I am getting one here soon since I am selling my PC now. So happy! Getting me a Mac Mini core duo and smiling all the way. EDIT: I wonder if a core solo is not a bad deal on ebay. When I get one, I will do this: photo editing from digital camera looking at audio files capture some video, very small What do I do? Ghost hunting. Yes, seriously like Ghost Hunters on SciFi channel (www.scifi.com/ghosthunters). I don't need alot, but I do open some files around 200 megs sometimes. Just wondering. Thanks. So many think the Mac Mini isn't a full computer, but when they look at a Macbook (old core duo version) they "know" it rocks. Same thing, just no lcd and different packaging. wow Posted November 17, 2006 Share Posted November 17, 2006 512 is no enough for serious work, take 1024 as a minimum. 2 gb is better. personly i would stay away from macbooks or anything portable. I i see how many people coplain about broken apple notebooks , its scary. Since production moved to china, all apple hardware went from A-quality to cheap B-stuff. Apple also has the name to let you pay havenly if something needs to fixed after the one year garanty. Sometimes almost 80% what a new computer cost. Epson's new system is slightly heavier than the Mac mini, but ships standard with a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor and support for a 2.33GHz version of the chip. The system is customizable for storage and can ship with as little as 40GB or as much as 160GB of hard disk storage, according to Electronista. All models ship with DVD burners, include two front-mounted USB ports in addition to four at the rear, include a 56K modem as well as Ethernet connectivity, and offers built-in VGA display output. Detosx Posted November 23, 2006 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Unless you want to play games, the Mini is a cracking wee computer, gorgeous. I am using an older spec one to which I added an external 160gig firewire hard drive which has a higher 7200 spin speed than the internal one; doing so speeded it up noticeably. You need to be careful and make sure you buy one that is compatible with Macs, though. I constantly read that bumping up the memory also helps if you buy an older spec one on ebay, but I rarely multitask heavily so slow downs and brief freezes are rarely a problem for me. For a decent turn of speed for multimedia work the newer spec models are, as you can imagine, a better way to go. Though no good for games, the intigrated G950 graphics chip is fine for basic multimedia work, I am told, and reviews say it runs Vista and XP's GUI at a good clip of speed. That said, I don't know many Mac users who have gone back to using Windows. If you have a lot of Windows software, having the option makes sense. Keep in mind there is a lot of good free and legal software out there for the Apple platform. Appleworks and iLife come with the Mini, which covers your multimedia and office needs. You can download NeoOffice, which gives you a full office suite for free, based on OpenOffice - it can load and save Microsoft and other formats. I have an external USB2 DVD burner (Lite-on), so the entry level Mini would be my choice; it has only a CD burner/DVD reader. I don't think you are going to notice much of a difference with the faster processor model unless you are a graphics designer, video editor and so on. Hope that helps! Keep in mind that you have to buy the mouse and the keyboard separately! As with most things Apple, the Mini is a head turner; few people regret buying them, many are envious of those who have them. I have read the xbenchmarks but there are great deals on ebay with bundles of hardware with the solo. My hackintosh has 512 ram, but even if I went with 1 gig, a solo should be fine. It's the standard model (1.66, 512) and runs as smoothly as my macbook did in that job (at 2ghz/2.0gb), pretty impressive. It runs azureus "the memory hog" all day and night, no problems, and I can happily watch my downloaded tv with no lag, no pauses in front row, just perfect.
