Unable to get to the OS X Installer on my new Skylake build

Hey guys,

So I knew getting OS X on Skylake was going to be tough. Just had no idea it was going to be this tough. Anyways, let me cut down to the chase.

My Config:

Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 5

Intel i5 6500

8GB Corsair DDR4 2400Mhz RAM

Samsung 250GB EVO SSD

AMD R9 270X

Problem:

I followed this thread and tried the CLOVER posted here (1) and here (2). Both times my PC throws up an error before it even reaches the installer. I tried changing a bunch of settings in Clover Configurator to no avail.

My EFI folder can be downloaded from here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xx5aqqmusjrl4n3/EFI.zip?dl=0

At this point, I am absolutely clueless on what I should do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

As carbo178 is pointed out you need the patch for running El Capitan on Skylake processors.

The problem you are experiencing is due to a problem in Gigabyte mainboards bios which lacks a setting to disable IOAPIC settings..

If you are using the EFI folder I posted on my page you should be able to boot into the installer, if so make sure that you are using the USB ports on the back panel on the mainboard and plug it to USB 2.0 ports not the USB 3.0 ports. trying different port might help.

I checked your config.plist it needs Piker Alpha's patch for Skylake CPUs or you need to patch the bios manually which is not really necessary.

add the following in your config.plist under "Kexts to Patch" section: or replace the config.plist in your EFI folder with the one I uploaded to my forum.

<dict>

<key>Comment</key>
<string>Skylake APIC Patch by Piker's Alpha</string>
<key>Find</key>
<data>
wegQD7bw
</data>
<key>Name</key>
<string>AppleAPIC</string>
<key>Replace</key>
<data>
vhcAAACQ
</data>
</dict>

or in clover configurator under Kernel and Kext Patches---->Kext to Patch add the followings:

Hi guys,

Big thanks for your help. With your help and some more tweaking, I managed to install OS X on my Skylake config.

I still am facing 2 issues that I would appreciate your help with:

1) My Hackintosh has 8GB DDR4 RAM, but OS X is only displaying 4GB RAM.

2) I have a Sapphire R9 270X GPU with 2GB RAM, but OS X is showing an AMD 7xxx series GPU with 2GB RAM. It is also detecting my 22" monitor as a 23" one, though there are no issues with the resolution.

@cyberdevs: Did the audio work OOB for you? Don't have speakers connected to the PC right now, so don't know if its working or not.

Regarding the first issue you need to configure you're memory specs in clover under SMBIOS just add the correct info of the memory modules under memory and it'll fix the mismatched memory info.

I'm assuming you have 2x4GB memory modules. Add two values 0 and 1 set the Channels to Dual Channel and SlotCount to 2. Fill all the fields with the correct info.

Regarding the second problem you need to add framebuffer info of you're VGA adapter under "Graphics" set "Dual Link" value to 1, check the "Load VBios" input the compatible framebuffer under "FB Name" I have an AMD Radeon 7790 so I used "Baladi" farembuffer, set the VRAM to "2048" and Video Ports to 4 and do not forget to check "Inject ATI"

Under Kernel and Kext Patches add the following to "ATI Connectors Data":

000400000403000000010300120403030004000004030000000101001102010100040000040300000001020021030202000400000403000000010400220504040004000004030000000105001000050500040000040300000001060020010606

and set the following to "ATI Connectors Patch"

000800000400000000010300220503030004000004000000000101002103010200040000040000000001020012040201040000000400000000010400010204040400000004000000000105000000050600040000040000000001060020010605

and set the "ATI connectors Controller to "8000"

these settings worked out for me but might not work on your VGA but it's worth to try.

Remember to backup your config plist first and make the adjustments.

Thanks Cyberdevs for your helpful reply. I will try the Graphics thing tomorrow morning. I did end up editing the SMBIOS to add information about my 8GB RAM module. I hope it will be enough.

How did you get audio to work? OS X shows no output device for me.

Lastly, I have made a backup of my working config.plist. Suppose I screw something up, how do I restore back to the working config.plist? I know I can edit the config file from the Clover bootloader, but if I make a lot of changes, manually changing each entry in Clover will be a bit too tedious. Is there anyway I can just overwrite the config.plist if my Hackintosh stops booting to OS X?

