Hi. This is my proposed build for under £150 GBP OS X 10.8 I have ordered all the parts already as far as I know they are all supported.  Can some of you guys please look over my build and let me know if  all is supported on ML 10.8 or any other version. I have tried posting on other sites

 T***m*cx86.com but had no reply.

Here are my specs

Dell OptiPlex 755 small form --->  (£79) eBay

  • Graphics card = ATI Radeon HD 3450 --->  (included)
  • Wireless = TP Link WN881ND --->  (£15)
  • Ethernet = Intel gigabit  (I think)

Other specs are

  • 4GB DDR 2 --->  (included)
  • Core2Quad 2.4GHz Wohoo  ---> (included)
  • SanDisk 120GB SSD --->  (£49)

I would like to stay to budget as much as I can so I would be looking for
the cheapest possible option for a low pro graphics card. Do you know if the card installed works on lion?

I can upgrade at a later date hardware and OS. Though if there are cheap enough card for say £30 I will just get one now.

I have seen post titled " ATI 3450 working " but I cant remember what iteration/incarnation OS X it was running. Too tired to look again now.

Hey thanks for the replies guys. Appreciate the help :)

I would look into a 6450 or 5450 then. 6450 would work ootb, but is a little more expensive, a 5450 is more in your price range but requires the device id to be added. There's also the nvidia geforce 610 which I think is around the same price.

Ok so I am looking for cards 6450 right now and there are a few cheap used cards going. But is an AMD ATI 6450 the same as any other brand? Is there a difference in the PCB/schematic layout that may cause an Asus card to work but an AMD to be problematic? Or is it just a case of getting the right chipset and a manufacturer will follow the basic schematic guidelines on a given chipset datasheet? In short, will all designs around the same chipset be supported? If not what is the best make to go for, for a working 6450 OOB? Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help. I decided to go with the sapphire HD5450 mainly due to price.... As well as the obvious dimensions of heat sink and so on. I have read a few posts about this card working OOB without QE/CI

but a quick kext install will enable it. I'm also going with ML2 Distro. If anyone sees a possible issue...or known definite fail.... please let me know. Otherwise, thank you all for your help. Good forum and a much better reply than "search is your friend"..! I know it is, cos search lead me to buy the effing Dell in the first place!! Anyway that is my rant about another forum. Thanks you guys here at InsanelyMac! :) :thumbsup_anim:

If you have a real Mac, I would suggest doing a retail install and I think most others here would say the same. If you don't have a real Mac, there's a few other options... You could download a preinstalled VMware image from a torrent site, and then create a retail installer there, or you could install osx with ml2, download Yosemite and then do a clean install. The reason for this is that you don't know what kexts or anything else are on the distro... Not saying there's anything malicious, because that's doubtful, but it makes it a lot more difficult to troubleshoot of things go south.

I would really recommend Yosemite or mavericks over ML. Mavericks had some huge performance improvements over ML for me, and also ML will probably stop getting security updates soon.

Regardless... Happy hacking.
