I wanted to post this since so many others with this motherboard are having trouble.

Disclaimer: these methods worked for me on my board. I hope they help you, but you may have different hardware and I can’t guarantee anything. Thanks.

My Specifications:

GA-X79-UP4

16Gb ram

GeForce GTX 950 (SC)

Bios version F7

If you are running Earlier versions of OS X you probable have many of these set. Here it is anyway.

(I) My Bios settings:

                           Under MIT

I left this stock— CPUClock Ratio 34, all turbo cores on “auto”

      Bios Features

1. Disabled full screen logo (because it bothers me)

2. Fast boot “disabled”

3. Limit CPUID Maximum “disabled”

4. VT-d “disabled” (this was important)

5. Boot Mode Selection “UEFI and Legacy”

6. Lan PXE Boot Option “disabled”

7. Storage Boot Option Control “UEFI First”

8. Other PCI Device Rom Priority “UEFI OpRom”

9. After you have created an install UEFI USB (in Part (II) B) make sure it is set as the first boot priority)

                            Peripherals

1. USB 3.0 Support “disabled”  (I could not get El Capitan to install without this and the other USB 3.0s being disabled)

2. There are two Onboard USB3.0 Controllers, I “disabled” both.

3. SATA Configuration— set to AHCI

4. Ports 0-5 Hot Ports “disabled”

5. External SATA 0-5 “disabled”

6. Marvell SATA “AHCI”

                            Power Management

Everything is disabled except “Wake on Lan”

Save and Exit.

(II) B) Create USB installer / download and gather needed files

1. Download a copy of the El Capitan installer to Applications

2. Download and use this method to create an installer USB Drive:http://www.insanelym...l-capitan-usb/

3. After the USB installer has been created go down to the “mediafire” link posted by stinga11 found here: http://www.insanelym.../#commentsStart , then download the X79 file.

There are two .aml files in the folder, but only the DSDT.aml will be needed later

4. Go here: http://www.rampagedev.com/?page_id=48 and download the X79.dmg

5. In X79.dmg under Files/Step 2/ Kexts/ Gigabyte Kexts are four kexts for the GA-X79-UP4 board

6. In  X79.dmg Step 3/Gigabyte/GA-79-UP4 V2.2/SSDT/Nvidia (I have an Nvidia video card) is the SSDT.aml file for this board

7. In X79.dmg Step 4/SSDT-1 there are several SSDT-1.amls. Pick the one that matches your processor. I used the stock 4930K for now

(III) Prepare for Install

1. Mount the USB installer drive and the EFI drive will appear on the Desktop (I downloaded the “Classic Clover Configurator”, clicked on “mount EFI”, then “check partition”, and mounted the EFI:EFI of the USB installer drive—- don’t mess with the config.plist)

2. Copy the DSDT.aml from stinga11 in II(3) above to the EFI of the USB installer and put it in EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/patched

3. Copy the SSDT.aml from RampageDev’s X79.dmg in II(6) above, and the SSDT-1.aml for your processor from II(7) above to the EFI of the USB installer and put them in EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/patched

4. Copy the four Gigabyte kexts from RampageDev’s X79.dmg in II(5) above to the EFI of the USB installer and put them in EFI/CLOVER/kexts/10.11.

If there is already a FakeSMC. kext in the folder—- when asked “replace it or keep both”, replace it with with the Gigabyte kext from RampageDev’s X79.dmg

(IV) Installation

1. Restart the computer.

2. At the Clover boot screen use the boot arguments for the USB:

                                           nv_disable=1 npci=0x3000 kext-dev-mode=1 rootless=0

After this I was able to install El Capitan. I had to use the nv_disable=1 argument since I have a 900GTX video card. You may not have to. I used the new disk utility to prep my drive as usual. When the system rebooted I had to boot from the USB drive again with the same arguments as above. Then I post installed using Chris1111’s Clover post installer.

I could not boot from the hard drive until I installed the Clover boot loader to the hard drive, and repeated the steps above, i.e. mounted the hard drive like I did the USB and copied the DSDT, SSDT, SSDT-1, and the four Gigabyte kexts to the same CLOVER folders discussed above now installed on the hard drive by Clover’s post installer.

I wanted El Capitan because Nvidia has a  package along with CUDA drivers that provide acceleration for my card, and I can play my Blue-rays if I wish. The specific package for 10.11.1 is “WebDriver-346.03.03fo2.pkg” found here:

http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/93555/en-us

The CUDA Link is on the same page.

Finally, I edited (with text edit) the hard drive’s EFI/CLOVER/Config.plist so that the boot arguments read:

npci=0x3000 kext-dev-mode=1 rootless=0 nvda_drv=1

nv_disable=1 is no longer needed and if used will continue to disable the card. The last new argument “nvda_drv=1” will enable the card.

I still have problems with sound coming and going, and no USB 3.0.

Thanks Chris1111, stinga11 and Rampage Dev.

Great post!!!!

I used the following boot arguments in the hard drive's EFI/CLOVER/Config.plist

npci=0x2000 kext-dev-mode=1

I do have a different video card GEFORCE GTX 760, I got audio working, please see post on the other board.

Also, I used the USB2 port above the PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse Port.

Thank you for the great guide! I decided to really learn what i was doing instead of just using the tonymac installers. I've learned a lot by just by your guide and the others i've read here. The only thing not working is USB 3 and audio.

Mac2Ci which post are you refering too to get your audio working?

moonbasealpha,

I installed this way (modifying clover after USB creation) on two separate drives. The first one I used the other forum's method and had trouble with sound after using their post installer. However, when I installed using the above, and Chris1111's post clover installer for the sound I had no problems.

Weird about this motherboard.
