El Capitan 10.11.1 versus the 5960X - A Collaborative Work-Thru

Over the past month I've come across multiple postings about this, but really wanted to begin to dig deep to try and understand what the next steps, if any, could be in solving this scenario:

Getting El Capitan running semi-stable on X99 with a 5960X 8-core Processor.

I think that there are plenty of us out there based on passed posts/responses by Stinga11 (respect), Rampage Dev (respect), and even heavy hitters getting involved such as Pike R. Alpha, Toleda (respect respect) etc...

So I myself am NOT a coder, programmer or UNIX guru BY ANY MEANS, but can follow directions well and am open to helping in any way I can.  I'm hoping this thread will attract those than can actually do some good for 5960X users.  From what I understand it's the fact that the rollback AppleACPIPlatform.kext from 10.9.5 is causing the issue and cannot be prelinked with the current El Capitan kernel.  Does this mean we have to wait for Apple to add support for X99/C612 chipsets?

Anyone with insight on this issue from a technical perspective would be greatly appreciated by any/all 5960X owners.

Great, great Initiative!!

I've got a Yosemite installation running pretty great, but the main aim is El Capitan.

Even searched on other forums (TonyMac) but no one has succeeded yet.

Don't know if Apple's latest support for Skylake could help ?

Or even more, if Apple releases more XNU source code ?

I'm 110% in front to start testing any potential solution, idea, crazy tough even!!  :hyper:

Lets get more 5960X users out there to help!!

Boa sorte,

Paulo

I know there are a lot of us out there... Now we just need to convince Stinga11 / RampageDev / Pike R. Alpha to help (yes, this is a call-out)! ;) I know it's on Andrew's (RampageDev) radar, but as he considers X99 a "beta" platform -- he's told me that it's not at the top of his list until some of his other projects are completed.  I understand the faults with the X99, more specifically X99/5960X, but for a system with this performance I think the downsides (lack of PM etc) are worth it in the long run, especially for power users.  One thing that should be noted is that 5820K & 5930K users that have El Capitan running have documented a somewhat substantial decline in CPU performance once they've upgraded, at least during benchmarking.  I'm happy to donate to any dev's that help get this running.  During the Yosemite release I think there were more than 5 of us that put up cash "reward" donations and of course Stinga11 got em...  I'm glad to see interest beginning to spark!  I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been a harder push/initiative to get it running, but I suppose we're the minority...

Is it the kernel that's the issue or the USB kexts? There's a few possible solutions I can think of... Hopefully I can test done of them this weekend.

-roll back the USB kexts to the Yosemite or mavs versions. Not ideal at all. But it could be a temporary fix.

-if the kernel is the issue, diff it with the yos kernel once the source of released. See what's changed related to USB or acpiplatform.

-diff the current acpiplatform with the Yosemite version. Apply any relevant changes to the mavs acpiplatform.

Obviously the latter 2 are not possible until the source is released. I've tried disassembling the ep and yos kexts as well as doing a hex diff, but there are too many changes to see what's relevant without the source code.

Good to see you again Jamiethemorris! I think it was working thru the Yos release we last talked... Did you get a chance to test anything this weekend?  I know I didn't, house hunting and raising twin toddlers had me strapped for time and energy.  Where are people getting stuck exactly?  Has anyone tried Stinga11's USB fix on X99?  Seems like things are a mess for now...

What I tried this weekend was installing the mavs kexts as legacy kexts... Instead of trying to boot out on my hack I tried to boot it on my macbook. It defaulted to the old kexts. For iopcifamily, it gave an error in the console about some function being outdated so it refused to prelink it. I'll have to check what the message was later. Luckily that is the one that is open source, so we'll see what I can find when the el Capitan source is released. Acpiplatform wouldn't load either but gave no error message - I'm assuming it's just because iopcifamily was a dependency.

BTW - if you want to try using legacy kexts to override the original ones like this use the make me legacy app.

All that being said... I really, really hope the new Mac pro's release will solve this issue for us. But I'm certainly not getting my hopes up about it.

This is really funny because in preparations I have legacy issues of the 10.9.5 kexts on my desktop folder as we speak (made with Make Me Legacy).  Did it boot on your 5960X hack? Or did you only try on your Macbook?  I thought that IOPCIFam gave that error in Yosemite too?  I could be wrong, but it sounds familiar.  Anyway it sounds like a start...

It is about time that we get a new NEW Mac Pro.  It's been two years now, however after the last Keynote I was deeply saddened that nothing was mentioned.  I hope they update with Skylake-E (or whatever it ends up being early 2016) but I'm not holding my breath.  In WWDC 2013 Phill Schiller said it hadn't forgotten about it's pros and "can't innovate anymore my ass" but it seems like they've once again forgotten... On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if they updated it without having a keynote in place and sent out a press release.  Hopefully the update won't surpass our current platform of choice but Apple has never been on the forefront of the market considering silicon with its Pro machines like their consumer grade notebooks.  I suppose only time will tell.  I remember during the Yosemite release that I had very low hopes of getting 10.10 to run then outta the blue comes Stinga11 to save the day... I can only hope that someone does the same again this time.  There are some features that as a designer I would surely use (like drawing in notes etc).  Wow I started rambling.

