mmx
Hello, im new here, and i just bought from ebay a macbook mid 2010, and it seems to be broken. my problems/questions 1. Cannot enter boot menu by holding "option" key, or "c" key 2. Because of 1, i try reset PRAM hold "cmd" "option" "P" "R" -> doesnt work 3. Try to reset by removing battery and hold for 10 seconds "power button" -> doesnt work 4. Non of the combination from here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1533 work Its like the keyboard is dead, but A. Insert a usb stick with ubuntu -> it boots, and works ok, keyboard, all keys works ok, trackpad works ok. B. Insert the same usb as in step A , and a windows install dvd , and while pressing "option" key, i was able to boot windows installation,(i was not prompted with boot menu, just direct boot of windows dvd), after i install windows, i downloaded and install bootcamp, it installed all drivers, but keyboard caps lock key remain stuck(in software) after first press, and cannot unstuck it just after i log out. If i press "ctrl" keyboard is not working until i log out.( with windows 7 32bit and 64 bit) C. Insert the same usb as in step A , and a OSX install dvd and while pressing "option" key it stucks at black screen and cannot do anything just turn off. Can anyone gine me some hints what could i do? Thanks!
theconnactic
If it works with both Ubuntu and Windows installers, it isn't broken. By the symptoms, something very odd is happening: perhaps both your installed system and installation media are corrupt (very unlikely, but)? Or perhaps you're trying to install a system that is too new for your machine (since it's a 2010 MacBook, depending on the model, it has 32-bit EFI and will only accept Snow Leopard or older)? mmx
I had tryed with snowlepard, from usb and boot from iBoot3.3 and i get kernel panic and bump. I want to try rewrite the bios chip with new bios i found on the net, maybe that will fix it. I will post the result when/if i get any )
Dr. Hurt
OK, 2 suggestions: 1- Remove CMOS battery (A bit complicated) 2- Get a clean/vanilla Snow Leopard "DVD", and try to boot from it.
PookyMacMan
Something else: if the HDD doesn't have a system on it and you don't have any other drives plugged in, the boot menu won't show up with the Option key. It will only work if there is a bootable system somewhere. The only key combination that should work without any OS on the machine is the T key for target disk mode. Have you tried that?
mmx
@Dr. Hurt CMOS battery, does it have any? Where is it located? @PookyMacMan I had installed linux on it, windows to, but still boot option keys, or any other key combination before any OS start does not work. Update. I had just desolderd Bios chip, and rewrite it in a eprom programmer with some dump i found on net, but it does not start, i write back original file and it starts and works as before. I will keep looking for bios dumps, so i can direct write to eprom, maybe that will solve the problem. With external USB keyboard it works ok, in windows or linux. I was suggested to resolder SMC chip. I think that will be the next step.
mmx
OK guys update. 1. Updated bios then i was able to boot and install OSX, after that i updated SMC and EFI to the latest versions. Still on system boot non of the keyboard functions work 2. Try to install with bootcamp assistant windows and it got "broken" as the state from post 1. In windows when i press any key i got this icon on screen, what can it be from, maybe thats the whole problem of this laptop. Anyone has any idea about this icon? That is the DVD eject icon. It normally appears when the F12 button is pressed and held for a few seconds. (On OS X at least, not sure if the boot camp drivers add this to Windows too). Perhaps there's something wrong with the keyboard. Try detaching the built in keyboard and use an external USB keyboard.
