hello all my first post here!!!!!! :D

my friend just received a powermac G3 from school ( they were gonna thro it out :dev: ) so me and him are trying to revive it in sorts..... it works but we want to upgrade it to be a daily driver. FIrst and probobly most important question...... what video cards can we install? we are assuming it is either AGP or PCI (i haven't actually seen it yet, but I will hopefully soon.....) so either way what cards does os x support? i am looking for specifically at maybe a radeon series..... can u take any radeon and plug it in and make it work? or do i need a mac edition card to do so? what cards would work is the question..... maybe a 9550/9600/9700/9800 series card? anything nvidia that we know to work right off the bat?

ok next issue..... we are considering trying to find a faster proc. it has a 300mhz G3, is it plausible to maybe upgrade to a faster G3? is it hard to socket or even possible to replace the procs on these like pc's (i have had a lot of experience with them unfortunately) or even possible to find a good used one in a store? anyways just asking....

lastly wut operating system will the G3 support? they installed 10.2 and have 10.4..... does 10.4 work on G3? he might also want to run OS 9 would 10.4 support dual booting it? if not how about 10.3.... i would purchase it if i had to.

thanks for all your help! hope to hear from you soon!

ok update quickly here i took a look at it (i gave him an old 20gb harddrive to use) the video card is a rage 128 pci card so we unfortunately are looking at a pci board..... any suggestions?

is it possible to go from G3 to G4? that would be really neat....

anyways thatnks for any help!

The PM G3's used a ZIF socket, and you can find processor upgrades at macsales.com. This will include a G4 upgrade.

They also use PCI cards (no AGP) and you can get a Radeon 9200 from the same place.

Lastly, the version of Mac OS will depend on the model, as some were phased out. If it's blue and white, it will run 10.4. If it's beige, it will run 10.2.8 (and 10.3 with XPostFacto if I remember right)
