Gone a bit off this OS X thing (overclocking the 5960x) borked computer

I don't mean to put people off, but I finally got my hackintosh working quite well only for it to bork my computer.

EVGA Micro 2 (X99), i7 5960x, R9 390x and so on.

Had it on El Capitan.

So, it was going ok, but on windows this chip hums along at 4.7ghz and my CAD software is great. In the hack it was a little slow by comparison with no overclock.

I decided to overclock the hackintosh.

Plenty of time playing - Mac os doesn't like multipliers really, anyway, long story short, I went back to windows to find my overclock wrecked there.

Then the computer just refused to overclock any more. Lights on the motherboard flashing prettily and scarily at the same time and no boots to anything.

After MANY resets and even resorting to reflashing bios, more than once, it's back, but running a little hot - cooling down as the day wears on.

What is happening?

Does OS X write stuff to bios?

How can I disconnect the physical mac drives and for it still to bork my computer.

I realize this system is a little bleeding edge for mac, even though it's pretty old for windows.

So I've put my R9 NANO back in the box and running windows, even if it doesn't look so nice at least it doesn't f***k with my hardware...

I guess the challenge was fun while it lasted.

I have a 5960x running at 4.7GHz first under El Capitan, now under Sierra.

And two 6700K one at 4.6 and one at 4.9 Ghz under El Capitan.

No problems with OC

So I doubt that OS X is at fault.

What version of OS X are you running ?

Excellent news!

I'm running El Cap with clover.

Mac 6.1 if that makes a difference.

So in your OC are you using multiplier? If I use the BLCK it stops my M.2

I have to say that over the last weeks of getting this thing together you're about the only one I've found with good overclock on a 5960x

Of course it'll be something in Clover that's doing it,

I'll have to wait now because I've gor the R9 390 in running OS X on a xeon 2690

And yes I change the voodoo sync from 15 to 23

don't mean to upset you but are you sure that you had it working correctly , i can easily OC my 5820k to 4.5 and i don't have a single problem on OS , i do have a water cooler on my pc , i think there was a problem with that cpu you have at some point in the past , i'm not really sure and i don't remember exactly right now. but i saw something about that CPU about having some problems in OS , but maybe that is something old and it has already been fixed , anyway are you using the right version of VoodooTSCSync.kext for your CPU , the 8 core version , also sometimes you need to use NullCPUPowerManagement because we don't have support for Power Management for our CPUS in OS just yet , when i installed NullCPUPowerManagement.kext my CPU works faster , i get better , faster and higher results in benchmark apps , i hope you understand my english. the fact that you mentioned that you still have the problems after you log in to windows , well that means that is not OS , check your CPU temperature and your OC settings. reset your bios and start all over again , save your changes. i think you are OC ing too much or some settings are wrong . i'm not saying that you don't how to OC. but i assure you that i can run my pc 24/7 OC to 4.5 at 40 degrees and i also OC my ram to 2.4 and i don't have problems. Disable CPU EIST and Disable Turbo Boost. don't use OS until you are certain that you system is stable then you can try OS to see if you still have problems. but sometimes if you are not using the right SMBIOS for your system configuration or you have a bad configuration in the boot loader that can also cause problems and it doesn't it have anything to do with OC ing. don't get mad at me i'm just trying to help. good luck.

the symptoms that you are describing maybe you are either using too much current setting it too high or you are pushing your CPU too much , are you using a cpu fan or do you have a water cooler , don't try to OC too high on air. i think is better to restore defaults and run at stock speed for a few days then you can try again later. when i see that kind of indications is better to just leave it alone for a few days. to avoid damage to the components. i know i can go to 4.6 or 4.7 but i don't want to damage my CPU just for another 100 MHZ. is better to run it a little lower but stable than trying to push it all the way and burn the CPU. so i'm happy with 4.5 even knowing that i can still go higher.

Thanks for your input :)

The OC is great. It's been 4.7 with 1.3V and temps 25 to 70 deg (it's under water) for months. I run it 4.5 and 1.2V in summer.

It's fine now in windows too.

I suspect the EVGA mobo is a bit quirky. If I overclock with BCLK on any platform it breaks the M.2 and is way hotter, so I stick to multiplier. volts and xmp on the memory (the xmp is still 100 bclk). But 38 is the max on os x and even then, hw monitor shows it's only getting to 3.6.

Do I need to set clock speed in Clover?

The other thing is that I've put the R9 390 back in the xeon rig and that's my osx machine now. It just feels like not enough challenge haha.

So I have to try to get Sierra going because of it's support for the R9 nano which is now back with the 5960.

I need the legendary brumbaer to do a guide for overclocking x99 chips on osx. Collect his snippets from around the internet and put them together :)
