Can't Get it Stable

Howdy folks, I built my first Hackintosh from this forums instructions right after the first i7 chips were released, 08? Since then I have forgotten nearly everything. Worse, I thought any site with hacking tutorials could help. I strayed, this is my mea culpa. I like that this site is not paid and that it is about people helping each other. Works for me. I am sorry to say but I do have some memory problems, not age related - old head injury. I am smart enough to follow directions but I may not comprehend what part comes next always. And so, if anyone is willing to be kind enough and patient enough to help me, I would greatly appreciate it?

I want to upgrade my 10.6.8 machine to Mavericks and I am assuming I will again be upgrading to Yosemite very soon. I like many things about 10.6.8 however I am trying to upgrade for the following reasons; 1) many software titles are updated as 10.7 minimum - some higher, 2) I Have a modern iPhone and with my memory challenges I very much want/need to keep everything in sync for survival and for personal sanity reasons.

I had a lot of problems getting osx to install on this machine which led me to many hack "friendly" sites. Eventually I got it done using a different method than is taught here. I got it up and running, got WIFI working, but never got sound working and never got the app store to recognize me on this machine. Also, after running Mavericks for a time, when I restart it came up with messed up bios settings which always had to get reset.

Since then I Have wiped that drive again and started from scratch. I used this sites vanilla install guide for Mavericks. Now I have Mavericks installed again and this time, no sound, no internet, I can't check the app store recognizing me cause I can't get online, and when I restart it still hammers the bios settings most of the time.

Some of the apps I am now depending on to help me get organized - a critical function for me, are 10.7 and above (Gemini II, PathFinder 7).

If anyone could please help me to get this set up correctly so that I can start booting into Mavericks consistently (with Yosemite around the corner) I would be very grateful.

Thank you very much. Crossing my fingers that someone here can help.

David

Added: Just tried again. Used Chameleon, marked appropriate boxes for sound and enabled kexts, hopefully the right ones? Need guidance though. Now wont boot at all into that disk, "cant find" is the quick message. Before I Ran Chameleon this last time, after following the vanilla installation at least I could boot to that drive.

Added: Just tried again. Boots to Mavericks on an old install stick, very slow but it gets there. Still no WIFI, no sound. Tried running KEXT utility and tossed in all KEXTS I had that seemed relevant. No Joy.

Comment: What I find really frustrating about this is that I Cannot grasp how to check off steps so that I Can systematically solve the problem. Meaning, in the old days (before cars all had computer processors in them) solving a non starting car engine was relatively easy so long as you understood that you had to solve for Air, Spark, and Fuel. TO solve the problem you check for one of those three. Once you have established that was not the problem, then you check for the other of the two and eventually, the last one if need be. This is what I mean by systematic problem solving.

With this install I cannot tell what I have to have in what folder and what is conflicting with other kexts? I don't even know if this matters? I have to ask for help because, I Cannot figure out how to understand and then solve this problem. And I Can't begin to tell you how much time I have wasted on trying ...  I know I am not the only person on this list but eventually, I would sure love to get this HT up running and stable on Mavericks. Thanks again everyone.

the best way is to either boot into windows and look at the device_ids of the hardware you wish to work in a hack. start from that.

without an idea of what hardware you have, there's no telling what kext and/or method works best for you.

nowadays, we are banned to use our magic balls, so you have to get your hands dirty and look up all the hardware ID's you need to determine.

Thanks for your comments. I thought my hardware was in my postings footers?

Motherboard: Gigabyte UD4P

Processor:  i7 920, (2.67 unclocked)

RAM:   Corsair 1600 DDR3, 6GB (3x2GB)

Current OS: 10.6.8

Video: EVGA 9800GTX+ 512

Boot drive: 1 TB

What other information do you need?

I am using this HT that I am now running SNL on. I am trying to get Mavericks totally stable on another 1 TB drive on this same machine. Once I can do this and it feels stable, I will start migrating files and use that as my main drive.

I currently boot to a thumb drive which has one of the competitors to this site set up as a first boot (The one with the logo that looks like a red tomato). As I have tried solutions however, I have tried using the F12 key on startup and booted directly to that drive that the vanilla install instructions told me to set up. Still no luck with that.

PS: I also have a modern MacBook Pro which has Windows installed so I can dual boot into Mavericks on Win 7 on that machine in case I need to for any reason.

Sorry to be mentioning this on this forum. I understand that I am not here to ask for help with this type install at all, and I am not doing that. UD4P does not tell us much all for your board I have P55A-UD4P it is first set of numbers for that series that is important for us to know that said since you have existing mac get the 10.9.? installer you can download in the App Store installed. Make USB install disk on that mac with in Terminal the --createinstallmedia command you can find on the net then a recent version of Chameleon installed on that stick so you can boot and do install.

