Clover Problems and Solutions

Hi Slice

My BGM256 theme currently has un-optimised 256px PNG images because when I created it, I found Clover would fail to load optimised versions on the icons. I’ve not looked in to it until now where I’ve got so far but am now stuck and ask if you can explain to me the problem?

I have traced the problem to function Zlib_decompress() in Clover/rEFIt_UEFI/Platform/picopng.c which always returns 25. The DBG line at #699 prints: compression method 0 and CINFO=0 FDICT=0

I'm not sure how to proceed. Is there any way I can optimise the 256px icons whilst passing this check for compression method of 8? Clover happily loads and decodes 128px optimised icons so I don't understand why it fails with 256px icons.

Thanks

EDIT: Here's an optimised and un-optimised version of the 256px os_cap.icns (PNG file) for ref.

Using larger 256px theme icons has a drawback of it taking longer to draw the GUI.

However I’ve noticed that Clover attempts to load the icons for all linux loaders:

I don’t have any Linux installations on my system so it would be good to skip this.

I see a current config.plist entry exists for GUI->Scan->Kernel which works to enable/disable automatic Linux kernel scan. Can the disable option be extended to also prevent the check for linux loaders loop from running?

I’ve tested with the following for Clover/rEFIt_UEFI/entry_scan/loader.c line #1012

   // check for linux loaders
    if (gSettings.KernelScan != KERNEL_SCAN_NONE) {
        for (Index = 0; Index < LinuxEntryDataCount; ++Index) {
          AddLoaderEntry(LinuxEntryData[Index].Path, L"", LinuxEntryData[Index].Title, Volume,
                     LoadOSIcon(LinuxEntryData[Index].Icon, L"unknown", 128, FALSE, TRUE), OSTYPE_LIN, OSFLAG_NODEFAULTARGS);
        }
    }
Before:

1:401  0:000  Scanning loaders...
4:485  0:002  GUI ready

After:

1:417  0:000  Scanning loaders...
2:516  0:002  GUI ready
Is this something that may be useful or would this have adverse affects on users with Linux installations?

Thinking more about this, maybe the above suggestion may well prevent users with Linux installations from seeing those entries in the GUI. Maybe instead there could be another config.plist entry for skipping Linux completely?

Perhaps something like:
<key>GUI</key>
<dict>
  <key>Scan</key>
  <dict>
    <key>Linux</key>
    <false/>
  </dict>
</dict>

By default is could be enabled, but setting it to false would do something like the following:
  -UINTN         VolumeIndex, Index;
  -REFIT_VOLUME *Volume;
  -EFI_GUID     *PartGUID;

  +UINTN         VolumeIndex; //, Index;
  +REFIT_VOLUME *Volume;
  +//EFI_GUID     *PartGUID;

And skip the ‘check for linux loaders’ and ‘check for linux kernels’ lines 1012-1248

May be a better solution?

Is this deprecated?

	<key>Devices</key>
	<dict>
		<key>ForceHPET</key>
		<true/>

Not deprecated. It presents in Clover but not good tested on real devices.

@Slice! One more please...

If i add:

FixRegions_10000000

NewWay_80000000

and generate a dsdt.aml after the reboot, will those two fixes will be integrated on the newly generated dsdt.aml?

Patch of DSDT is temporary in RAM and affect on loaded OSX (not Windows or Linux).

If you make DarwinDamper report in loaded OSX then you can find here new patched DSDT.

I've found a bug with picopng but have no idea how to resolve the issue so instead I've worked around it by changing the theme files.

Overview:

I’ve now looked in to this issue further and have found the reason for my optimised BGM256 theme volume icons failing to load in Clover’s GUI is due to an issue with picopng.

I’ve been using pngquant to optimise the PNG images in themes and while all has been good with 128px images, it turns out that the 256px images are resaved with more than one IDAT (data) chunks, which is legal. According to the PNG spec, in particular

There can be multiple IDAT chunks; if so, they must appear consecutively with no other intervening chunks. The compressed datastream is then the concatenation of the contents of all the IDAT chunks. The encoder can divide the compressed datastream into IDAT chunks however it wishes. (Multiple IDAT chunks are allowed so that encoders can work in a fixed amount of memory; typically the chunk size will correspond to the encoder's buffer size.) It is important to emphasize that IDAT chunk boundaries have no semantic significance and can occur at any point in the compressed datastream.

