stangn99
I am looking for buy an LCD monitor for my Powermac G5 and my Hackintosh. I will be using the 1 LCD moniotor with a switch to switch between the 2 computers. I would like a 23" monitor that has the same / better specs as the Apple Display, but a little cheaper in price. Is there such thing? I've searched around and apparently only the Dell 23" is equivelent...but people are saying the color is not as sharp/vibrant on the dell than apple's cinema display. Color is VERY important for me. I need it to be vibrant and sharp. Any help would be apprecaited. Thanks.

SaberSHO
If you are looking at 23inch, i dont recommend reading a review about the 20inch models. They have COMPLETELY different screens...
rollfaster
I've been lovin' my dell 2405fpw for a number of months now, excellent monitor. I think they've released a newer revision since this one as well, I'd highly recommend it! -RF

They have COMPLETELY different screens... you are probably right...like i said, I didn't understand 1/2 the {censored} on the review. I dont know much about monitors. I will keep this info in mind! Thanks! I've been lovin' my dell 2405fpw for a number of months now, excellent monitor. I think they've released a newer revision since this one as well, I'd highly recommend it! -RF Thanks for the input! How do you find the color quality? are the blacks rich? or dull? The dell is a couple of hundred bucks cheaper..i just want to make sure its worth it. Also, are you using the dell 2405fpw on the hackintosh? if so, is it comparable to the cinema display IN YOUR OPTINION? Thanks a bunch everything! rollfaster
Honestly, the colors are great. Blacks are very black, not as shnazzy as a little xbrite display or anything, but I haven't a single reason to complain. I am using it with my hackintosh, and I'd say that technically it is very similar to the ACD, just the bezel and controls don't have the same aesthetic. But if you're running a hackintosh, then the aesthetic probably doesn't matter to you. I'm running DVI off of an ATI x850, and everything looks great (QE/CI, mouse tearing, 1600x1200, no 1920x1200, but that depends on your graphics card). You should be able to find a pretty cheap one new on ebay, I got mine MONTHS ago for less than $800, so peep around.
phor2zero
I've heard great things about the Dell widescreen monitors, but I'm using 19" widescreen and a 47" 1080p Westinghouse models. I've been extremely pleased with my Westinghouse monitors. The quality is as perfect as I could want and the prices are astonishingly low.
stangn99
Great info! Thanks a bunch guys. I think I have made my decision. Im running my hackintosh with a x1600 xt with no mouse tearing and QE/CI enabled. I plan to use the widescreen for both the hackintosh and my dual 2.0 G5 with a display switch...so i can switch back and forth. now im just trying to figure out whats the difference is b/w the 2405fpw vs. 2407FPW I believe the 2407 just offers a couple of more features. The price is great!
rgb
Yes, Apple and Dell are the same panel, but the grade is different. I can sure that Apple chooses A grade panel, especially good for photo retouching, due to the build-in calbrated ICC profile. Also, it has metel case and firewire hub and 100% match for mac. I am using 30" cinema display with my MBP and hackintosh, it works just great!! NO tearing, color blending. I did tried dell monitor at show room, connected with my MBP. It can display but there's color blending, also the text doesn't sharp! If you just surfing the web, video editing & correction, go for Dell For photo retouching, go for Apple with no concern! stangn99
I think i understand what you mean. I dont really mind the looks of t he DELL. I know the apple looks sexier, but im not going to fork out an extra 300-400$ just because it looks nicer. Apples bezel is apparently really weak also!...i haven't noticed anythign wrong wit it..but i guess some people found the bezel to be really flimsy. As for color this is my main thing. I need the colors to be pretty accurate. I will be doing design for print...so i need good color. Can't the dell monitor be calibrated? I mean...the cinema display doesn't even have a hue/saturation etc. etc. features...everything is software controlled. Wouldn't the dell be able to get a better color since you can actually control all that on the monitor AND software calibrate?? thanks!
boo50
LCD panel in Apple Cinema Display and Dell monitor is the same... you wrong. Apple have 23" LG-Philips S-IPS, Dell have 24" Samsung PVA. only 20" and 30" models have the same panels. here is my thread with the same question http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=29424 if you choose Dell - you need to buy a Calibrator to accurate calibrate colors for work with photo editing. Which one did you get? if you got the Dell, are you happy with it? Did you calibrate it? I read the whole thread. I will be using this for graphic, movies, and general stuff. the colour MUST be clear, vibrant aand not washed out. I really like all the options apple offers, and i would be getting A.03 revision which i believe is the latest.
boo50
i still didn't get new monitor. and still didn't decide what to get =)) but i mosly for DELL. finally all will dependent on my budget... but one my friend have Spyder 2 Pro (so i can calibrate Dell if i get it) and i don't work with photo edidting.. so Dell for me can be better choice in price for result competition ... (as you can see on than thread, it's big difference in price here in Russia - average market price for Dell is $1000, for Apple $1500 so i again for Dell) and sure if i live in Usa, i'll get Dell for less than $700 unhesitatingly. don't know how for you.... maybe if you havn't calibrator and work with photos, maybe better to go with Apple, they are factory calibrated very good. don't need additional adjustment. they are as all Apple "ready for work out of a box"

Thanks for your feedback. I still think I will get the dell because of the price also. Even if I get a "Spyder2Express", it will still cost A LOT less than the apple. Thanks again. sack
I have both of them. The CD23'' is slightly better with color transitions. If you look at this image http://img134.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bild6vf7.png you'd see steps with the 2407FPW where you won't see any on the CD23''. However, the Apple looks way better, but I'd go with the Dell, moreover since you want to connect multiple sources at once, which is simply impossible with the CD23''. 39thRonin
Thanks for the great thread. I've been looking at panels for a while - just lookiing for something bigger than the 19" noname LCD I'm using now. I guess the color is OK - but then I'm not doing photo work... I'm leaning towards the Dell monitors as well - flexible connections & costs are the deciding factor here...
boo50
yeah, Dell looks great too... one my friend buy 2007 model and it's cool.... if you are not pro with photo editing so you may don't worry and go with dell. i'm not working with graphics, i'm just like apple, and that is why i buy apple...