You're most welcome,

all you have to do is to put your last working config.plist and EFI folder contents on your bootable USB disk's EFI partition which you used to install mac os x with and every time you mess something up use the USB disk to boot the system with but instead of using Mac OS X installer simply choose you're El Capitan HDD to boot from. It will load the config and the contents of the working EFI too boot Mac OS X.

In order to make the sound card work I installed voodooHDA 2.8.8 and set the audio layout to 1 in config.plist under "Devices" and set the "kext-dev-mode=1" and "rootless=0" flags.

You can see the rest here in my other post:

Installed Voodoo HDA. Other settings were already what you recommended. Still no sound. OS X does detect m,y spekaer now. There is a hissing sound coming from the speaker sometimes. Its like there is some issues with the playback or something.

Update: The front audio port is working just fine.

@cyberdevs: I have plugged the 3.5mm audio jack into the yellow 3.5mm jack at the rear of the mobo. Tried others as well, but to no avail.

Update 2: I think VoodooHDA is detecting the front 3.5mm audio jack as the rear audio jack. Changing the rear 3.5mm audio jack setting in VoodooHDA leads to changes in playback of music from speaker connected to the front audio jack.

You are welcome,

Did you read the link I sent you about GFX?

Yes, I did. I even installed the R9 270 Driver Pack DMG linked there, but that did not do anything. I have no idea how to install kexts so clueless with how to proceed further.

Q) Is the Intel Power Gadget app working for you? Says incompatible CPU for me. Just need to make sure my CPU is not running at its full speed all the time.

I don't use intel power gadget. I used MacCPUID and it shows all the correct info.

About the kexts you can either use KextHelper, KextWizard or KextUtility or simply put them in your clover's folder under "Kext" folder, Using Kext installers have a benefit of built-in permission repair tools which is necessary for mac os x to load kexts properly

I will try that later today.

Another question: You updated to OS X 10.11.2 from the App Store or are still running 10.11.1? My Hackintosh is running 10.11.1. Not sure if I can update to 10.11.2 directly without any issues or not.

I downloaded the 10.11.2 combo update from apple's web site and then installed it but before you do the update make sure you have a backup of your important data just in case. My update went smoothly and everything worked just fine.

Hey,

Sorry for troubling you.

So I noticed that randomly and for a few seconds, the audio stops working. If I am playing music, the audio will stop coming from the speaker for 5-10 secs. Changing songs, skipping to the next track usually fixes the issue.

Also, still cannot get the GPU to be recognised as R9 270X. Installed the kext but that did nothing. :(

Installed the R9 270 Driver pack DMG linked in this thread. Then installed the DSDT file using one of the KEXT installers you recommended. I tried setting the Fake ID to 6801 and framebuffer to "futomaki", but that did absolutely nothing. Enabling +Inject ATI leads to my Hackintosh booting up but then I don't get any display.

I followed exactly your steps to get audio up and working. I think the only think that I changed was to un-tick 'Reset HDA.'

Have you tried booting your computer with my EFI folder? I suggest you make another USB with clover installed on it and replace the whole EFI folder with the one I uploaded to my forum and boot from the USB then select your Mac OS X partition and see what happens.

here is my EFI folder link

https://www.dropbox.com/s/win6k4lvfndnz8p/EFI.zip?dl=0

One more thing, as I was testing my AMD Radeon setting I was able to make the dual monitor work by connecting one display to the HDMI port and the other one to the DVI port, when I used two DVI ports I had no display at all.

I think I will leave the GPU thing as it is, since my Cinebench R15 scores are on par with that a R9 270X scores.

I noticed that my Samsung EVO 250GB SSD benches around 250-270MB/sec in Bluemagic Disk Test and read speeds are around 500MB/s. I think the Write speeds are a bit on the lower side. What kind of write speeds do you get?

I will try your EFI folder later today.

Once again, thanks for all your help. Really appreciate it.

So I noticed that the audio stops playing intermittently only when I use Final Cut Pro X. I can solve the issue by playing/skipping some songs in iTunes. Weird. Anyway I can diagnose what the problem is?

Spotlight also takes its own sweet time to close after I use it to preview videos. Its like there is some kind of bottleneck going on.

Lastly, I got OS X to recognise my R9 270X as a R9 270X, but ended up losing H/W acceleration so rolled back to previous setting. The GPU performs just as it should in benchmarks, which is more than enough for me.
