart the finder to see the changes, otherwise it hangs. The tip about setting the extfs folder to somewhere specific for that purpose is probably a good one, I set it to my home dir, and thats where it all went wrong.

(Edit) Sure enough, all my files were fine! however I may have done some other damage, as I now have odd behaviour in Deer Park..

as per the READ ME FIRST!.rtf, the setting is in your .sheepshaver_prefs.

Set it to a new empty folder, that won't be used for anything else, as per Faust93's advice above.

If you get it to work, I'd like to know what version af MacOS you used. It refused to install the 9.0 I had here, I know I've got an 8.? somewhere in the attic...

Good luck!

Got it working, os9.04 is latest supported OS for sheepshaver, can't get into full screen mode though.

It boots rather slow, but once booted it's usable.

Changing windows mode in prefs doesn't work in osx as it does in win or linux though.

If I could just compile the latest alpha version of mac-on-mac (which always fails), or could find a precompiled version of it just like the 0.1 version, it would be much faster as it isn't really the same kind of emulation.

Mac-on-mac couldn't possibly work for at least two reasons:

1. Mac-on-mac virtualizes a PowerPC using your real PowerPC hardware. Since you don't have a PowerPC to begin with, it wouldn't be able to work.

2. Mac-on-mac isn't Tiger-compatible.

  • 1 month later...

there is a new version of sheepshaver dated nov30 2005 available true gwenole website http://gibix.net it as partial ethernet support ,i say partial cuz i got a hard time getting it to boot whit the net driver and ounce i got it to boot with it i was able to setup the internet setting and try it but upon the next reboot it would not boot with the net driver enable even with extension on or off

but if you try it without net driver enable in the gui ,yes it as a gui now ,you will notice that boot time is a bit slower but that overall performance are better

also you can now boot in full screen

Yea, could you please do that. It's gone. I'll test it and see how it works on 10.4.4 on my new iMac and MacBook Pro when they come in. Also, I will be glad to assist in porting Basilisk.

Hi there,

Although i have managed in the past to use SheepShaver on my winblows pc with success, i can't seem to manage it through OSX86.

One thing i noticed after opening the SheepShaver icon by choosing show package contents, is that in the folder where the application is (Terminal icon), there's also a prefs file (another terminal icon).

When i start the app from within the folder and terminal shows up, i can see the message that the ROM file can't be opened.

I have tried every single possible combination, renaming the rom, i have also tried by having a prefs file in the emulator's main folder, i have also tried 3 different ROM images. One that's the 8.6rom with a size of 1.9 MB, another from my faithful 7100 which is 3 MB, and another from my 7300 (with G3@400) which is 4MB in size.

Can someone shoot any ideas this way? And i'd appreciate people sharing their prefs files with us, so we can compare. I'll be sending mine off soon. I have read every thing i could find from the help guides and file sites, but nothing seems to have worked.

Thanx in advance.

Well, as about the ROM image thing, i just tried both the 8.5 and 8.6 OS CDROM files, and the symptoms are still there!

Anyway, i re-downloaded the latest file, and still the same behavior. One thing that's weird about the prefs file, is that in the exampes and guides everyone seems to mention it as a .sheepshaver_prefs name.

If you try to create your own using "." as a prefix, the system tells you that this is a system prefix and the file will be hidden. Try removing that kind of filenames!

Has anyone used the prefs file without the . prefix in front?

Can someone tell us all a step-by-step way to success, and with what version of the Mac OS?

Thanx once again in advance

Hi,

You just copy the sheepshaver_prefs file to your home folder, edit it so it reflects your situation and save it.

Then, in a terminal window you make sure you are in your home folder and enter:

"cp sheepshaver_prefs .sheepshaver_prefs" and you are all set.
