[Incomplete guide] HP DV6-6047CL Mountain Lion 10.8.4

THE ORIGINAL POST

Hello, I've been furiously working on getting my laptop to run Mountain Lion. I felt I should share what I found so far and hopefully it can help those who have similar models and specifications.

My specifications:

Bios: Insyde rev.3.5 F.1A
CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.0 ghz - Working with Speedstep
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 @ 1333 mhz - Working
HDD: Toshiba 1TB 5400rpm sata - Working with 4k boot sector fix (I recently replaced this with an SSD and I would recommend doing this as it increases battery life and performance drastically.)
Chipset: HM65
Graphics: Intel HD 3000 + AMD Radeon 6770m - HD 3000 working (AMD not working of course)
Audio: IDT High Definition audio - Working with no mic volume control (Help always appreciated)
USB: 2 usb 2.0, 2 usb 3.0 - Working
Wifi: Atheros AR928X - Working (Or any other halfsize pcie wifi card that works with OS X)
Ethernet: Realtek LAN - Working with new IONetworkingfamily.kext
Card reader - Not working at all (Help appreciated)
External VGA and HDMI ports - Working
Display: 1366x768 LED backlit display (Backlight works now!)

1. Flash the bios in the zip file to your system (BE VERY SURE YOU HAVE THE SAME MODEL OR A MODEL WITH THE SAME BIOS.) using windows 7 or greater.
2. Download 10.8 Mountain Lion app in whatever way you choose.
3. Create a USB installer in whatever way you choose.
4. Install the OS as usual. Boot with the cpus=1 argument. You can also follow Rehabman's tutorial at this point to make a dualboot of windows and mac os x if you so desire (good for flashing bios and playing games) Also, on reboot you will have to reset the cmos by removing the battery and power cable THEN removing the cmos battery and putting it back in.
5. Boot into your new install using the usb key and the cpus=1 argument again, download the 10.8.4 combo update and perform the update.
6. When the update finishes, do not reboot just yet.
7. Next, use the lapic kernel patcher to patch the kernel for all 4 cores. Then open Terminal and type in these commands, typing in your root password when necessary.

sudo chown root:wheel /mach_kernel
sudo chmod 644 /mach_kernel

8. Install the kexts from the "Kexts" folder with your preferred kext installer
9. Follow Rehabman's tutorial here on installing the Trackpad Kext in the Release folder, use your preferred kext installer for this: https://github.com/RehabMan/OS-X-Voo...How-to-Install
10. Install HWSensors from the package provided.
11. Install chameleon, I used 2.1 but anything later will probably suffice.
12. Copy the Extra folder to the root of your hard drive.
13. Next copy "DisplayVendorID-4ca3" folder to /System/Library/Displays/Overrides. This is to correct the name in system information for the display.

For anyone who has an SSD, skip 14 and 15.

14. Reboot, but boot into your usb installer again. Check what your hard disk is named in disk utility, unmount it, and then open up a terminal window.
15. Type this in EXACTLY

dd if=/usr/standalone/i386/boot1h of=device name bs=4K

Raw device being that name you checked in disk utility.

16. If you have done this all correctly, you may boot to the hard drive/ solid state drive and enjoy a 99%~ complete hackintosh!

Things that I am working on:

-Switchable graphics or disabling the 6770m completely whether it be a DSDT edit or via bios (via bios sometimes works but more than most of the time causes a cmos reset)
-Microphone controls are not present in the sound prefpane
-SD card reader, which I don't use really so I'm working on this last

Credits for the patched AppleHDA, Voodoops2, Chameleon, Kext utility, the custom bios, Lapic kernel patcher, and anything else I missed, go to the creators of these tools and extensions as I did not make them. Most recently donovan6000 helped me get my brightness keys work using Dolnor's IOWMI kext.

