Upgrading El Capitan VM from Workstation 10 to Workstation 12

Hi,

Is this possible ?

I do know that a simple upgrade using the 'update this guest VM' or whatever it is seems to break it ...

I have been running Workstation 10 for a while and just purchased an upgrade.  I believe it will upgrade my other guest VMs (Win7 varieties and Ubuntu varieties) but the Mac VM doesn't start.

Ahhh I'm so ignorant of the process aren't I ?

:-)

To be a little clearer,

I upgraded to Workstation 12 on a Linux Mint box.  I tried to upgrade the guest VM using the simple reminder that pops up from the VMWare software.  It didn't work.  So I then uninstalled the Workstation 12 back to Workstation 10.  Trying to run the guest now results in a message saying that the vmx file was created by a version of Workstation that is unknown ...

Now I'm trying to run a copy of the guest on Workstation 10 but even it won't start !

What is not starting ?

Everything starts normally with the light grey screen etc. and proceeds at a fair pace.  When the progress bar gets to about half way things start to slow down exponentially.  It goes to a black screen with a white apple and a white progress bar.  This image gets sort of interleaved and the apple is spread across the screen in a series of cut apples ... It never arrives at the intended destination.

I can start other guests from this installation of Workstation 10 it is just the Mac guests having problems.

If I were to re-install Word or Office for some reason I would expect to be able to open and edit my old documents !!

I do apologise for my naivety.

For some reason (experience?!) I assumed / thought that an 'upgrade' to Workstation 12 from 10 would leave many things in place and just update a few files.  I think I am almost assuming that no software actually ever purges itself from the disks given that in times past I've had to go to extreme measures to get rid of software on both Linux and Windows.

So I completely went about things in a very simple (naive) way.

When I went from Workstation 10 to 12 I needed to run the unlocker for 12 even though I'd run an unlocker on Workstation 10.  When I went back to 10 from 12 I needed to run its unlocker again also ... !!

SO.

I have re-installed 12, run the unlocker (2.07), and, 'Hey, Presto!'.

My Mac OSX ElCapitan is working enough for me to complete my learning tasks (I'm not fiddling around with it to check for things I don't need at this stage - like sound ...)

So I think I can confirm that if you upgrade to Workstation 12 from 10 you can upgrade a guest OSX VM the simple way but do it after you unlock the Workstation program ...

Thanks all ...

:-)