Once installed you will want most likely a MacPro 4,1 or 5,1 system definition look for the Hackintosh Vietnam tool on here it has all kinds of these tools that can be installed after you have fresh install in the machine. Your video should just work with a GraphicsEnabler=Yes your network I think should be able to use the Realtek8111  a damn fine and rock solid stable driver you can get on here as well from Meize. On that other place get one of the pre-edited DSDT you can from there to use once you have fresh install completed with a known vanilla install then we here have something to work with that we know has not been messed about with so can probably help better.

Please confirm: Your motherboard is a GA-EX58-UD4P rev1 BIOS F13?

If so, after you install a bootloader (Chameleon or Clover onto your hard drive) and FakeSMC.kext into /System/Library/Extensions, you'll need

Your wifi an ASUS USB-N13? Manufacturer website has kext and wireless utility for SL and Lion which may still work for Mavericks.

If you want iCloud/Appstore/iMessage, you'll need to first install the ethernet driver and make sure it is "built in" and en0 (confirm with DPCIManager) eg

Recommended reading @pokenguyen's AIO guides for hackintosh.
Most of your kexts can be found in the Hackintosh Vietnam Tool.

If you're interested in installing Yosemite (beta3 atm), I recommend @chris1111's Clover_v2k_r2780_Special Edition_Yosemite Beta 1-2-3.

Good Luck!

Thanks very much for all the feedback. I am digesting it, downloading files and setting up for another try. Might clean out the target drive with yet another install from the vanilla install method first just to clear any of the KEXTS I have already tried ...

---------  (Tried a few things and now it's the next day) -----------

Next Steps ....   I tried the Vietnam app, threw as many options at it as I thought applied (sort of like Ray Charles driving a car).

Result: Did not change anything.

Next Steps ....   I erased the target drive, repartitioned it, GUID, and reapplied the vanilla install USB solution on my USB stick to that drive.

Result: Did not reboot after installing, tried the Vietnam method to install chameleon, drivers,

Next Steps ....   I tried the Vietnam app again, chose only what I thought should work, as sparse as possible (Still Ray Charlesing it though)

Result: Booting that drive gave me a dark screen. When I did that long ago it means that I Have not set up a proper video driver.

Comment: This is frustrating because I really don't know what I need and what I don't need. Originally there was a nice little terminal app that did all of this for me. I could choose options but if I didn't know what I Was doing it still took care of business. Sure, there are always tweaks and problems to solve, but now Chameleon and KEXT editor and Vietnam all offer so darn many options that you very quickly get to the "whats the point" feeling. And I have been trying to install this for more months than I care to mention.

ADDED: Reloaded the target disk, starting fresh (again). I can boot to it again now. Ran DPCI, tried installing what I Could, saved the results and added that data to my next post with all I could find.

--------  UPDATED 2:35 PM MST ---------

The attached document contains all I knew how to gather from running the DPCI app in Mavericks on my target machine.
DPCI manager.rtf

There I have listed the following:

  1. DPCI Manager: Status
  2. DPCI Manager: PCI List:
  3. DPCI Manager: Misc: Boot Log

I list all this information with the hope that it may help someone, help me solve my problems and make suggestions on how to best set this machine up.

What I have still to fix are the following issues:

  1. Reboot messes up BIOS settings, - SOME OF THE TIME - easily changed by delete key to bios, resetting bios, restarting but, should not be happening.
  2. Reboot hangs, must have power switched on and off to restart.
  3. App Store does not recognize this machine for purchases (OneNote): "Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance."    --->  Did update Mavericks just now to 10.9.5 no problem, Safari also.
  4. No Sound
  5. No network/ethernet/Wifi (can’t get on-line)  NOW ON-LINE
  6. I hope to update to Yosemite when it arrives out of beta phase.

My reasoning is I am falling behind on current software titles and better processes for doing things. I am moving to Mavericks to modernize my setup and I see Yosemite as the most modern version of the OS.  10.6.8 is still a great system but I cannot use the best feature of OSX (for me) which is, speech to text. I Cannot even install Dragon Dictate as that requires 10.8 minimum. Again, I am needing to modernize. Thanks as always.

Now that I am online I can update Java required to run System Info. Here are those results:

1. CMOS reset common to Gigabyte boards of that era you need the fix for that in your DSDT.aml.

2. EVOreboot.kext needed.

3. fusion71au told you most of this specifically in that posting.

