I got the Power Management working for full speed. I think Turbo is working to but can't be sure as I haven't found anything like iStat or HWMonitor that works so I can see frequency of the cores.

It's not a fantastically powerful machine with its old architecture, slow RAM, etc. but it works. I'm attaching two screens showing Geekbench 4 CPU and OpenGL scores.

I'm still on iMac SMBIOS but that's OK for now.

 

The thing to tackle next is USB... I only have the USB3 card working for now. Any guidance will be MUCH appreciated. :)

I have the USBInjectAll.kext but I think there is more stuff needed. I tried a bit but haven't figured it out yet.

I'm no hacker.. don't know how to get the USB working and the guides aren't helping much here. Maybe they should but I'm just not getting it? :rofl:

If anybody can show/tell me how or point me to the right place I'd be very grateful.

I would love to get this working perfectly and make an OpenCore guide or pretty much finished EFI folder for the Z800.

My Z800 is running stable (I hope) now on Catalina with OpenCore and MacPro6,1 SMBIOS. I just have to fix the USB.

Uptime now is more than 21 hours and I've been loading it with video encoding too.

Final Cut Pro and network seems stable. Not sure the Power Management is 100% yet but I will see when I have monitoring kexts and software running.

GeekBench5 Multicore score of 6114 so that's good.

 

I had so many problems with the computer just freezing up without even giving me a normal kernel panic.

It turns out it's the combination of PCIe cards, graphics & a cheap USB3 card.. the latter is what's causing the problems I think, I can still cause a freeze by unplugging and plugging in certain things to it.

I ended up moving the RX 580 to an 8 lane slot and the USB card to another slot too. That made it better but not stable until I turned off one of the ethernet ports.

 

I will look closer at the USB ports now.

At a later point I will trick the the motherboard so it won't complain about fans/usb not being connected and demand F1 press to boot.

I'm still struggling with USB, can't get the mobo USB ports to work and it seems my USB3 card is acting up and making the computer unstable.
I did manage to run the USBMap.command to make an injector kext but only when booted to Mojave with Clover.

It doesn't work though, neither does USBInjectAll.

 

I haven't tried Big Sur yet, haven't even looked into getting the beta installer.

When is the final supposed to be released?

These weird lock-ups might not have anything to do with my OC/OSX install .... resetting all BIOS settings and testing with Ubuntu.

Could be a problem with memory, motherboard or even one of the CPU's.

I have a lot of other things to do but I'll try figure it out.
Will also try to post a clean EFI folder so others can try.

 

EDIT:

It was hanging in Ubuntu too until I did a factory reset of the BIOS.

Perhaps the hackintosh boot loader is messing up the BIOS when trying to write NVRAM or something? (I don't know how that stuff is supposed to work.)

I remember having similar issues with my first hackintosh where I had to factory reset the BIOS to get it going again after crashing.

Now it's been running Ubuntu with mprime stress test for 4 hours. :thumbsup_anim:

EDIT2: .. and then it locked up when stopping the stress test. :thumbsdown_anim:

EDIT3: It was working well when I turned off Multiprocessor in the BIOS so I took out the second CPU and its RAM, cleaned it properly and reseated.

Seems to be working well now... :thumbsup_anim: (am I jinxing it now??)

If it hadn't been a new install I would have checked the RAM/CPU right away. And the problem often showing up when plugging/unplugging USB threw me off.

It has now handled Prime95 for a while and stopping and restarting the torture test many times (this was impossible before).

The USBMap kext I made with the commandline tool in Mojave isn't working but now it might be stable enough to dig around in the IORegistry without freezing so I'll try to get USB ports working.

My machine is very stable but I haven't managed to get proper power management or built in USB working. I haven't even bothered with audio since I'm using USB audio that's connected to the USB3 card.
I'm using NullCPUPowerManagement.kext and it's switching the whole packages between 1596 MHz and 3591 MHz (one multiplier higher than X5690 specs). I have Enhanced Turbo turned on in BIOS.

It stays cool with cores around 30-35 C under "idle" load with normal background tasks and around 68-70 C under Prime95 24 thread torture test with small FFT for maximum CPU stress/heat.

I'm using MacPro6,1 SMBIOS.

 

I will share a cleaned up OC EFI folder but also include the ssdt files I have for power management and USB map even though I can't make them work.
I'm just not knowledgeable enough to get it to work fully but would love it if someone else want to give it a try.

 

Including pics of the temps, frequencies and speed test of the NVME boot drive in the PCIe slot.

If I run the speed test for a long time it can start throttling down due to higher temps.

Also, this NVME drive should but be bootable by BIOS but I haven't gotten this to work so I'm using a regular SSD for OC (much preferred over USB).

I might look into getting the factory overclocked RX 580 to perform better but I'm not too concerned. :)

It's not very tidy and pretty now but this is how it looks inside.
I'll probably put a bunch of SSD's in there but don't want to use the original HD rack so I'll make a new, simple one with better air flow.
Plenty of fans at low speed gives pretty silent operation.
The CPU coolers are actually a bit big but they fit perfectly when I kinda slid them together so the fins are interlaced.

