Bansaku
Heyas Folks! So, Apple just released 10.9 DP6 today, and like all good testers ran it through the hoops. Everything looks good, but one thing that looks great are the benchmarks for OpenGL 4.1! Here are my results in both Windows 8.1 and OS X 10.9 DP6. Heaven was run 3 times each OS with a reboot in-between each. GA-Z77X-UD5H, i7 3770K (stock), 16GB 1866MHz, HIS Radeon 7950HD IceQ x2 Boost 3GB Heaven 4.0 Basic, Extreme preset OpenGL OS X 10.9 DP6: 29.3fps/737 Windows 8.1 13.8b2: 26/656
Maniac10
That sounds terrific, Ive been waiting for OSX to catch up to Windows' OpenGL performance wise since forever.
Graebags
Just upgraded to Preview 6 myself, so had to try it. In practice, playing Civilization 5 Brave New World at 1920 x 1080 resolution, Preview 5, was a great improvement over all previous attempts at playing it on OSX, and DP6 and 7 seem great too. Heaven 4.0 Basic, Extreme preset OpenGL OS X 10.9 DP6 (OpenGL): 26.9 fps / 679 Windows 8.1 (OpenGL): 26.9 fps / 676 Windows 8.1 (DirectX 11): 28.9 fps / 729 (DirectX 11 still rules, LOL. see note) And, having just upgraded to Preview 7 OS X 10.9 DP7 (OpenGL): 26.6 fps / 670 Note: I hadn't previously thought about this but it probably invalidates any direct comparison between the Mavericks and Win 8.1 results, (confesses) my Win 8.1 drive is a Liteon 256gb sata3 SSD, while OS X runs on an old Hitachi 1tb sata2 HDD. Some rainy day I'll switch Mavericks onto the SSD and make for a fair comparison. With Mavericks DP7 imaged to the SSD, results were: fps 26.6, Score
jeanlain
DirectX 11 still rules, LOL. By a very tiny margin... These are good results. I cannot compare with Windows, but my slow 9600M GT (macbook) does quite a bit better under mavericks than under ML in that test. Perhaps 15% better, and dp6 brought substantial improvements. startas
And mac still sucks You cant play old games like diablo 2 and others, whereas in windows8/8.1 you still can play many old games, and windows has many many many times more games Thats the real deal in this windows vs mac fight, rather than +- a few fps in some benchmarks, who cares about it, if you cant play games you want - playing with wine and similiar programs doesnt count here as mac games. Just dont take it personally, lol.
jeanlain
Not sure why you thought I took it personally by specifying that the OS X results get closer to the Windows results. No one was discussing the number of games in each platform. You're off topic.
jeanlain
Anyone cares to run the Valley Benchmark? My laptop is too slow for a relevant test.
Graebags
I ran Unigine Valley Benchmark 1.0 on Mavericks Prev 7 and Win 8.1: at Extreme setting ie 1600x900 8xAA windowed, Mavericks Prev 7 OpenGL score: fps 31.7, Score 1327 Windows 8.1, OpenGL score: fps 31.7, Score 1328 Windows 8.1, DirectX 11 score: fps 36.3, Score 1517 at Extreme HD setting ie 1920x1080 8xAA fullscreen, Mavericks Prev 7 OpenGL score: fps 23.7, Score 990 Windows 8.1, OpenGL score: fps 24.0, Score 1003 Windows 8.1, DirectX 11 score: fps 27.5, Score 1149 Note: I hadn't previously thought about this but it probably invalidates any direct comparison between the Mavericks and Win 8.1 results, (confesses) my Win 8.1 drive is a Liteon 256gb sata3 SSD, while OS X runs on an old Hitachi 1tb sata2 HDD. Some rainy day I'll switch Mavericks onto the SSD and make for a fair comparison. Well it wasn't raining, but I did image Mavericks to the SSD, results: at Extreme setting ie 1600x900 8xAA windowed, score: fps 31.6, Score 1322 at Extreme HD setting ie 1920x1080 8xAA fullscreen, score: fps 23.8, Score
jeanlain
Be careful with the "windowed" score. As I mentioned on netkas' blog, OS X imposes Vsync on any windowed app, even if you explicitly disable it. At least it does on my Macs. I'm not sure if windows does it.
