nv_disable documentation

I want to understand what exactly this command is doing.  My understanding is that nvda_drv=1 tells the OS to use Nvidia web driver, which does the same thing as switching it in Nvidia pref pane. Right?

But what does nv_disable=1 do?  I don't think it's the exact opposite.  When I first installed OS X, before I installed Nvidia web driver, this argument had some effect.  If it disables OS X built-in GPU driver, then what driver is being used instead?  Must be something, because I'm still able to boot to a GUI, albeit slow, in this case.

With the option "nv_disable=1" the gpu is only used with standard framebuffer functions (no QE/CI oder 3D-Stuff).

This is one of the options do get a not supported Nvidia GPU running while installing OSX...
