They can hinder the air flow by being a construction path that will restrict air movement. Second find a high RPM (rotation per minute) fan with good CFM (cubic foot per minute). This will reduce 1. Noise and 2. help move air in an efficient way. typically you will find some fan's that are 2000Rpm and a db (decibel) less then 25 which is humming sound. Do not be fooled that is the max speed and can be loud. They are actually set to 1800Rpm which is a great speed and have from 19 to 26db which will be quiet on full load.
