Yep, you can do this.

If you just want to try it, the fastest way to do it is to download some distros (Niresh, iAtkos etc) but there is no higher version of OSX than 10.8.

 

If you want to do this for your work you need to be pacient and download Mavericks 10.9 from AppStore and make a bootable Installer. Then you can replace the kernel with the latest one from Sinetek (V2/V3) or another from Bronozvka and try it :)

 

EDIT: Just an example from some guy on youtube :) This is the older version of osx (Lion 10.7) but you can try it with newest (Mavericks 10.9)

Are you using USB to install? If so then when it freezes unplug the USB and wait a minute or so then re insert it. If your not using a USB when it hangs wait a minute or so then insert a USB drive and hopefully it should pass.