This however causes a problem for picopng and although I haven’t worked out the exact reason I think to have at least, from a few hours of testing, narrowed the issue down to reallocating memory for more data in function vector8_resize().

Each time function PNG_decode() reads an IDAT chunk, it stores the data in memory until it finds either another IDAT chunk or IEND. I’ve found that after finding two IDAT chunks, a third IDAT chunk requires a reallocaton of memory and this process seems to be where the data read so far is lost.

Before line #236
data = png_alloc_realloc(p->data, newsize);
the data in memory correctly contains the IDAT data read so far. I added a debug statement to print the first entry; p->data[0]=78. 78 is the first byte of the PNG image data.

But after lines #237-241
if (data)
{
p->allocsize = newsize;
p->data = (UINT8 *) data;
p->size = size;
the data in memory is lost and p->data[0]=0

My head was spinning at this point and I couldn’t fathom any more out so instead I looked to see if I could optimise the PNG images while retaining just a single IDAT chunk.

In the end, the only method I have found to do this is to use https://tinypng.com which turns out even out-performs pngquant for compression. Using this I’ve managed to downsize BGM256 to 2.9MB, from 4.5MB and have a working theme for Clover. I'll upload the revised BGM256 theme to the theme repo. (EDIT: Done). But with this optimisation, and the option to skip linux scanning, this 256px theme loads way faster then it did at the beginning of the week :P

EDIT: If anyone is interested in looking at my tests and maybe trying to fix the problem with multiple IDAT chunks, I'm attaching a .zip containing:
- test os_cap.icns (the PNG file with .icns extension)
- the modified picopng.c with added debug print statements
- the relevant log section from Clover.

Hello,

A new table will appear in BIOS every time i boot my computer.

To clear these tables, I must remove the hard disk (which Clover is installed in), boot, shutdown, plug in the hard disk, then boot again.

Is this a bug?

Nah, this isn't normal, this is a bug in CORE_DXE not detecting a boot option is already present and thus adding one more on every boot. Sadly I don't know (or remember?) how to solve it.

If so this is a bug of UEFI firmware. How to solve? Ask OEM.

I got a bug with my clover reading my RAM. I have 16GB (2x8) Crucial DDR4 2133Mhz RAM. Clover will only report each stick as 4GB. When I manually set them to 8GB, only the first slot will report any RAM.

Yes, DDR4 is poorly supported.

I can't do this because of absence such hardware.

If some other developer send me a patch then I can accept it.

Hi Guys,

as my computer have EFI, i'm using Clover in EFI mode long long time ago. I have ESP partititon, and i'm using the ESP install option in installer to update my Clover install. It worked without glitch. But some weeks ago the installer doesn't find the ESP partition, and install the Clover onto my root HFS disk, it creates an EFI folder in the root. I tried to install Clover with and without mounting the ESP partition first, but it isn't works.

Why doesn't fin the ESP partition? Why it does install onto my root partition? How can i fix it?

Please, find the attached install log.

Thanks!

Because of

 2:          Apple_CoreStorage OSX

I'm successfully using CoreStorage drive with Clover installed on it.

The trick is to install OS X on a non CoreStorage drive and after installing Clover on it (or on the EFI partition of it), convert the drive to CoreStorage with:

diskutil cs convert "Macintosh HD"

I'm assuming the installer can't find the EFI partition on a CoreStorage drive, because if you install Clover on ESP on a CoreStorage drive, it "successfully" installs it, but not on the EFI partition but the main partition. Maybe it is a known bug?

Well, Clover has issues with Fusion Drives. You also can't boot the Recovery partition on one. It's probably because the EFI and Recovery partitions are on (seperate) physical disks while the system volume is running on a logical one.

I just let it install to /EFI and then mount the EFI partition and copy the folder across.

If Clover could install to an already mounted EFI partition (instead of insisting on mounting it itself) that might be a workaround.

Take into account then at boot time, before OSX loaded, there is no any CoreStorage. It exists only after OSX will loaded and run because it is Apple feature, feature supported by OSX not by BIOS.