So Jamie, did you leave off with only testing on your MacBook and never moved the disk to X99?

All dressed up and no where to go...  I bought all this stuff hoping to make a Hackintosh.  Any help provided would be appreciated.  I hope to get El Capitan working on it at some point.  I believe most, if not all of my components should work in a Hackintosh, just have not found it working w/ El Capitan.  I downloaded Chrs1111's installer, but cannot get past the apple on the black screen before the machine reboots.  I have been doing a lot of reading on this site.  It is a great site.  I am totally new to this and am sure to have questions.  I have the i7 5920K in a mini itx case.  I also have not found anyone anywhere yet that has made a similar build work w/ El Capitan.  Looking forward to following this thread!!

El Capitan works with the 5820K.  There are plenty of posts out there on how to do it.  This thread was designed around troubleshooting the issues that face owners of the 5960X ONLY.  The 8-core 5960X is so plagued that NO ONE has gotten El Capitan to run on it (as far as I'm aware).  It is not the X99 platform that is the issue, it's the CPU.  I'm sure if you started a new thread about your issues more than a few people (including myself) would guide you through, however this isn't the place for it...

Hello, i mount recently a hackintosh with MSI x99 gaming 9 ack, i7 5960x and 980ti on Yosemite. But now 1 month that El Capitan is available and no sign for 5960 under El Capitan. I hope so that programmers can fix this problem !

For me, i don't try to install El Capitan because i past to much time to install Yosemite correctly.

Yeah it looks like we'll need to wait for Apple to release the open source XNU or wait for them to impliment support for the C61x chipset for new Mac Pro.

HOWEVER - Good NEWS!

Pike R. Alpha found some early signs that Apple is planning on a MacPro7,1 release soon!  He found a new model identifier in AppleUSBXHCIPCI.kext/Contents/Info.plist under 10.11.1 that lists identical data to the 2013 Mac Pro.  He admits that Apple only truly knows what's going on, but based on his knowledge of said things, I would be pretty positive to assume it's plausible we may see the new Mac Pro soon.   You can read his blog post here: https://pikeralpha.wordpress.com/2015/11/01/first-signs-of-new-macpro71-found-in-el-capitan/ with a full disclosure on what he found including the XML snippet from which his hypothesis is based.

  • 3 weeks later...

What I'm confused about is why the 5820K and 5830K work fine but the 5960X does not.  The two rollback kexts required (AppleACPIPlatform.kext, etc.) are PCI related, correct?  So, shouldn't PCI configuration be handled exactly the same by OS X for the 5820K and the 5690X given that they're both using the same chipset?  If you inject the same CPUID for the 5820K as the 5960X shouldn't booting just fly right through.  Sadly, I've tried this to no avail.

For those trying to boot into el capitan with the 5960X where does the boot process hang?

Same issue.  Really don't understand why the 5280K works but this does not.  You said that RampageDev has this on his radar, correct?  Do you know what the exact issue is?  I know it's related to the two PCI kexts, but I'm trying to wrap my head around why the 5280K works just fine with them and the 5960X does not.

Nobody knows, and that's part of the problem is that it doesn't really make any sense.

I'm not sure if any of you have seen Pike's skylake binary patch for skylake's AppleAPIC.kext, but I'm thinking we might be able to do a simple binary patch to AppleACPIPlatform.kext

I haven't heard about this, do you have a link?

EDIT: Disregard, I found the patch.

I think a simple binary patch is the best option, I mean even if we did get the Mavericks kexts to work, we certainly can't be rolling back kexts forever. Unfortunately I don't know how to use a dissassembler very well - I've looked at both kexts and found nothing that meant anything to me. Maybe we should start looking at the Intel datasheets like Pike does.

Guys, We need a someone that compile the 10.9.5 pci kexts to el capitan. If we prepare a donation budget it is possible that some of the coders will be motivated to do so.

Are people using the 5820K and 5830K in El Capitan using 10.9.5 kexts?  Or, are they using the native 10.11 kexts?

Where can we find the source for the 10.9.5 PCI kexts?

Given that the 5820K and 5830K are working with the 10.11 kexts (presumably), shouldn't we be able to do a binary patch of the 10.11 kexts to get this working with the 5960X?

I would gladly donate to whoever can help me get El Cap running with Clover on my 5960X/X99 Deluxe rig.

Actually, I'm still trying to get Yosemite to work. Anybody wanna help me with that? I'm looking all over & am amazed that I've not been able to get it working yet.
