Hi all,

I have a dell inspiron 7348 with Intel broadwell-U with i7-5500U (and of course Intel HD Graphics 5500) processor and i'm trying to boot into El Capitan install for more than two weeks with no luck.

i don't want to be rude but can anyone reply a basic steps of what i SHOULD do because i read tons of articles and non of the really helped.

this is what i have done in a nutshell:

1. Used terminal to copy El Capitan.app to usb (Note i'm using the dev beta version)

2. Installed clover (what checkboxes are neccessary?)

3. Used Vietnam tolls to install appropriate tools and kexts for my laptop

4. rebooted -> chose the installer from clover => Black screen

* Note that i tried similar procedure with yosemite but with the same result

i realy appreciate your help with this one and thanks for all

every laptop need different configuration.

so, we can't tell you what to check when you install clover.

for sure, you must have fakesmc.kext in your clover folder (EFI/CLOVER/kexts/others/file.kext)

secondly, you must have minimal efi drivers to put in EFI/CLOVER/drier64uefi, like:

hfsplus.efi

EmuVariableUefi-64

OsxAptioFix2DRV-64

in your clover config.plist, you must have ig-platform-id set to a working one, eg: 0x16160002 for HD5500

you must have Video Ram configured at least to 64mb.

you can set it in your bios normaly, or you can patch it, refer to:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/305710-guide-intel-hd-graphics-5500-on-os-x-yosemite-10103/

you can try my hp 820 G2 guide:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/308047-guide-hp-elitebook-820-840-g2-i5-5300u-hd5500-el-capitan-eng/

if you can't boot, when you're on clover, hit "space" and boot selecting "verbose mode".

take a shot of the error, ans post it there.

without knowinf the error, we can not help you.

cheers

@duduclx Thanks for your reply.

I have done most of what you said:

1. FakeSMC is in (EFI/CLOVER/kexts/others/) and ((EFI/CLOVER/kexts/10.10.5)

2. hfsplus.efi & EmuVariableUefi-64 & OsxAptioFix2DRV-64 are in (EFI/CLOVER/drier64uefi)

3. I think this is the part where i am failing. could you please elaborate how to configure config.plist properly please?

4. Video Ram in my windows machine (Dedicated Video Memory) is 128MB

5. Now the most important part which makes me post here that i'm always using -v boot flag and the problem is there is nothing showing on screen. only black screen with no messages or any text. this is what drives me crazy.

I have windows 10 installed on the same SSD and i cant risk removing it until i get the mac os installer to boot, so could this be part of the problem?

Update: I followed your method step by step (including the linked post) and guess what? still black screen with verbose mode

Thanks

at boot, to go your bios setting (pressing specific bouton, maybe F10, it should be marked at first second at the boot).

BTW, i have the same HD5500 (or nearly the same), and i use 512Mb on my bios setup.

if you still can't boot, please, post your EFI.

cheers

So i went to the BIOS and couldn't find any related thing here. referring to your linked topic, where is the this file (AppleIntelBDWGraphicsFramebuffer) located in ElCap?

Isn't the patch you are using in CC under KextstoPatch (disabled:AppleIntelBDWGraphicsFramebuffer) is supposed to give the same result? should i use the HEX provided by Austere.J instead of yours?

I mean there should be something wrong with installers that i'm using, right? because i can boot to clover and that's it! OS X installer is just a black screen even with verbose mode on.

UPDATE: I just noticed something strange. when i plug the installer usb on windows it shows the EFI partition only (as it's supposed to be!) but when i mount it in VirtualBox's OS X it shows only the installer volume (without EFI partition). is it normal? or are they somehow "seprated"?

the disabled:AppleIntelBDWGraphicsFramebuffer is provided by Rehabman.

this allow the good memory size, regarding minimal bios setting (64Mb).

but if your bios is not 64Mb or more, it will fail.

here a step to patch your bios:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-laptop-support/162062-guide-intel-hd-graphics-5500-os-x-yosemite-10-10-3-a.html

surely.

Efi is Fat32 partition, windows recognised it, and hide in Mac os x.

Os X installer is Mac journalised format, windows don't recognise it.

So, this is completely normal.

