Cannot boot without USB

Hi,

I was able to install mavericks on my Samsung RF511-s05ae and it's working but with a few problems...one of them which I want to fix is booting without usb.

My specs are as follows:

intel i7 2670qm 2.2ghz

6gb RAM DDR3

intel HD3000

 

I installed Chimera bootloader, a Chameleon stand alone, and I even tried clover, but still didn't boot without the usb... I'm sure there's something wrong but I don't know what it is and what to do. Please help, I've been stuck on this problem for weeks and I just want to boot without the USB (and preferably with a GUI on boot like Clover).

 

Any kind of helpful and complete information would definitely be appreciated.

maybe your hdd has a 4kb，so ，you must install chameleon or clover boot  manually。of course， UEFI bios except。

What 4kb? Is that a hidden partition or something? I'm dual booting a Windows 7 with my OS X Mavericks, I also have a separate partition for my windows so I have 3 partitions in total: 1 Mac OS X (Journaled) for Mavericks, 1 NTFS for Windows 7, and another NTFS for storage.

If not, forgot about HDD with 4K problem...

Look, isn't just necessary install OSX and install bootloader... is necessary configure it...

I have a sandy bridge intel i7 2670QM, I followed the power management guide but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for me. I get "Permission denied" on patching the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement kext:
 

Just find and list ...

perl AICPMPatch.pl /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement

Then give patch in wrmsr to enable recording in Bios

sudo perl AICPMPatch.pl /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement --patch

 

 

 

I tried installing chameleon; still didn't work. I'm thinking of giving it up an just go for easyBCD, that looks quicker but less fancy for my liking...oh well.

Just find and list ...
sudo perl AICPMPatch.pl /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement

Okay, I'll try that when Time machine is done restoring my backup... By the way, I have a DSDT on my installer USB Disk's /Extra Folder, can I copy that to my hard drive? (in /Extra folder?)

I generated that DSDT and it has no errors but has 2 warnings (CRS i think).

 

Also, which should I be doing first? Is it Chameleon Install then fix Power Management? or Fix Power Management then Chameleon Install?

 

Last time that I did try to fix power management, I got a "wrmsr found 0" and "wrmsr ignored: 0", does that mean I successfully patched AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext?

I tried again, what I did was:

 

-Install chameleon (manually)

-Make SSDT file and get DSDT file, put them in /Extra folder

-Fix Power Management

 

I still can't get it to work, the process actually killed my Windows 7 (couldn't boot to my Win7, recovered it via DISKPART and setting my Win7 artition as ACTIVE in command line).

 

I tried it again with Chameleon Installer, it didn't kill my Win7 but it's still the same: can't boot without USB.

 

Please help :(

I even updated my Laptop's BIOS, I'm dual booting OSX Mavericks and Windows 7 in a Samsung RF511 laptop by the way.

 

is there anything that I'm doing wrong?

Hello

 

Disable UEFI mode in Bios… Chameleon only work in legacy_boot mode…

Do I have to customize the Chameleon Install?

 

I tried turning off UEFI support in bios and tried installing Chameleon and then Patch Power Management, still didn't work, although I have battery Status showing up now unlike before.

 

Here's a screenshot of my BIOS, maybe there's something that I need to change here or something...

Also another question.. Do the order of Install be a cause of the boot problem?

 

I formatted my hard drive as GUID and then installed OS X Mavericks on the 2nd partition, and then I installed windows 7 on the 3rd (where in the 1st Partition is a hidden partition).

Nothing for change...

 

OSX need be in 1st partition....

I tried reinstalling both my windows and os x again, here's what I did:

 

- Format hard disk to GUID using OS X Installer USB with 3 partitions (OS X, WINDOWS, ExFAT for FILESHARE)

- Installed Windows 7 64bit and Laptop Drivers

- Installed OS X

- Installed M u l ti Be ast using this setup:

  > UserDSDT or DSDT-Free Installation

  > Drivers & Bootloaders -> Drivers -> System -> Patched AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement (be sure to select the version appropriate for the version of OS X you have installed)

  > Customization -> System Definitions -> MacBookPro8,1"

- Installed Chameleon using your guide

- Patched Power Management using your guide

 

all of that...still didn't work >< 

 

is it safe to just use a NullCPUManagement Kext together with the patched Power Management?

 

Also, do boot flags like "-f" (Ignore System Cache?) affect booting with chameleon?

 

I know this thread has taken a lot of days just replying to me, and I really appreciate the help and directions you've given, I hope you wouldn't get tired of helping me out until I get it right.

look, you doing wrong things...

