Braixen
I have a Samsung 850 PRO SSD that I'm using with Windows 8.1 right now. I have considered using OS X on the SSD in a dual-boot scenario, but right now I'm not intending to do it because of time constraints and seeing if it's worth it (I have a 256GB drive). However, I do have OS X on an older drive (500GB WD HDD) and I am wondering if TRIM is needed when using the SSD but not as a boot drive. While I'm not new to OS X installation, I am however quite new to using SSDs, so I don't want to shorten the lifespan of my SSD.
styrian
Hello! If you are using Clover as bootloader, you can enable trim by kextpatch function. For using Chameleon as bootloader you can try this: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/files/file/329-trim-enabler/ or google for the commercial version of Trim Enabler (working to enable trim without time limit, some functions are shrinked down without licence). Have fun.
Braixen
Thanks! I do use Clover EFI as my bootloader, so I'll use the kext patching functions there. As a newbie to using SSDs, I knew that TRIM had to be enabled when I was booting on it, but not when it was being used for data. I'm going to patch the ACHI driver now. Thanks~

Thanks~Trim is used for cleaning up unused sectors and effiency for the controller. So whenever you store data on your SSD trim should be enabled