About your EFI:

remove this from EFI/CLOVER/drivers54UEFI:

CsmVideoDxe-64.efi

OsxAptioFixDrv-64.efi

in EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other

bad fakesmc.kext

replace it with this one:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-sUmdgLOBgBZFh1ZTExa1c2Ync/view

your clover Config.plist:

you have surely edited a old one.

many things are check, but should not.

i have edited it, try with this one:

config.plist.zip

It should work.

(thanks to try this this modification and report, then try others solutions).

I forgot to ask:

in your bios setting, to you have this mode:

AHCI

AHCI with CSM --> this one is surely the best to have working windows and mac !

CSM only ?

if not, try different ig-platform-id in clover.

0x16260006 should work too.

and you can also try each one listed as broadwell:

https://www.firewolf.science/2015/04/framebuffer-data-extracted-from-appleintelbdwgraphicsframebuffer-binary/

ps:

Yosemite will never boot.

You must install a version of El Capitan (developer beta, public beta, gold).

nb:

you can also try an other video port.

Okay we have a progress here, the good news is i can now see verbose mode working (i guess the problem was caused by the faulty FakeSMC).

the bad news is it stops at some point and restarts automatically as shown in the last second screenshot i could get.

post-1594581-0-29877500-1442917237_thumb.jpg

i didn't patch DVMT because as i said earlier i have it set to 128MB (Dedicated video memory).

P.S: my BIOS settings only have AHCI option

Thanks

the problem was the OsxAptioFixDrv-64.efi (conflict with OsxAptioFixDrv2-64.efi)

and bad fakesmc.kext

what version of El capitan are you running ?

Only Developer preview 1 and 2, Public Beta 1 have yosemite boot arg.

if you have a higher version of El Capitan, uncheck :

- dart=0

- rootless=0

- gux-defer-usb2

you only need kext-dev-mode=1

I think you have CSM/UEFI option in your Bios, try something like:

disable the secure boot first .

Then , Advanced tab -> System Configuration .

Then you can see the boot mode option .

I'm 99% sure that the problem is relative to bios setting.

I have "OS X 10.11 Developer Beta" version.

I tried to play witht boot flags alittle bit but i end up in booting failed. Secure boot is disabled and i searched BIOS bit by bit but nothing is there. I disabled "Speedstep" and "Virtualization" but nothing.

The problem is DVMT related. Pick 64 or 96MB as DVMT, else you will get KP at AppleIntelBDWGraphics, or blackscreen and reboot

I'm almost certain now its DVMT related issue. I'm trying to change that according to Austere.J post but i have a problem dumping the BIOS so i can proceed. or even using the other method of patching AppleIntelBDWGraphicsFramebuffer but i can't find the file.

Patch kext won't work, you have to dump your bios to see what you need to change. Use Universal Bios Backup Tool, it helps

mmmm It says " Can not identify the BIOS".

I took a step further by checking the custom and proceeded anyway and took the next steps but couldnt get a result. Is there any other software because i googled and for the life of me i couldn't find any (maybe i need to practice googling).

Note i have windows 10 installed

activate secure boot and virtualization.

remove useless part, like Wlan wake/boot, port, and more.

try as much combo as you can,

if it still fail, then, DVMT is your last step to do.

in clover, try to check:

drop_oem_dsm

drop_oem_ssdt

when you are on clover, you can dump dsdt and ssdt by pressing F4 and fn+F4.

not sure that is usefull, but if you can share it, maybe we will find something on it.

Not helpful at all. 9 Series mobos and laptops need to uncheck Drop OEM SSDT, else you will get "Still waiting for root device"

Alright,

So I installed the dell utility for BIOS but still couldn't change anything. All the softwares I install cannot identify the BIOS. So I thought I will try to revert to an older version of the BIOS (I'm currently A07 maybe will revert to A03) will that work? As you said the problem is probably caused by DVMT so I'm trying to give at shot.

I'll give you all the feedback for both ways tomorrow.

If you are using someone else's DSDT and SSDTs, then don't use them

Sorry for the late reply, it was a busy weekend.

So, I took the path of changing the DVMT this time. I was able to extract the BIOS using a tool called "BACKUP Tools 12" and i did manage to follow the topic of @Austere.J but i failed to do the last step with EFI Shell. for some reason i couldn't boot into the USB which had the EFI Shell in it (USB/Boot/bootx64.efi).

could someone please provide a the file that worked for him? I even used the file from clover which have the same name

Last time was using somebody else's DSDT indeed. This time I will try to patch it myself or do you think i should keep it for post installation at the moment?
