Could not modify partition map!

So I have a HP DM4-3099se and I want to dual boot Mavericks and Windows on it. I have a bootable copy of Niresh Mavericks on my flash drive but when I go to erase the partition I made for OSX, it will not let me. It says that there was an error and it could not modify partition map. Please help. One guy in the chat told me that I needed to format my drive as a GUID but this other guy who is more reputable on this website(RehabMan) told me that Niresh works on non-GUID hard drives also. Please help as I do not know what to do now!

P.S: I already have Windows installed.

I have the same problem with my system - envy 4-1117nr - UEFI. Did you shrink a partition for your Mavericks from Windows? If you did, the UEFI doesn't let you to do it. The only way I could do mine is to format the drive to MBR, re-install windows 8.1 from the EFI and NOT UEFI option. Then I could shrink a partition from Windows and format it to MacOSX Mavericks at installation. There's also one more thing you can do is to install Mavericks to external USB drive, install it to 2 partitions in USB drive. One to boot into, and the other to restore into the internal hard drive partition. Try this to see if it works.

Before formatting the hard drive, make sure you make a recovery disk backing up all partitions: UEFI, boot, windows. Get a software to extract product # from the original windows for registration when you install the new windows 8 or 8.1. If later down the line, you want to use UEFI again, then just restore the recovery.

I don't like UEFI, I use MBR, with chameleon, I can triple boot anything I want and it's more reliable and easy to use. I don't really need all these OEM software installed on my computer anyway. After Mavericks is installed, I seldom use Windows 8.1, just MAC and Ubuntu. I only use Windows for MovieMaker, but when I can use iMovie, I don't use it either.

Cheers,

Louis

I dont really want to have Ubuntu and don't want to triple boot. I just want a dual boot system. I guess I won't be able to dual boot without formatting my drive in another format so I guess I am just going to have to do that. I really did not want to have Windows erased but what can you do. So since I do not want to triple boot, can I just format as GUID? I want to have Windows 8 and Mavericks.

It doesn't matter if triple or dual boot, it's the same topology. Chameleon doesn't work with UEFI only on MBR, only Clover works on UEFI and it's a pain the get it working. If you use GUID, you have to use EasyBCD to dual boot from windows environment. In order to dual boot, you have to configure a boot loader that can boot from both Windows and Mac. Either way, load Mavericks on external USB drive and make sure it works before diving into the internal hard drive. It's just safer.

Ok so Mavericks installer works fine, its just that when I actually go to install it gives me the error saying it could not modify partition maps. So If I just continue using an MBR, will it work. I am going to try again in a few minutes. Here is a picture of my partitions on my hard drive. Can you please tell me if you find anything wrong in it that I need to change to get it to work. I still want to dual boot windows and mavericks

you want install MAC OS X in NTFS ?

you are the beast !!! :P

First Format in FAT32 in Win or with your toll, then boot  with the installer, open Disk Utility  and Format in HFS+

note that Maverick not install in MBR, you need a Patch MBR to your USBinstaller, google it, or section downloads

Somebody else told me that you can boot mavericks in MBR if you have Niresh because it automatically does it for you.  So all I have to do is format the Mac OSX partition I have in Fat 32 mode and than when I go to erase the partition on disk utility, I just have to click on HFS+ mode instead of Mac OSX Journaled, right?

Mac OSX Journaled,  the first option

Ok so first I went to Partition Wizard and I formatted the MAC OSX partition as Fat32. It was successful. Than I booted into the Niresh Mavericks bootable USB that I have and I selected Disk Utility. I clicked on the MAC OSX partition and I than I clicked on the erase tab. When I clicked on the erased tab, I saw the option to select how I want to format it and also what I want to name it. NTFS was already selected but it was grayed out. I clicked on the little arrow and selected MAC OSX Journaled. Than I named it MAC OSX. Than I clicked erase. It started working but than after 2 seconds, it gave me the "Error, coudn't modify partition map" error. Please help. Here is a view of my Partition Wizard screen again.

Well, try with a boot cd Linux and use GPARTED to format it to HFS+

I am tired of this. Is there a way where I can just erased my whole drive and just reinstall Windows and than install OSX. I really do not want to do this unless I am for sure that it will work. Please reply fast. Thank you.