UPDATE This is a link to my most recently modified DSDT. The brightness keys work once again, and everything else should work as expected. Just place in your Extra folder. Also, I recently installed Mavericks DP8 to my current machine and it runs nearly flawlessly. The only thing that is slightly wonky is the battery meter which says it tops off at about 88%. If anyone has any input to patch a DSDT so that I don't have to replace appleACPIPlatform.kext, it would be quite appreciated. Otherwise enjoy!

UPDATE!: I've disappeared for quite some time now. But, I am back with some good stable results!

My new specifications:
 

Bios:

 

Insyde rev.3.5 F.1B (Modded by Donovan6000!)

 

Notes:No wifi whitelist, MSR register is patched so the vanilla AICPM.kext may be used, Switchable graphics can be enabled and disabled, Hyperthreading can be disabled and enabled, I am told that EFI boot can work but may have some kinks.
 

CPU:

 

Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.0 ghz

Notes: Speedstep should work fine with the custom SSDT from my extra folder.
 

RAM:

 

8 GB DDR3 @ 1333 mhz
 

Storage Media:

 

Samsung 840 Evo 256 GB SSD (Incredibly fast with TRIM patch and an enabled kernel cache.)

Notes: I highly recommend an SSD as it seems pretty harmonious with OS X and this system. I will provide instructions for those who have the boot0 error on systems that have a hard drive with a 4K boot sector.

 

Graphics:

 

Intel HD 3000 + AMD Radeon 6770m - HD 3000 working

 

Notes: I'm looking into the suggestion that AeroXLR has provided for the 6770m. This, in tandem with Donovan6000's EFI boot modification to get a full EFI clover. Can't guarantee that switchable graphics will work though.
 

Audio:

 

IDT 92HD81B1X5

 

Notes: Output seems to work correctly but I cannot test the microphone anymore because it broke physically. If anyone has this audio chipset and can confirm that it all works, that would be great.
 

USB:

 

2x usb 2.0 ports

2x usb 3.0 ports

 

Notes: These seem to all work but I have a strong feeling that the USB 3.0 ports on the left side are rolling back to 2.0.
 

Wifi: 

 

Atheros AR928X

Notes: It just werks.
 

Ethernet:

 

Realtek LAN

Notes: Works with a modified IONetworkingfamily.kext

 

Card reader:

 

Notes: I've sort of given up on this because it's useless to me. If anyone finds the fix, I'll gladly edit the tutorial to accommodate.
 

External VGA and HDMI ports: 

 

Works mostly.

 

Notes: Haven't tested HDMI audio.
 

Display:

 

1920x1080 Thinkpad Display

 

Notes: Needs a dual-link patch to display properly. If you have the lower resolution screen and experience problems with my DSDT, comment about it and I'll whip up a DSDT with the same patches but no Dual-link patch.

Things that are different:

-The battery meter SHOULD work properly as I used a patch developed by Rehabman. A different battery kext is provided as well.

-Audio behaves much nicer now. I used to encounter issues with the sound not working if I plugged in headphones but this seems to have gone away unexpectedly.

-Sleep works, but only via the apple in the menubar and by setting it in the energy preferences and waiting. Lid sleep refuses to work and instead everything including the display remains on when the lid is shut. I'm not sure what causes this and I am attempting to fix it. A small oddity occurs with the brightness as well, where the the screen is brighter after waking from sleep. Usually doesn't cause any issues as I usually just shutdown my computer anyway. Any input is greatly appreciated as always!

 

-I am now using Mac OS X 10.9.2. The Extra folder and bios mod will work for other versions of Mac OS and Chameleon but I cannot guarantee that the kexts and kernel included in this tutorial will work for older versions of Mac OS.

THE NEW TUTORIAL!

 

BEFORE YOU START: Make sure that your laptop is in fact a DV6-6047CL. DSDT's and BIOS mods are very often MODEL SPECIFIC. If you do not double check this you could end up with a bricked machine. I am not liable for this sort of thing. I will attempt to assist you in recovering your machine. You may also visit Donovan6000's blog where he does have a bios recovery guide for most HP laptops of similar models. Another thing, a hackintosh is an experiment and not everything is guaranteed to work perfectly.

