looking for a inexpensive dual-1366 socket mainboard

Aloha community,

 

since you get full servers with 2 quadcore or even sixcore Xeons and 18gb+ DDR3 Ram pretty cheap used these days and the performancegain from an 5 year old Xeon quad to the latest i7 quadcores is far not worth to high prices my next computer will be a dual-Xeon 8 or 12 Core Hackintosh.

 

since i want to use it also for gaming, the motherboard needs to offer at least one PCIe x16 2.0 slot.

 

i did some research and these motherboards would fit my needs:

 

Intel S5520HC

Asus Z8NR-D12

Asus Z8NA-D6

Supermicro X8DAL-i

Supermicro X8DTL-iF

 

Are there any other boards in about the same pricage? (~200€)

 

when it comes to overclocking there are just the EVGA SR-2

 

where to find those?

 

 

which of those would be best for hackintoshing?

I have a Supermicro X8DTi-F with 2 Xeon X5675's, 24GB PC3-10600 Reg ECC and a EVGA GTX650Ti running 10.9.4 with a few problems ; 

 

Intel 82576 Gb lan controller not working, even with hnak's AppleIGB.kext so I'm using aTP-Link TL-WDN4800 Wireless-N900 Dual Band PCI-Express Adapter which works OOB and gives Airport functionality.
 

No onboard sound on this board so I'm using a cheap USB audio adapter, which also works OOB.

 

I have a X8DAL-3 coming in the next few days that I'm going to move everything to.

 

No overclocking, but Speedstep does work.   Even though the BIOS has Turbo Boost enabled, I can't see that it's working.

 

GB3 score is around 21000 for 64 bit.   Same processors in a real Mac Pro come in at 28000, so not having Turbo is definitely hurting.

 

There's a patched DSDT around somewhere for the X8DAL-i that I'm going to try when the new mobo get here.

Can you post the specs of that USB audio adapter?

 

Re: Turbo boost, did you ever try to make your SSDT table for that? RampageDev has a complete guide on his blog and it works.

I'll ignore the childish posts above (I wish I could treat my end users that way, but I like my 6 figure income too much).

 

pikes script doesn't handle the Westmere EP Xeons so I can't use it to generate an SSDT, but I did some tweaking on the BIOS settings and got my GB3 scores up. Disabling the pre-fetch and C state limiting brought my 64 bit score up to 26400.

 

My X8DAL-3 should arrive today, so we'll see how everything works with that board.

 

The X8DTi-F will get two 5520's and become a Linux file server since it doesn't have audio and the 82576 NIC doesn't work under OS X.

 

The X8DAL-3 has ALC883 audio and 82574L NICs, plus 8 SAS ports. I should be able to get the audio working, from what I've read and AppleIntele1000.kext handles the 82574 chip.

Apparently did not try hard enough you quote/reply to the post then take the opportunity to brag about your supposedly high income.. If you had bothered to look into the RampageDev you would have found it requires actual work to get it going you manually extract the SSDT tables from the BIOS then apply your patches/edits to get it working. Now on that e1000 driver if my experience with it is any indication then you will be alright to surf the web most times but if you plan on transferring any amout of files on your network then good luck, it is buggy as hell and drops the connection on a regular basis when doing that. I went with add in pci-e card that uses the RTL8111 driver from Meize available on here for my Haswell machine it works great. I reguarly see 100MB/s using it which is close enough to the 125 theoretical limit for a gigabit network I should get. For sound I have since Leporad used a FireWave which outputs perfectly working 5.1 surround sound during all them OS upgades in that time. This of course requires add in firewire card in my Haswell machine but for under $200 all in it gives me no hassel working solutions, you could have done the same with your original board for less than the new motherboard.

I'll always give back a little to those who give when it's not called for.  Just because someone knows less than you doesn't mean they are less than you.  I've forgotten more about some things than a lot of people will ever know, but when someone asks for help, I'm always willing to give it without being mean or condescending to them.

 

The main reason I got the new MB (which wasn't that expensive), is that the X8DAL-3 is ATX and the X8DTi-F is E-ATX.   I'm working on modding a G5 case for this system and with a 950 watt PSU  sitting where the old HDD cage sits and the E-ATX MB, there won't be much room for HD's and fans, even with the G5 PSU removed..   The smaller ATX MB gives me room in the front of the case to mount a HD rack for several 3.5 and 2.5 HDD's, as well as some 120mm or 140mm case fans.

 

If the e1000 proves inadequate, I've got some Airport cards I can install for the time being.   If the ALC883 proves troublesome, I'll stick with a USB solution, since I don't see any reason to get into Firewire when Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 are the future.  Sound isn't all that important to me, anyway.
