Thunderbolt 3 - GA-Z170X-UD5 TH + Audio Interface

I just bought the Focusrite RED 8pre audio interface, which uses thunderbolt 2 to connect to the computer. I've gone through the full process of using windows to activate Thunderbolt on my GA-Z170X-UD5 TH, and i can confirm that the interface is recognised by the drivers when i boot into macOS. The problem is, it doesn't actually work properly. The drivers start up and see the device, It plays sound for a few minutes, and then it dies.

I'm using the apple thunderbolt 3 - 2 adapter, because it is far cheaper in the UK than the startech one. I can confirm it works perfectly in windows with this interface. Do you think it could be because i'm using the apple one instead of the startech one?

I'm running 10.12.3.

It's an extremely expensive interface, so i'll need to return it really soon if i cannot get it working. For that reason i would be SO VERY THANKFUL if someone could guide me through sorting this problem. It seems to me like it must be solvable, since it works perfect for the first minute or two.

I have also tried connecting a firewire hard drive, using the thunderbolt adapter and then a firewire adapter - very similar thing happens, it sees it, mounts it, and works for a bit, but if i try to copy something to it, it gets 100mb in and then freezes. If someone can help me with this before i gotta return this audio interface i will LOVE them forever.