ANOTHER THING: As I mentioned previously, this tutorial is for 10.9.2. This machine seems to update to newer versions of OS X with grace but I can't guarantee that everything will work perfectly. I will make updates to this tutorial if I note any key differences in newer versions and I will create new zip files based on versions of os x as I do all this. I also cannot guarantee that I will be punctual about all this.

Now, onto the tutorial!

Things you need:

- A Mac/Hackintosh/Virtual machine with OS X and USB passthrough support

 

- Windows 7 or later already installed on the laptop for bios flashing

 

- An 8 GB or larger USB flash drive
 

- A USB keyboard and mouse in case your touchpad and keyboard do not work initially.

-Inhuman amounts of patience. ;)

STEP 1: Installing the bios mod!

 

- Download the modded bios from Donovan6000's Bios Repository with the name sp55068: http://donovan6000.blogspot.com/2013/12/modded-bios-repository.html

- Extract the zip file you downloaded and run InsydeFlash.exe from the folder enclosed.
NOTE: Make sure to only run this on the laptop and not on another system.

- Let the application flash the BIOS and then reboot.

- If all went well, the machine should POST as usual and boot as it always has.

STEP 2: Configuring the bios!

- To make this short and sweet, all you should have to do is disable the switchable graphics.

- Shut down your laptop completely

- Press the power button and hit esc as you see the HP logo

- Hit F10 for system setup

- Navigate to the Advanced tab

- Select the Video Configuration option
 

- And then, change Special Features from Enabled to Disabled. Congrats! You disabled your dedicated graphics!

- If for whatever reason you need them enabled again, just change this setting to Enabled.

STEP 3: Preparing your OS X installer!

- There are plenty of other methods of setting up an OS X flash drive installer but I prefer a vanilla method of doing so. Using the "Tony" method would work just fine in this case. 
The installer just has to be 10.9.2 or you have to have the 10.9.2 combo update applied after installation.

 

Note: I'll eventually add a full vanilla usb installer tutorial. Sorry people. :P

STEP 4: Installing OS X

 

- Boot from the flash drive installer you just created and select whatever you named the flash drive in the chameleon menu. 

Note: The cpus=1 flag is required to boot the installer. If you have further problems, you can try -x paired with -v to pinpoint what's preventing the system from booting.

- Install OS X with GUID partition table and HFS+ partition type.

- When the installer asks you to restart, do so and boot with the same flags you booted the installer successfully with, but on your new partition instead of the installer.

 

STEP 5: Post-install

 

- Use chameleon wizard to install the latest chameleon to your mac os install's partition.

Note: I suggest putting this app into your applications folder in case you need to configure any bits of chameleon differently or need to update it.

- Copy my custom Extra folder to the root of your mac os install.

- Install all of the kexts in my zip file and copy the org.rehabman.voodoo.driver.Daemon.plist to /Library/LaunchDaemons and VoodooPS2Daemon to /usr/bin

- Reboot and your OS X install should be as perfect as it gets!

Awesome guide man! I wish I saw this when I was trying to get OSX to work :)
I flashed your custom bios. What settings in the bios should I use to disable the 6770m? Anytime I try to change something I have to CMOS reset and it doesn't save :(

Thank you! Your laptop model looks slightly different so your model may have some hardware variation. Everything should work without disabling the 6770m initially so before actually attempting to disable the 6770m in the bios, you should get everything you can working in OS X. This includes Power management, audio, usb 3.0, battery, and a properly edited DSDT (This goes hand in hand with most of the hardware). When you got it running full blast, in the bios go to Advanced -> Video configuration -> Special features and turn it off. It's hit or miss for the setting to stick, but it usually works when your cmos clock is synced correctly via the OS and everything is functioning in the OS (Don't ask me how lol). Also, I would suggest updating to 10.8.4 because on my model  it works perfectly and this entire guide is based around it!

