Gigabyte GA-X79S-UP5 - Questions of a Newbie, would appreciate anyones time and patience !

I am trying to learn and read and understand in order to build a great machine ! Since discovering Insanely Mac my understanding of the processes and the community has leapt up, especially in relation to other sites.

I have tried to do as much research as I can, but am still a little unsure about a few decisions.

I am building a machine with the sole purpose of Motion graphics and video editing, Cinema4d - vray - autocad -FCP - after effects

So with this in mind I thought I would push the boat out and go for ....

Intel Xeon E5 2650 (8 core)
Gigabyte GA-X79S-UP5
32GB 1600Mhz DDR3
GeForce GTX 760
SATA 6Gb/s 240GB SSD

all this stuffed in the G5 case as best as I can ! (i hope to do this beautifully ....we will see!)

  • Now my first question is for my intended use - C4D etc, is this much better than going for say a

Intel Core i7-4770K
on a
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H

?

My understanding is that the Xeon chip will process better with 8 cores for the type of work that I am doing ?

However its clock speed is 2.0 with turbo boost of 2.8 ? is this still better than the I7 ? with its faster speed etc ?

  • My second question is really what does the lack of power management sleep and speedstep on the socket 2011 actually end up meaning for a user ?

At the moment as I understand it ....if the OS goes into sleep it won't wake from this mode ? but I am sure about the rest of power management and speedstep ?? I am being stupid but I haven't found an article or topic which covers this ! Could someone explain it to a simpleton like me please ?!

Thank you everyone and anyone for taking the time to read this, I would be really excited and interested on hearing people thoughts opinions and expertise, and also please do say if you think I am being to ambitious for a first time build.

I look forward to learning and discovering more and more as I go along, thanks for anyone pointing me in the right direction

Thank you in advance

Hey, I've got a similar setup to what you're attempting to build (minus the G5 case), I'll do my best to explain.

If you're rendering or editing video, (unless using CUDA or something) it's all about the CPU. A quad-core i7 may not cut it if you really want a powerful graphics machine. But at the same time, while Xeons can have more cores, they aren't overclockable and cost a lot, lot, lot more. They're meant for servers. With the E5 2650 at $1100 and the i7 4770 at only about $300, you've given yourself a pretty big price range to play with.

IMO Xeon is really only worth it for a graphics rig unless going dual CPU, which is again going to cost a lot more. If I were you, I'd probably go with either the 6-core i7 3930K (Sandy Bridge) or the 6-core i7 4930K (Ivy Bridge), which can very easily be overclocked to 4.2GHz (higher if desired) and run stable as all hell. Overclocked, either of these CPUs will probably give better performance than the Xeon for ~$500 less.

As for power management, 10.9 was a big step forward. Startup, shutdown and reboot all work fine. Sleep and wake now work fine with no additional kexts needed. Speedstep is present/ power management working for the most part. You may need to install NullCPU to get speedstep working correctly - other than that that's about it. So you shouldn't have too much to worry about really. Keep in mind though, I can only speak for the Sandy Bridge-E processors, the Ivy Bridge-E ones are still very new and may not be fully compatible yet (although I can't see a reason why they shouldn't be). You'll have to research that.
