ryhart18
Hi all, I'm new around here. I'm planning (started) to build a hackintosh. My shopping list so far is: MB: Gigabyte Z87M-D3H CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K GC: EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 Superclocked ACX 4GB RAM: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9 Vengeance 8GB Drive: Crucial CT512MX100SSD1 512GB PSU: Unsure yet 2.5" to 2.5" adapter + odds and sods I've so far got my case, motherboard and SSD. Now, I'm wondering what is the best way to mount a mATX board inside the 2008 enclosure. Is there a motherboard tray that I can purchase, or do I need to buy/move the standoffs (if so, how)? I'm looking to build a hackintosh which doesn't take too much modding.
MacUser2525
First hit in a quick Google search most times people are using old G5 cases so you will need to check if they have trays for a 2008 plus you need to get modified cable to connect to the front panel, it is not really an easy simple procedure that you seem to be looking for you are probably better off using PC case. https://www.google.ca/search?q=hackintosh+mac+pro+mod+case+tray&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb&gfe_rd=cr&ei=ml9_VJT8MNXIlAGxhIKAAw

ryhart18
I've received a Lian Li V351 MicroATX Motherboard Tray and have purchased a Dremmel, which seems great. I'm going to be cutting off the excess metal from the tray so the rear fan vent isn't lost, cutting the 2008 case, keeping the rear vent for the fan in position. Finally, JB Welding the original standoffs into position. I'm also concerned about the PSU, I would ideally like to use the original hole on the case, but I don't think this will be possible, so I've ordered a Lian Li Power Supply - Mounting Plate PE-03A. I will be taking lots of photos during the build in the hope of helping others.
Long Cat
Sure you want to mod a 2008 mac pro just yet? They're actually still pretty decent machines. Stick in an SSD and a new graphics card and you've a pretty solid machine even by today's standards. Depending on your model, you could probably sell it for about $400, get a second hand G5 case for ~$50 and save yourself at least $300.
Mr. Xtreme
Yeah Mac Pro's are greate if they work.

Alternatively he could sell parts left over from conversion probably get free case. With today's standards he can get a third more processing power with a modest 4ghz overclock using according to HWMonitor on my comparable setup flat out 100% load at 4ghz 65 watts of power used vs the MP3,1 I have when doing the same thing of 300+ watts for one third more time. Not to mention the idle used of ~10 watts PC vs the ~170 for the Mac Pro.
Long Cat
Yeah you're completely right. These things do put out a lot of heat and chew through a lot of power. Still, you can palm them off to photo/ graphic designer types (who don't really care about things like that) for a fair bit. Just something to think about before ripping one of these things apart. Indeed they do winter is coming on here and I am already missing that extra heat in the room, I just may switch back to the 3,1 for the rest of the winter...

Just like any other PC with 8 cores and good graphics. 3,1 is still fantastic machine and in demand
