Old Mac Pro (and any decent hack I guess) blows new Mac "Pro" out of the water

Yeah, I found this pretty revealing:

So basically a five year old machine with an upgraded GPU shows the muscles to the ashcan in almost every 5k Benchmark!

And I think a decent Hack will even fare better ...

Now, how can I upgrade the GPU on the new Mac "Pro"? Ah wait ... I have to wait .... for Apple to give me a completely new machine I have to buy ...

Saved my day :lol::P  :thumbsup_anim:

At that resolution, cpu bottlenecks are so low and each cpu will run about the same. It's mainly using the GPU power and memory at that point. Look at the Mac Pro benchmarks with other gpus inside of, and notice the lower framerates.

D700 Firepro is not a gaming GPU either, it is a rendering GPU. I also believe that Mac Os X does not use Crossfire, so only one D700 is being stressed.

The real advantage the Mac Pro tower has is its expandibility. However, the new Mac Pro has higher disk transfer rates. You can always put a PCIE SSD or controller in the Mac Pro though, and while there are thunderbolt converters to PCIE they are very expensive.

I know what you mean, but on the other hand the 2010 models overall achitecture is way older than the new one. And apparently it can still keep up! Also do not forget that it is impossible to run the nMP at full load for a longer time (ie. GPU + CPU at 100%) due to thermal and power limits. Still think that the nMP is what other Apple products are more and more, and that is "function follows form". Lets face it, Apple is no longer a company who makes computers for professionals, they have become a gadget company. And I fear that OS X (the sole reason I am still on this platform!) will suffer even more, which would be very sad imho.

PS: and the nMP has two GPUs while the others were run with one if I read that right ...

There is Crossfire under Mac OS X with the nMP GPU's when Rendering in Apple Programs.

That said each System has diffrent uses and should not be looked at as one is better then the other but one fits the Needs of the end user better.

As for Bbetts comment on how the D700 is not a gaming Card, neither is the Titan Series which Nvidia markets as a Math Card that can game. Titan Series is designed for Math computing and is why the 980 vs Titan X are so Close in games because they are designed do diffrent things.

Benchmarks are only meaningful to quantify non real world usage. Mac pro are not made for the masses, they are designed for a few select purposes, which im pretty sure apple will have researched the market and the needs of their customers. Maybe it is just that YOU are not that customer. Plenty of old mac pro for sale all over the place, stick with those if you dont like the trashcans. I consider the waste paper basket look as an anti theft feature. :lol: Saying that, i certainly will not be buying one for that kind of money.
