How to keep HDMI Audio on Laptop Lid close (Clamshell mode)?

After doing some googling this seems to be a fairly common issues for users with real Macbooks as well.

I have Dell XPS 14Z laptop working well now on 10.11.6 with HDMI video & audio output to my TV.   I also have native sleep working without issue on the laptop, and normally when I close the lid, after the 25 secs or so, the laptop goes to sleep as it should.  I also appear to have "clamshell mode" working fine.  If the HDMI external display is connected to the laptop and I close the lid, instead of going to sleep the laptop stays awake and keeps working on the external display with my USB keyboard and mouse as it should.  However, when I close the lid to enter clamshell mode, the HDMI audio output switches back to the laptop internal speakers, which is not desirable.

My temporary workaround is to just turn the brightness down completely on the laptop internal display and  leave the lid open.

I have also tried closing the laptop lid and then going into the audio settings  in System Prefs and changing the output device to "internal speakers" and then back to the HDMI audio device. However, the audio never returns to the HDMI output with the laptop lid closed.

Does anybody know of a way to correct this to allow audio to continue to play through HDMI audio output with the laptop lid closed?  Thanks for any tips!