Would you mind clearing some stuff up? Why doesn't the AMD 6670m work? And why cant you map your backlight keys with Rehabman's Voodoops2 kext?

I tried to credit everybody for creating certain utilities so sorry if I missed your name. :P haha Also, I have tested the lapic kernel patcher in every dev preview of mavericks and I can confirm that it works perfectly up to DP5. Not to be offtopic. :)

 

The AMD Radeon 6770m is actually somewhat of a mystery to me. There are several Macbook pro and iMacs with this GPU in it. The Macbook pro even has switching to HD 3000 (Exactly like my setup, a muxless switchable graphics setup.). The problem really is that it just doesn't allow for the switching and the GPU doesn't even show up correctly in sys info. I saw a thread here once where someone got it to recognize but it was in the spanish section of the forum. There was a DSDT edit and everything but I couldn't get it to work in my own DSDT properly.

 

As for the backlight keys, I currently mapped them to fn + f1 and f2 for backlight level down and up but i would like them to just be f2 and f3 because that's where they are on the keyboard. The problem is that these keys don't give off any scancodes to map and I have no idea how to get them to work properly whether it be by dsdt edit or by kernel extension. I was told by rehabman that my buttons are more than likely ACPI buttons and that I would need something else to get them to map properly. If anyone knows of such a thing, I would pretty much have a finished hackintosh!

Also, donovan, I am absolutely intrigued with the bios modding in your blog. I have an insyde bios and this is absolutely of value to me. I have never gotten a clear guide on how to dump a bios and modify it in any way. I hate RSA signing. :P

If there is in the bios no option to switch off integrated gfx the 6770m will never work. Get the DSDT in Win7 with Aida64 and look in it for discrete gfx. If it is there, there could be a chance to get it working with a bios mod that unhide this option. But attention it is dangerous to switch off the integrated gfx completly. This could cause no gfx output.

 

Artefacts by HD3000 are related with ApppleSNBGraphicsFB.kext. Patching the conector infos can help. Search in the forum for this. There are some threads about it.

I don't seem to get artifacts anymore. I really wish I could acquire the dsdt for the macbook with this same setup. I would put time into trying to find out how to support switching.

The related layout is completly different. Therefore switching will never work. A year ago I had found a DSDT of this macbook. As far as I can remember now, it had been posted on a russian site.

 

Have you patched AppleRTC.kext and done the DSDT edit?

My laptop was the same way with the ACPI controlled backlight keys. Was also the last thing I needed to fix on my hackintosh, and it took me several months to get it figured out :blush:

Like you can make it so you don't need a patched AppleIntelCpuPowerManagement.kext by removing the lock on the register that it writes C-state values to. That would be absolutely amazing. It's really the last thing I would want to get working if the switchable graphics don't work.

 

And I've always had trouble with my bios and this is the first truly clear tutorial on doing anything. Mad props for that! I'll be fashioning together my own modded bios, but I'll have to give credit to camiloml of course because the bios mod it's based off is by him and I need the functionality it supplies. Still great that these things are possible. :)

I couldn't find anything on bios modding a few months ago, and that's the primary reason I started writing those tutorials. Tried really hard to make them as clear as simple as possible because I would have loved to have something like that when I got started ^_^

I couldn't find anything on bios modding a few months ago, and that's the primary reason I started writing those tutorials. Tried really hard to make them as clear as simple as possible because I would have loved to have something like that when I got started ^_^

In the tutorial I was looking all over the place for the device AMW0 which seems to be key to this whole thing. The problem is I don't actually have that. Do I have to add it?

Nevermind GOT IT! I didn't really need to know where that device is I guess. It was linked to these keys that had some junk about GFX0 and PEGP which leads me to believe it has something to do with the radeon. But whatevs, I got working brightness keys. Thank you so much donovan!