Hackintosh Vietnam.

Going on my copy here 1.7.2

Chameleon Config GraphicsEnabler Yes

Chameleon Smbios 5,1 since there is no 4,1 if TYMCE panic go with a 4,1 (Chameleon Wizard for this) or delete that .kext rebuild cache with kext Utility.

Kext System Fakesmc 6.

Sound try VoodooHDA 2.8.6 if it is there in your copy.

Drive AHCIPort injector to get rid of orange icons.

Thanks. I need to take a short break, been at this all day and, just screwed it up again. Argh!!! I had internet working, got all the data together, was feeling confident, then I changed two things at once. So I can't say for sure which step messed it up, Vietnam, or Chameleon, or both?

First, I downloaded the lasted Chameleon which is actually for Yosemite. Since it didn't say NOT FOR MAVERICKS, I was thinking it was just the latest version which also was for Yosemite. OK I Screwed that up.

Next I used Vietnam to put in just a Voodoo file.

Now it is doing what it was doing before I spent the day on it, it

  1.     Boots to a dark screen so the video card is not getting recognized anymore, and
  2.     It totally kills the bios and needs to reset on restart.

If there is a suggestion to look into where the nvidea KExT was and to move it back to where it should be - to resolve that from this 10.6.8 boot, that would definitely be appreciated.

Other than that, after I take this break I will further review the earlier post thread/tutorial. I did extract the DSDT.aml file, I just don't know where to put it yet?

Ongoing thanks. I shall return.

Go to that Tony idiot site download pre-patched for your board/bios version on that board at this time DSDT.aml it should have all the fixes in it your extracted one will have the same errors if you do not edit/patch it. BTW you can save profiles in any Gigabyte board I have seen/used in the last few years this can save you time having to do it all over again on reset just load saved profile and save and exit and you should be good to go. DSDT.aml goes into the /Extra folder for Chameleon same spot for smbios.plist as well..

OK, I got the file as you suggested. Unfortunatly I tried pasting in my org.chameleon.Boot.plist from my working 10.6.8. reasoning that it might fix the boot hanging at the dark screen (no video at end of boot - after grey screen and normal spinner). Not sure that was the best idea as now even with that new DSDT file in place it errors immediatly on boot and says "Cant Find - Press any key" whech kicks it back out of boot to Mavericks drive.

Below is my current Mavericks PLIST. Can you suggest a way to delete or add the proper text strings to make this boot again?

Try this and the PcIRoot may not be needed as well, not sure on the npci I have not installed with that family of chips remove the -v if you do not want a text boot after you get it going.

Wow, thanks very much. I am ALMOST ... there,

  • I now have sound (tested mp3 and movies)
  • I have internet
  • Your tweak to the PLIST worked, thanks!

Not working yet ...

  1. Rebooting is not killing the bios - HOWEVER
  2. Rebooting hangs after going to a dark screen. I have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to get the beep, to restart it.
  3. App Store still does not recognize this computer. ""Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance.""

In case it helps, this is my SMBIOS.PLIST:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">

    <string>MacPro5,1</string>
    <key>SMserial</key>
    <string>CK306565EUH</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Almost time to start migrating files HOORAY!

(Almost)

Thanks

Already mentioned evoreboot.kext will get it rebooting as the name suggests no clue on app store although now I am thinking about it I seem to remember something about the nvram dynlib having somthing to do with that, plus you need AppleID registered with Apple with a credit card associated with it I believe.

THanks, I will search out that KEXT, evoreboot.kext. Yes, I know about the App store, I can get on with my Macbook Pro and my iPHone, same password. IT is just not recognizign this hack build. I remember someone posting a sollution too ,,, wil have to dig a bit and see what I Can find.

WIll update when I know.

Tried this idea on a youtube tutorial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niU8tsQ_S8o

Found that putting in the string as outlined in the video in the Chameleon PLIST gives me the dead (black) screen at the end of booting. I tried moving the Key/string to the top and put it where I Show it below. No difference.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com...yList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
   <key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>Kernel</key>
    <string>mach_kernel</string>
    <key>Legacy Logo</key>
    <string>Yes</string>

    <key>device-properties</key>
    <string>4b00000001000000010000003f0000000100000002010c00d041030a0100000001010600041c0101060000007fff0400160000006200750069006c0074002d0069006e0000000500000001</string>

<key>PciRoot</key>
    <string>1</string>
    <key>SystemType</key>
    <string>1</string>
    <key>Timeout</key>
    <string>5</string>
</dict>
</plist>

EvoReboot was installed with KEXT Utility. Has not changed anything. Mavericks still hangs at reboot on a dead/black screen. Power the machine on and off continues the reboot and the machines beep. Otherwise it just hangs with dark screen.

