So right now I have a 500gb HDD that is pretty slow compared to my Windows 128GB samsung ssd. Id like it to be as fast on this side too.  Ive seen people get software and a USB to Sata3 or sata 6 connector i believe and they can transfer the data on the drive to the new Ssd. like a Clone I guess? Before I do this and go out and buy a ssd to test this , First off will it work?  if not I guess I can just keep this original hard drive with osx on it. thanks for any advice.

Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper will work well for this you just need to install your boot loader on the cloned drive and it should just work. Also if you have recovery partition you can boot from on your existing drive Disk Utility's Restore option will do the same cloning when run booted from it.
