Titan/Natit crashes and burns with most 7950GT & 7900GT/GTO/GTX 512MB cards

First off, my config:

Asus P5NLD2-VM 2.0

Core2 Duo E6600

2GB OCZ RAM

eVGA GeForce 7950GT KO 512MB

JaS 10.4.8 Reseed / Semthex kernel

With Titan installed, I get this:

Nov 5 09:10:39 localhost kernel[0]: Titan: By omni, built November 4, 2006

Nov 5 09:10:39 localhost kernel[0]: Titan: Testing for NVidia card...

Nov 5 09:10:39 localhost kernel[0]: Titan: Found

Nov 5 09:10:39 localhost kernel[0]: Titan: All set, cross your fingers!

<SYSTEM CRASHES>

Then the screen goes black and I can't access the system. Hard reboot is required. Or, I'll get a graphical notice telling me that I have to reboot the system. Oddly enough, this notice is not in 1024x768...

After using Neopheus's Natit installer, I get this:

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting device_type=NVDA,Parent

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting @0,device_type=display

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting @1,device_type=display

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting @0,compatible=NVDA,NVMac

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting @1,compatible=NVDA,NVMac

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting @0,name=NVDA,Display-A

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting @1,name=NVDA,Display-B

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting @0,fboffset=0x20000

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: Natit: Setting model=NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost kernel[0]: AppleIntel8254XEthernet: Detected 82573L on PCI-E (x1)

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost mDNSResponder-108.2 (Aug 25 2006 14: 50:48)[56]: starting

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost memberd[63]: memberd starting up

Nov 5 16:22:09 localhost lookupd[67]: lookupd (version 369.6) starting - Sun Nov 5 16:22:09 2006

<SYSTEM LOADS A BIT MORE...THEN CRASHES>

And the screen then goes black...then comes back on with no picture and the system's hung. A hard reboot is required

I've tried both DVI ports with no luck, and have used DVI->Analog adapters with no luck. I've gotten a Radeon X1650 Pro working on the same system with no difficulties previously. Do any gurus out there have any insight? I know I'm not alone with this issue.

***UPDATE - 11/8/2006***

I spoke with np_ and a few others on this matter. Updating geforce.kext, nvdan40, etc. with the card's correct DeviceID didn't help whatsoever. There's been one report of a Point of View 7950GT 512MB card working...otherwise, nothing.

7900GS 256MB cards seem to work from PNY and eVGA. I replaced my evga 7950GT KO with a PNY 7900GS and Titan worked fine without plist editing. Please post your mileage on these cards. Maybe we can find a fix and have 512MB cards running well in OSX86 too. :gathering:

Added DeviceID to NVDANV40Hal.kext and NVDAResman.kext.

Drop Titan.kext into /System/Library/Extensions/

1. open Terminal

2. sudo -s

3. chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/

4. chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV40Hal.kext

5. chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAResman.kext

6. chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/Titan.kext

7. Delete Extensions.kextcache and Extensions.mkext

8. reboot

Where in the files are you adding the device ID? Could you copy/paste the fields in their respective files here? What kind of card are you running?

in info.plist Added DeviceID

<string>NVDA,NVMac</string>

<key>IOPCIMatch</key>

<string>0x011010de&0xfff8ffff 0x00c310de&0xfff8ffff 0x017910de 0x018010de&0xfff8ffff 0x018810de 0x018910de 0x020010de&0xfff8ffff 0x025010de&0xfff8ffff 0x028010de&0xfff8ffff 0x030010de&0xfff8ffff 0x031010de&0xfff8ffff 0x031910de 0x034910de</string>

This card also has the exact same syndrome:

MSI 7900 GTO

I have tested Titan versions 1-3 and Natit versions 1-2. I have tried deleting GeForce.kext, which got rig of the kernel panic but the black screen remained. I'm not sure how to proceed from here, maybe test on varying the options that Titan and Natit set? XFX 7600GS on the same machine works wonderfully.

Could the topic of this thread be adjusted so that it does not sound like it's only about 7950? This definetly concerns more cards, at least many 7900GT and all 7900GTO that i'm aware of, most probably also 7900GTX.

I have an MSI 7900GT and I get to the bootup screen (mouse icon) but everything looks like a big checkerboard with Black and white .. If I click in the right areas, you can see the taskbar apear (in its black and white) but you can't recognise anything.. Nothing really crashes, you just cant see anything. This is with 8.8.1 kernel (neb) and both titan/natit... Any ideas?

I have exactly the same issue here :

JaS 10.4.8 DVD Reseed / Semthex

Asus P5W DH Deluxe

Leadtek Geforce 7950 GT TDH

The screen shows a weird graphical "reboot your system", of course in my native resolution (1280x1024), and not in 1024... It's really strange. I bought these parts to install OSX, and only thing that really don't work is the 7950, please HELP !!!

To the best of my knowledge, unless we can find a way to get the driver to work with 512MB cards, you're better off with a 7900GT from a known-working brand like eVGA. :/

I am sure that it can be fixed, it is only a difference in memory size, this should work as it works with the same architecture...

I hope that in a few days somedy will find the answer.

However, some guys apparently reported that their 7950GT worked well, does someone know how they managed to make it alive ?

Does anyone know what is the IRC chan with titan support ?

Thanks

im thinking this problem will be solved if apple releases a mac that uses 512mb VRAM.. until then, i doubt the kexts will be able to work with this..

Well Apple do have the Quadro FX 4500 that uses 512Mb as a BTO option for the MacPro. So I assume that the drivers must be able to handle 512Mb VRAM. The question is though, what is stopping it from working.

The FX 4500 has the G70 core whereas I believe that my 7900GTO has a G71 core, so thats on difference.

this is kind of weird. my geforce 6150 onboard has 128 MB maximum. however when i check the properties in my nvidia settings windows it says i have 512 MB even though i obviously dont. maybe this puts me in the same boat as you guys... not sure. im about to try nvidia's latest driver in windows and see if that changes.

Got it working (Finally) on my MSI NX7900GT - VT2D256E!! CI/QE are now a go!! I am excited as I fought with this for a few days. Ended up reinstalling from 10.4.8 seed (8.8.1 Semthex kernel) with pretty much nothing else.. Booted up, added device id to the NVDANV40Hal.kext, rm -rf Extension.kext & .mkext, kextcache -k Extensions, repaired permissions, Natit installer and then it booted up working fully!

Glad to finally get this going - it is looking good for some of the 7900GT guys!!

You're using a "turbocache" integrated GPU. You've got a turbocache GPU, that will use system memory for its framebuffer as well.

Do you think it is safe to flash my 7950 GT 512Mb with a bios from the same manufacturer, but for the 7950GT card with only 256Mb ? (Leadtek)

Does anyone have some news about that issue ? It's really annoying, it's the only thing which is missing for me :thumbsdown_anim:
