Hardware :

  • i7 6700K
  • Watercooled Corsair H75
  • Asus Maximus VIII Impact
[Mini-ITX format, Z170 chipset, LAN is an Intel I219-V]
  • 32Gb CRUCIAL Ballistix Sport LT (16GBx2)
  • EVGA GTX 970 SSC
  • Samsung 850PRO 512Go SSD
  • Bitfenix Prodigy Case

The hardware assembly was a though because of a PSU problem. I bought a CS650M Corsair PSU but it would start the system unless the GPU was of the PCI slot. Tried another GPU : same thing. So I changed the PSU for an Corsair TX750W I had in a old PC build, it started and worked fine. I'm wondering if the system is asking for more power than the CS650M can provided (but I doubt it) or if it is just a failure in the product - will have it tested and return it if so.

After that rocky start, the install went great !
I followed the instruction in the Installation Guide, BIOS Settings for the ROG UEFI BIOS was really simple.

For the drivers I selected :

Audio : ALC1150
Disk : as my SSD seems to work fine I didn't select anything
Misc : FakeSMC + FakeSMC plugins
Network : Since my motherboard is Intel based I went with the latest AppleIntelE1000e v3.3.3 drivers but... it a bit of a wild guess...
Bootloader : Clover v2.3k r3320 UEFI
Graphics : Inject NVIDIA
System definition : MacPro 3,1

After the restart I noticed that the graphics drivers for my GPU seems inefficient. I installed the alternate NVIDIA drivers separately. After a few tries I finally nailed it, had to go into a specific sequence (if not, got a kernel panic on boot)

  1. Went into Clover EFI config.plist > in "Boot" checked in boot nv_disable=1 > restarted.
  2. Installed the alternate drivers > restarted.
  3. Went back on Clover EFI config.plist > unchecked nv_disable=1 > restarted : DONE.

System runs good, but I still have a few problems :

  1. Biggest one : no network !! clear.png
My motherboard has Wifi & Bluetooth as well as a Intel i219-V network controller but when I go into System pref. > network I seen none.
Everything is enable in the BIOS but I'm guessing I installed the wrong drivers.

  2. Second problem : no Audio
My guess would be that it is the same problem as the network : wrong drivers.

  3. 3rd but not as problematic for the moment : RAM
My 32Gb set (2x16Gb Crucial Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 2400MT/s) is only recognized as 2x8Go at 3200 MT/s.

Thanks a lot Gengik84 for the fast answer !!  :)

I already have the boot option nvda_drv=1 checked in my EFI config.plist
What do you mean to add it AFTER installing the web driver ? should I uncheck it before I apply the ethernet patch ?

I will try all these install on monday morning. :')

It's going in the right direction... I guess :|

I decided to restart fresh, formatted my SSD and went through the full install using the  El Capitan Skylake USB-V7.zip  from chris1111

  • 1st : Network is back !!! --> applied the IntelMausiEthernet and the magic happened.
  • 2nd : Audio is OK --> tried a few technics but it worked when I used the AppleHDA Patcher, everything went great.

But now another problem started : computer reboots by itself randomly.

Sometime it will reboot after 10sec. once the session starts, sometime it needs a "push" (open safari, or try to save something in clover...etc)
I do not think it is only performance related, I used cinebench to test load the cpu : it hold's up nicely, then the GPU : same thing (tough I wonder if the openGL test would not use only the CPU as the fans of my GTX970 didn't ever start to turn during the test).

So I'm feeling a bit like 1 step forward, two steps back....
