heerbijs
Hey there! I was trying to install Mavericks on my new pc, everything goes smooth until I'm in the installation, it does not show the hard drive I'm trying to install it to in Disk Utility. The only thing it is showing is the Installation USB. I have tried several things: 1. Setting bios SATA controller to AHCI mode; 2. Using other SATA ports for the hard drive; 3. Using several kexts that I found online; 4. Pre-partitioning and formatting the drive before installation; I'm getting quite desperate here, none of this seems to be working. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? My specs: GIGABYTE Z77P-D3 rev1.1 mobo Intel i7 3770k cpu AMD Radeon 6850 2gb WD Blue 1.0TB hard drive Thank you so much in advance. heerbijs
Hey! Bumping an old thread of mine. After a few months I decided to give it another shot. I did read somewhere that there could be a problem that the 1Tb drive it too big for some reason, I swapped it with a 250gb sata drive and hooked up via external USB case. I managed to install it and everything works good as long as the drive is hooked up via the USB, when I connect it via the sata connection, it stops at the "still waiting for the root device" Does anybody have has an idea what could be wrong? How could I fix that? Thank you in advance.
aww
did a google check on GIGABYTE Z77P-D3 rev1.1 mobo It's BIOS is UEFI. first thing todo, goto BIOS (disable secure boot) Secure Boot means: non EFI compatible Hard drive will not be allowed to boot. Second thing, Enable CMS/CSM mode to always (legacy mode bios enabled) Also, with Secure Boot enabled and CMS/CSM set to never, any old Video Card will not function on your PC. It Require UEFI compatible Graphic Card to boot.

aww
If you are using Clover (chameleon has problem with UEFI pc), Use UEFI settings, (ie check first 2 items, no MBR installation).
crusher
If you are using Clover (chameleon has problem with UEFI pc), Use UEFI settings, (ie check first 2 items, no MBR installation). Why.I dont't have problem via Chameleon, but and I use Clover. But work on Chameleon.
aww
depend on Version of Chameleon (it update a lot in the last four weeks). Two months ago, test chameleon on ATC-605, the version at the time did not work. A year ago, Chameleon USB will not boot on Gateway Laptop, most recent chameleon will allow USB installation on My Laptop. So, again depend on Version. aww
For comparison, MB GA-43 using Clover 2774, take more than 2 minutes to boot to desktop, Chameleon take 34 to 40 seconds only. test Clover 2795, talk 24-27 seconds to boot to desktop. Did not test most recent Chameleon.
heerbijs
Whoa, thank you for your quick responses! I went into my bios settings and did not notice any previously mentioned "secure boot" option. There was only one security option where I could select between "OS" and "Setup" options. All the boot options was selected as both UEFI and Legacy mode. Currently I'm using Chameleon v2.2svn r2378. I'll try out the Clover tomorrow, hopefully it will work. It's 3am now The picture of my verbose boot can be seen here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1polz98pghw4wpu/2014-08-14%2002.47.48.jpg Yeah, I know that there is a kernel backtrace there, but I'm sure that is not the problem because: 1. It boots normally on USB with this backtrace; 2. This is my second installation today, I already fixed it previous time (today) by applying ACPI backroll kext and the problem still did persist. It was getting late, left it for tomorrow fix list In fact I'm writing this post now from Mavericks which I booted with these settings (without -x safe mode): http://grab.by/zs2i ( maybe there's something here missing? ) Again, thank you guys for the help! EDIT: Okay, I couldn't go to sleep without knowing if this will work or not. I installed the Clover, tried booting on both sata cable and usb, both stopped me on "boot1: error" https://www.dropbox.com/s/2v9rpzljj9im9mf/2014-08-14%2003.29.17.jpg Had to boot back using my installation usb. aww
if you don't see secure boot, that means you have only one option, Somewhere on your Bios: you will see UEFI and Legacy switch. That means, you have to be totally Legacy or UEFI. On my Acer ATC-605, when disable Secure Boot, will see the DVDrom apear twice on the Boot List (F12) once with UEFI prefix, second entry same DVDrom on UEFI prefix. If my dvd is windows 7 legacy, when i try to boot with entry with UEFI-dvdrom, result in error. if my dvd is windows 8.1 UEFI when i try to boot with entry withoit UEFI, i will get error message. If you decide to dual boot with win8.1 (then Bios setting should UEFI), USB installer's loader has to Clover with UEFI settings, loader on internal Hard drive must also be Clover with UEFI setting, if you decide to dual boot with win7 but still want UEFI setting, you need to us RuFus,exe to create a win7 usb installer for you. If you decide to stay with legcay mode, Every hard drive must be MBR settings, (even when using Clover, chameleon is installed in MBR setting) That means, you can use either chameleon loader or Clover loader. Then win8.1 may problem, installing. when i say MBR setting, does NOt mean MBR partition, osx has to be installed with GUID partition. MBR setting means, one of the boot file is in the main partition. In Clover case , EFI folder will be created on root. (not hidden in EFI partition) there is an option to put EFI on ESP (don't select it ,it will be your EFI folder to the hidden EFI partition) if your hard drive is larger than 1T (2T or 3T), when using older chameleon loader, you will see error Boot1: error. Use a more current chameleon Loader, it will boot normally. (at lease r2391). if you are using chameleon, the BIOS should be LEGACY mode. Clover 2774-2795 had difff problems with differenct pc,, 2795 test ok and good speed. try new clover loader or newer chameleon.
