Thinkpad X201 getting pretty warm (Thinkpad Fan Control/Speedstep Control?)

Hi,

i finally got an X201 over my X200s (i just couldn't get the MHD4500X to work), swapped the nice X200s WXGA+ Screen over to the X201 and made a MyHack. Install worked okay-ish.

Specs:

i5-520M, Intel HD Graphics, 60 GB SSD, 1440x900 Screen. Fresh thermal paste, clean and dust free.

With Windows 7/8.1 the Fan isn't even on most of the time. The CPU Temp is barely cracking 50°C while just surfing the Web, with getting up to about 55°C. Then the Fan kicks in on a very low speed until it's down to 50ish°C.

With OSX 10.9.3 the Fan is running all the time, but on a very constant speed (from the noise, i would say about 2500-3500 rpm, so about 45-50%, max. RPM is 6900). The CPU Temp is hovering about 55-60°C all the time.

SpeedStep seems to be working, because HWMonitor shows it clocking down to 1.2 GHz. But since 1.2 GHz are enough for light surfing without any "effects" and some text writing...i would love to "pin" the CPU to 1.2 GHz...

So bottom line is: Is it possible to control the Fan and/or clocks? It looks like that the Governor is clocking up pretty fast. CPUThrottler doesn't work with my installation - and i have no idea where to start.

So maybe someone can give me some tips^^

Hello!

I think, that PM is not working.

Look in the MyHack.kext. I think, that there in is living some unnecessary garbage. It is not a good idea to install OSX with a kind of distro like Myhack and other ones in these days. It is better to go the vanilla way.

A good point to start with an vanilla install is this one: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/280756-guide-the-all-in-one-guide-to-vanilla-os-x-including-chameleon-dsdt-for-beginners-updated-for-mavericks/

You could use this tool to create an installer: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/files/category/9-pandora/

You could also try  to find with the forum search an install on a device with to yours similar hardware to get some more hints.

Have fun.

Hi,

thanks for the Answer. Yes, PM is only working partially.

Vanilla is not working (tried that a few ways), i've done the Installation after this guide: http://forum.osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/2833-install-osx-on-lenovo-thinkpad-x201s-and-maybe-x201/

I do not have working Backlight Control. Unfortunately no one answers my thread in osxlatitude and i did not find anything regarding the Power Issues...

Also the battery is only lasting about 1 Hour with OSX...the same battery (about 5400 mAh left of 6300 mAh) is lasting over 4 Hours with Linux and Windows. It seems to me, that the Powermanagement (which is btw Vanilla) is not lowering the Voltages acording to the Frequency...same goes with the iGPU, it looks like it's running at 3D-Clocks all the time...(i do have working QE/CI)

Hello!

Try to find a working device, even of an other brand, to get an idea, how your powermanagement could made working. Here on the platform exits a thread, if I am correct, about getting brigthness change working on your used hardware platform. Look in S/L/E, if there is something living named with nullcpupowermanagement. kext. You should also have a look in your Extra folder, If there is an Extension/Kextsore folder or an Extensions.mkext file. Install the necessary kexts in S/L/E and remove them from Extra folder. Beginning with OSX 10.8 there should be no more kexts in Extra....

I think, that you have to create an own correct patched DSDT.aml, to get most of the not working things correct recognized and working,

Have fun.
