Upgrade my PC for OS X: Need advice

Hello hackintosh community,

I am 16 years old and a IT student on a higher technical collage in Austria. This August I do a practicum and I want to invest the wage into a upgrade of my pc. Today it consist of the following parts:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955

MB: ASUS M4N68T-M-LE-V2

4 GB RAM

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6850

HDD: WDC WD50 00AAKS-08V0A   500GB [x]

SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB [x]

LG CD/DVD drive [x]

Power Supply: XILENCE XP600 [x]

Case [x]

I want to keep the parts marked with [x] if possible.

I have got a budget of ~550€. I want to install Windows 7 on the SSD for Flight Simulation (X-Plane, I know it also works in OS X...), bus simulation and other standard stuff. OS X should run on a small partition (how large is the plain os x install incl some standard stuff approximatelly?) on the ssd and a data partition on the HDD for video, audio and graphics manipulation, iTunes and maybe a bit of Apple software developing.

I have searched the web and especially your hcl-lists and the recommondations here. So I have chosen the following parts for my new pc:

CPU: Intel i5 4690K

MB: Gigabyte Z87-D3HP

Do you recommend me these parts? I want to overclock the i5 to 4-4.2GHz with a "Alpenföhn Brocken" fan. Would that be stabil for os x or on high load for a few hours?

For Flight Simulations and video editing I want to have 16 GB RAM. There are many products on the market now and I don't know wich one to take. What do you recommend?

I found the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 760 OC and the Gigabyte GV-N660OC-2GD NVIDIA GTX 660 GPUs on the web. What fits better to me and my system? Is the 760 really that better to spend 100€ more than on the 660? Am I able to drive 2 (or 3) displays with those cards on OS X or on Windows?

For installation I have got a OS X 10.6.3 DVD and I want to install from the DVD and upgrade up to the latest OS X. I have read that this is free, isn't it? Would that work on this system?

Please share your expiriences with me. I am thankful for any advice you can give me. If you need any futher information just ask me! Thanks in advance!

Cheers

You did the right thing choosing Intel. AMD is not fully supported under OSX and need workarounds, such as a patched kernel. These workarounds kill some of the best OSX features, such as the ability to log in to iCloud, iMessage and FaceTime. Both the CPU and motherboard will do fine, but if you plan to use the integrated graphics, make sure your monitor have a DVI or HDMI port, since VGA won't work, no matter what you do. Good luck!

All the best!