heerbijs
Hey! I installed the Clover rev 2795 on the latest version and set up the MBR setting as well as set everything on by bios to legacy mode. The bootloader now loads fine, but the same problem still persists. When I'm using my sata cable it's waiting on the root device, when I'm using external USB drive everything works fine. The problem with the large drives shoudn't be a problem, since I'm using 250gb sata drive for my Mavericks installation. The 1Tb drive I have disconnected because I have installed windows 7 on it and there are some things I wouldn't want to lose. ( I have a bad habit of messing something up while installing new OS'es, so I decided to disconnect this drive physically while I'm messing around with this. ) I assume that the windows 7 is running on legacy mode, that's why I went with it. I'm starting to wondering, could this issue be related to my sata controller itself? Maybe there's a kext I need to install to make this work? Most likely I'm doing something simply dumb and the answer has been in front of me all along
aww
root device hang, may be hd or graphic port detection hang, on my legacy GA-EP43 and AMD GA-785M, both have similar problem, when upgrade from 10.8 to 10.9 it fixed by add npci=0x2000 on boot flags, (it just a guess) what version of FakeSmc you are using? (just one without plugins, this plugin are for seniors ) where do you put in, in /EFI/Clover/Kexts/10.9 or SLE? Try not adding any other kexts, (mini is fakesmc, or fakesmc plus nullcpu power only) and only install it on /EFI/Clover not in SLE. if you can boot with usb drive, have graphics, then npci is not the problem. Then boot and run with USB hard drive, goto console diskutil list see whether, the 250G internal HD is no the list see if EFI partition on 250G is there, take note to remember /dev/disk?s? for the 250G HD mkdir /Volumes/EFI sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk?s? /volumes/EFI using FINDER to example EFI partion, should have nothing in there. if there EFI of clover folder was there, mean clover was install in EFI setting? Clover cannot change for EFI setting to MBR by just re-installing, need to re-partition and reinit the 250G HD and reinstall install OSX on it with MBR setting. aww
if diskutil list, show your 250G, means kext loads just find. if you don't see 250G hd, then your are right, about Sata is the problem. Your boot screen, shows how chameleon start loading, Not Clover loading sequence???
heerbijs
My FakeSMC is located in /S/L/E with version: http://grab.by/zC8S Diskutil is returning http://grab.by/zC94 and the /EFI directory in finder looks like this: http://grab.by/zC9u As I understand, I'll have to reinstall the OSX with the MBR setting right? How do I do that? I suppose there is no MBR setting in installation itself.
aww
Your FAKESMC much newer than mine, i found out you do'nt need one, My FAKESMC version (used on all my PCs) 5.3.820 2013 netkas (get this from finder get-info) Your Disk list did show your 250G HD, so Sata has nothing to do with your problem, If Clover were installed in EFI setting, you will not see EFI folder on the root (/) if Clover were installed in MBR setting, you will see EFI folder on root, but not in /dev/disk0s1 some PC when set to legacy mode, may still not allow MBR hard drive to boot. if it does allow it to boot, then it should appear on then f12 Boot list. (Verifly it in fact, allowed to boot) i will try to down load the manual for GIGABYTE Z77P-D3 rev1.1 mobo and try to find out, csm/cms and Secure boot options are there. To Re Install OSX, disk utility, partition, change number to 1 (cannot just erase) and option (to be sure is set at GUID) Then apply setting to create partition and erase old drive. Page 44 on the Eng Manual, item to do with boot option, not very clear, should ask your MB vendor, about it.
