Mavericks randomly freezes at shut down or after few minutes at work

Hello,

I have an almost perfectly running Mavericks installation if it wasn't for the freezing issue.

Mavericks appears to freeze sometimes and randomly after a few seconds, a few minutes, when I shut down or not even at all. It also freezes at some point during a time machine backup.

I have no idea how to locate the error since I am not very familiar with the console and logs.

I have already installed and activated the freeze fix, but I had a few freezes since.

My built:

i5 3750k

H77-D3H Gigabyte

8 GB RAM

Nvidia GeForce GTX 460

128SSD

OSX 10.9.1

I'd be thankful for any suggestions and help.

Regards

I have the same problem,

I noticed that My SMBios.plist was gone from Extra folder. I created new in Chameleon Wizard.

I also replaced FakeSMC kext with that one from my previous Mountain Lion installation.

So far 30 minutes no freeze.

Let me know what you see when you click "About This Mac" and "More Info..."?

If your hack is properly recognised as Mac compatible with Mavericks than it must be new fakeSMC causing this.

That is if I won't have another freeze soon :)

No. His freeze is the "Fermi Freeze". It's well documented here, but there's no real solution for it. A 100% way to spot this is to look for OpenGL channel exceptions in system.log.

There's an app somewhere in one of the Fermi Freeze threads that keeps the video card busy constantly drawing colored polygons. You can set this as login item and run it hidden in the background, this will stop the freezing.

Another way is to have VLC loop a small video clip, but this means you can't use VLC for anything except watching videos (like playing FLAC rips).

Ok, so it must be mine old FakeSMC kext. I don't have any freezes anymore (2 hours now) We see tomorrow if that went away for good.

Thanks for the tip Gringo, I might need it if {censored} come back. I must add that I have HD5770 in native mac mode so I doubt that I had Fermi Freeze.

If you have a Fermi video card, then that's almost surely it. It's possible to go for hours or days without freezing.

I can't count the times I've seen a post like "Success!! the freezes are gone because I updated my fakesmc/smbios.plist/gpusensors/nvidia drivers/agpm.kext/darkwake flag" only to see the same user hours later "no, forget it, it froze on me again".