 

First, We don't give support for tonymac's tools, Multibeas**t, Unibe**ast... whatever... we don't give support...

 

Second, that guide don't include tonymac tools... in others words, you don't need these tools...

 

You need do to install OSX+Win in legacy_boot:

 

3 partitions in format GUID:

*1st - OSX - Mac OSX Journaled

*2nd - Win - MS-DOS FAT

*3rd - Files - You know what format you want put...

 

After install OSX first, then, install Win

 

After that, install Chameleon, like that guide i gave to you teach....

 

Fix power management after install Chameleon and configure it...

Oh okay, I'll try without tonymac's stuff then, I'm only following different guides and see which ones work. I know little about the installation process but I'm definitely learning now.

I'll get back to you when I finish following your guides. Thanks for pointing me to the proper direction

I've read the links in your signature, I didn't know I was using stolen code when I understood what he did... :surprised:

 

Okay, I was able to make a OS X Mavericks installer usb through this guide by rockinron_1 and was able to:

 

- Install mavericks *I did not re-format my HDD because it was GUID already and I have a windows7 installed in the other partition...

- Install Kexts (FakeSMC, NullCPUM, VoodooPS2Controller, )

- Copy the Extra folder from USB

- Install Chameleon pkg (standard install)

- Patch Power Management (generated SSDT file)

- Delete NullCPUM kext

- Disable CPU states and Enable Drop SSDT  in org.chameleon.plist (downloaded a theme for chameleon as well)

...but still, I can't boot without usb :(

I don't know if reformatting my entire HDD and re-partitioning them will work, but I'll probably try that tomorrow.

Download Binaries chameleon folder i386  from section downloads forum and put in your Desktop

open Terminal app

Look for your boot partition's identifier (diskXsY):

IE: disk0s2

 

diskutil list : IE: disk0s2

 

Get root access:

sudo su

 

cd /Users/your user/Desktop/i386 

 

Install boot0 to the MBR:

 

./fdisk440 -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdisk0

 

Install boot1h to the bootsector of the boot partition:

 

dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2

 

Copy the file "boot" to the partition:

 

cp boot /

 

reboot

 

 

if needed set partition active:

 

Set the partition active:

 

cd /Users/your user/Desktop/i386 

./fdisk440 -e /dev/rdisk0

 

p <-----> (print a list on screen)

f 2 <-----> (makes partition 2 active) see your Partition

w <-----> (write to disk)

y <-----> (yes)

reboot

I tried doing what you said, I still can't boot without the USB...

 

I see this message in the header now when I boot "header read size 200 incorrect image signature"

 

I've read in other forums that removing the disk physically and re-connecting it works for them, I might try that but I want to be sure if that helps or not, can you please confirm if that helps in some chameleon boot problems?

It appears the bootloader is not installing correctly to the HD. One method to solve this problem is to temporarily place the target HD in an external HD case, connect to a working Mac (Real or Hack) and install the bootloader to the target HD. The target HD can then be relocated to its normal place and the machine will boot as expected. This has worked for me on several different HDs.

 

If a separate working Mac is not available, but a spare HD and external case is, then proceed as follows: Clone the present Mac install to the spare HD (attached via the external case), install the desired bootloader to the spare then swap the HDs between computer and external case. The computer should now boot from the spare HD. Install the bootloader to the target HD (now located in external case). Replace the target HD into the computer and the machine should boot without requiring the USB.

I have a laptop so the external case will be connected via USB? I'll try that, I probably have to look (buy) for a spare for now..

 

I wonder if this will work:

 

I have a PC with VMWare, can I connect my target HD to VMWare and then install the bootloader from there to my target HD?

Update:

I tried using an HDD enclosure and what I have is a usb hdd enclosure (not sure if there is any other types of hdd enclosures out there)

I ran VMWare OS X ML and it was able to install chameleon to my target hdd but when I tried putting it back to my laptop, it still looked for a USB to boot...
 

I'm not sure if the way I formatted my hdd is the problem here...since I just format it via Disk Utility from the USB installer, and then make the partition from there..it formats the disk quickly...

Is there a more secure or thorough way of formatting a hard disk to a GUID partition? Or can I solve this entire booting problem in a different way?

Will your laptop boot from the target HD when it is installed in the external USB enclosure?  I ask because I worked on a laptop that would not boot from a GUID partitioned HD when installed in the laptop. I needed to partition MBR to get the machine to boot from the internal HD.  Mac OS will run from an MBR HD but it will not install without modifying the OS X installer. In my case I cloned an installed OS X to the MBR HD (the clone utility complained but did it's job when I insisted it do so) and then installed Chameleon to the HD.
