GTX 970 fans not scaling back

Hi All,

Any one in El Cap with a GTX 970 with fans once spun up not spinning back down ? It seems my hack is working perfect with the exception of when i run something that uses the GPU in a mean way, like game or GL bench then the fans ramp up but never slow down when the app is closed.  I have been looking into this AGPM stuff and made some changes to AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext/info.plist with some of the info out there in the wild. With no change.

Just wondering if anyone else with a gtx 970 or other maxwell card see's this problem.  Incidentally, the fans spin down when i sleep the system.  Until i run gpu intensive stuff again when it wakes up.

Cheers

Cass

Found the problem, looks like it was related to hw sensors..

On boot the fans spun up to max, the hw monitor app showed gpu pwm at 100%, after sleep / wake it was at 30% hence no real fan noise.

Cleaned out the /S/L/E/fakesmc it installed and some other files left around from the other hwsensors3 package i must have installed at some point trying to fix this then reinstalled the latest version hwsensors 6.20.1410 and now all seems well..

At idle gpu pwm is 1%, stressing the gpu using furmark and haven simultaneously makes temps go up to 75deg C and gpu pwm 50 ish woth some fan noise.  Scales right back down to 1% and silence after killing the apps.  joy!!

EDIT :- Joy lasted about 20 mins with hwmonitor.  Seemed to hang up and gpu pwm went up to 64% with fans spinning, at this time logs showed

03/07/2016 21:55:42.475 HWMonitor[580]: CoreAnimation: warning, deleted thread with uncommitted CATransaction; set CA_DEBUG_TRANSACTIONS=1 in environment to log backtraces.

So for the time being ill run without it to see how it goes.

EDIT2 :-  nope, running without it is max fans until sleep again ... weird.. worked for a while with hwmonitor and now i re-installed it im back to square one.  running with or without is same...

And after all this i suspect hardware problem..  Fan issue shows itself up in windows now too.  Opened case to find one fan not spinning and the other going 100%.  flicked non working fan and it kicked into life..

  • 2 weeks later...

Received rma card back today and its great .. not even heard the fans spin up even during benches ... seems to be a significant bit quieter all while keeping the temps in check.

Funnily enough on the dust point on the previous post, the one working fan had dust on the fins as picked up when spinning, the other fan must have been bust for a while as it was dustless, and i mean shiny, like its never spun ..