Will try again tomorrow, pretty tired now.

Thanks

Used that once upon a time myself the old gfxutil to set your display the PCIroot is definitely not needed when doing that it is encoded in the device-properties if you change slots or cards your screwed, so just what about the GraphicsEnabler do you find is not working?

Well ... here we sit. I have tried and tried and tried again. This code works IF I remove the device-properties string. I Have tried moving the string to the top, bottom, and different places thinking it might be an order problem. When I remove the properties string it boots just fine.

What I get is a warning that the script has to pause for 5 seconds due to an error. Then it continues to where it should come to the login screen, but instead it is now a black screen. I get this no matter where I Put that line of code.

The remaining problems with this build remain constant, unfortunately.

  1. No access to Apple services though the App Store and I suspect the iCloud as well
  2. No rebooting even with evoreboot.kext.

Access to the App store is critical as is iCloud. No reboot without a manual over ride is pretty annoying but not a deal breaker - at first anyway.

OK, but it is already running as best I can get it. I am now migrating files and reestablishing my licenses on Mavericks.

I can not access apps in the APP Store with this build yet so I cannot get Onenote. I cannot yet sync my to do list, very important for me.

I also cannot access iCloud to sync my calender as it relies on the same appleID/identified authorized computer schema.

The graphs strings I put in are from EFIStudio which lists my card specifically. It hasn't hurt anything and seems not relevant to this machine going to a black screen on end of boot process. I put it in in case it was needed to stabilize the black screen problem but again, it seems to make no difference either way?

Obviously its a graphics enabler type problem and yet it seems to be when I add that one long string which several hits on Google suggested would work, it kills the graphics enabler completely no matter what order it appears in the PLIST.

I am not sure what to do next?

The other suggestions offered are to kill my ethernet presences, trash my network presences file and reboot. I am nervous to try this as I wanted to get the black screen thing figured out before I Tackled yet another unknown variable.

I am open to fresh ideas if you have any?

Thanks.

Well I have never re-installed from scratch since I first started using OS X in 2008 (looking at my ~/Public folder Mar. 26 2008 to be exact for the date of install for this install I am still using) I always clone my drive then put the necessary files on it to boot then once booted on new machine clone to its HD install boot loader on it, I would suggest similar for you could solve your login problems, carbon copy cloner is good for this. You need to go into System Preferences -> Sharing and rename the computer otherwise you end up with two machines using the same name on the network warning/problem. You still do not seem to be getting the graphics idea it is one or the other you need to stick with not both active at the same time.

No I must not have understood something you suggested? Below, text in blue is what you put in your example, this does boot without a problem, no black screen.

Text in red I put in to make sure it was not a video card problem, it also will not cause the black screen problem.

What is causing the black screen problem is when I try to put in that long hex string which is supposed to be about setting the network enabler to true so App store would recognize my machine.

Well ... I have gone back to your earlier posted suggestion, nothing else. I also killed the PCI as you thought it might have been unnecessary, apparently so because it boots fine with this PLIST code.

Unfortunately, I still cannot use the app store and I really must solve this. I did try doing all the other suggestions had said including deleting system preferences, networks (Firewire, WLAN), then deleting the network preferences, rebooting, adding a new WLAN setting ... nothing.

VERIFIED: Weird but, I can boot in my normal 10.6.8 drive and access the app store - that was how I first downloaded Mavericks. (Yes, just verified this, I can still access the app store and download apps from this hackintosh form my old main 10.6.8 drive.)

OBSERVATION: Ethernet is not an option in creating a new device in Mavericks, but it is an option in creating a new device in SNL. This is a part of many suggestions about getting the app store to recognize my device, that there must be Ethernet in the system network preferences for the app store to work. I know this is in th ePLIST, but it is not an option in system preferences and some say it should be. Thoughts?

I also cannot solve the incomplete reboot.

As to your earlier comment, I agree, this seems way to complex to hand migrate an entire drive. I won't get into all the details but, one reason I am doing this is to reorganize years of poor back ups and duped folders of duped folders. Hand cleaning while a pain is sometimes really all you can do. And, I have been struggling wit this upgrade for a VERY, long time. I live in fear I won't get back into my system (its happened a few times already) so I wanted to feel 100% certain that I could boot reliably to a Mavericks installed drive, BEFORE I tried doing that to my old drive. I am not 100% stable with this boot yet.

Thanks for your patience.