Hello everyone and happy new year, someone is looking at installing Big Sur on Z400 with OpenCore or Clover. Me with Clover I arrive at the installation, I start it but it freezes 7min from the end no way to find out why and with OpenCore I have a little more trouble because it gives me a kernel panic certainly due to my Kexts. Hi everyone,

I need some help. First of all thanks a lot for all your work, this topic is fantastic! I'm a newie and I'm trying to install high sierra on my z800 (I tried also with Mojave). I read a lot of pages in this topic and I tried different guides but I always stop at the same point: I create the usb pen (I used buddy app but also the terminal code), it starts and go successfully (except some error and warning) to the panel control, from there I see the ssd where I would like to install and I can format it (I choose AFPS)... but then when I start the installation I get always the same error message: this copy of high sierra is corrupted and you can't use it to install high sierra (I tried different version of the installer 10.13.0., 10.13.6 downloaded from apple store but the result is always the same). 

I used all the kext recommended by rocky12, and also the config.plist and the dsdt rocky12 released. But nothing. 

Then I used the config.plist that already worked on my previous installation on the same z800 (el capitan).

I used also the same dsdt but I don't know if it's ok or not.

Anyway I stop always at the same point. (see image) 

please can you help me?

Hi tale77, I once had the same problem with my Z400. Reason was a reset of my bios which also resetted the system clock. After setting the date to the correct value the installation image did work without any problems. I don't really think this will solve your problem, but maybe you check it just to be sure ...

so... finally I succeeded!

Mojave is running pretty well on my z800 but I still have some problems with the GPU.

I don't use whatewheregreen + Lilu because it caused KP in the installation process.

After the installation, Mojave was running very slowly and bad and I had always glitches on the monitor (only 1 port was working). So I found a guide to patch the Framebuffer using Orinoco and adapting it to my GPU (a sapphire radeon rx 580 pulse lite edition). So at the moment I'm patching the AMD9500Controller using clover injection that solved many problems but not all of them (I read it's not a good way, better could be to modify the dsdt but I don't know how to do! In some other treads I read that it's not possible to do Framebuffer patching with Mojave but I'm doing it, how is it possible?). The workstation is stable and fast, everything is working, it even comes back from the sleep and all the video ports are working but only 2 at a time (if I connect a third monitor I get glitches and no video but the sound works by HDMI). Anyway even if I use only 2 monitors I get glitches and I feel the GPU is not running very well. Someone can help me? 

I share my efi folder (but I had to remove a file in order to stay under 10MB. the file is Firmware.scap that normally is in the folder APPLE inside the EFI folder).

Hi Rockey, congratulations on getting your Z800 back in action. That is great news. If possible, it would be great if you could share with us how to get macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 running on the Z800.

 

Would it be the same way you got Monterey working on your system? 

 

I am still using 10.14.6 with Clover. I will need to learn how to use OC and now I am ready. Could you share your files to use them as reference for my template.

 

You mentioned you used OC Legacy Mode, is this the same as OC Legacy Patcher?

Hi Rockey, thanks for your help. I am checking at the moment the nvram links you posted to see how to be able to update to BS.

 

To edit the config.plist and to generate a random a serial number to my SMBIOS I will use ProperTree and GenSMBIOS. Do have other recommendations to edit/generate this?

 

I am still thinking of the way I was able to configure Clover with Clover Configurator but I know with OC now is different.

Asking about legacy Patcher I didn't use, so I can't say much about it, USB installer was created with dosdude1 Catalina Patcher and the upgrade method was Emulated NV RAM. Hello @Rocky12, I have a Z600, I have used its opencore folder (both 0.7.5 and 0.7.6) but the computer does not reach the boot boot, with version 0.7.5 it shows an error message from the system disk (not there is boot disk) and with version 0.7.6 the message changes to Waiting for boot disk. I use a Sandisk 64gb USB stick formatted in MacOs + with registry, then dosdude1 catalina patcher and then mount EFI from the USB stick and add its EFI Open Core. I insert the memory in the front USB of the Z600 but I do not get more. Do I have to install something else? Thanks and best regards.

Yes, I have other systems with open core, but this one I have not been able to make it work with open core, even so, this EFI works for my Z600 and a Z800 that I had a long time ago, the problem is that with OpenCore EFI I cannot pass from the blue screen of the Bios, the boot does not appear and an error message appears instead. In EFI Clover you have to install clover, it is not enough to copy the EFI, the clover installer installs files on the hard disk or on the USB drive, but when working with Open Core this is not necessary, with OpenCore it is enough to copy the efi from one disk to another to boot, that's why I am surprised not being able to access the opencore menu, it is strange ...

Thanks friend, today I had time to get in front of the computer and I was able to install Catalina on my Z600, I was unaware of the "BootLegacy" installation process, at first I had no problems installing it on the USB, but then, when I wanted to do it on the SSD I had problems, I could solve them by changing the SIP to be able to write to the SSD container, now everything is fine, the EFI folder was based on Opencore 0.6.0, today I have been able to update to 0.6.8, I stopped here because in 0.6. 9 I had a boot error, tomorrow I will try to overcome it and get to version 0.7.6. Thank you very much for your help, I will try the Big Sur installation shortly.

Looking to get Big Sur going with OpenCore on my Z800!
I have to run Final Cut Pro on the Z800 now but the libraries require the latest version (10.5.2) and that won't run on Catalina.

I wanted to download the OC version/EFI that @Rocky12 posted but it's gone now and I don't know if he will read this, does anybody else have it?

Any tips, directions, links, etc. will be very much welcomed!