I think it's ASUS have their controller named AMW0. Mine was called WMID, so I assume it has no stable name across all DSDTs. Were your keys the same with _Q10 and _Q11? And was the code you added similar to the one I had to use?

Just trying to see if all HPs ACPI keys are alike.

The keys were not the same. For mine it was _Q17 being f3 and _Q18 being f2 which is strange because it was reverse order :P And this is how I worded them really.

 

Store (0x03, ^^^^WMID.WMIU)

Notify (WMID, 0x80)

...

Store (0x02, ^^^^WMID.WMIU)
Store (Zero, ^^^^WMID.WMIV)

Hey bro, I already have everything working on my DV6 6090ee, except switchable graphics and internal wifi (i use a tiny buffalo external usb wifi). Just updated to 10.8.4 through app store software updater and everything went through smoothly, only broke audio. Now I tried to disable special features in the bios, but sometimes it cmos resets and other times it says its going to cmos reset but doesn't... does that mean the 6770m is disabled and the setting has stuck?

EDIT: Also, do you experience a bit of lag in the dock? like its noticeable after you disable Beam Sync in quartz debug. It really bothers me.

I think, that you have to patch AppleRTC.kext again. You also need a new patched Hda kext. You can try to install the version, that you had installed before updating.

Without the AppleRTC.kext patch it cmos resets EVERY reboot/shutdown/whatever. But, this doesn't prevent cmos resets due to the RSA signing in the bios that I use. Almost everytime you change settings in the bios, it causes a cmos reset. Sometimes it doesn't, though. If I knew how to remove the RSA signing I would in an instant.

It actually seems to work more favorably when the clocks are synced properly. Just something I noticed. :)

For me i've tried literally multiple hundreds of times to try and disable special features then save but each {censored} bloody time I reboot the setting does not save! I spent half an hour trying and still not even once did it save. I even tried just turning Virtualization from off to on, which is a setting that was available in the default stock HP Bios, and even that caused a CMOS reset! Can you tell me exactly how you disable it? I always press F10 to save and exit, then wait for the laptop to reboot itself. Is there some other way to save?  Mac OS X 10.8.4 is working almost fully yet I can still not manage even a single successful disable of the 6770m. Thanks alot for your great help bro! Sorry for annoying you.

Not a problem at all. Honestly? I bought a really nice 12 cell battery so my battery life isn't really an issue. I just leave the card on because it's too much of a pain to turn it off. I think in Donovan's blog there was something about rewriting the bios to have different default settings which I will probably end up doing to the bios within my pack. I'll try and make it so I have one bios for the 6770m on for in windows and one for the 6770m off in mac os x. I'm a little busy with school recently so I can't put a ton of time into it. The best thing I can suggest as of now is to invest 40-50 into a 12 cell battery for your model. Stock batteries suck anyway. :P

Holy {censored}, this guy is a boss. Awesome. My stock 6 cell battery is dead anyway and I am going to pick up an extended one soon. Thanks :)

Thanks for all the comments on my blog! I just wish I had more free time lately to do more bios stuff, but my new semester started today so I'm a little overwhelmed.

 

I'll take a look at your guy's bios to see if I can get them working better. Might take me a few days, so keep checking back here  B)

Got some free time today to check it out. Nothing too difficult.

 

So I unlocked the Advanced and Power tabs. There was also an additional Main tab, but it was kind of boring so I left it hidden :P

 

Removed the wifi whitelist check.

 

Also removed the lock on the register that mac uses to store c-state info. Now you don't need a patched AppleIntelCpuPowerManagement.kext anymore :thumbsup_anim:

 

Be aware that there is always some risk involved when flashing bios. It is entirely your decision if you want to try it. You can get it here. Just run InsydeFlash.exe to flash it :D

OMG DONOVAN YOU ARE {censored} AWESOME!!! I flashed your bios and in the first try i can easily disable 6770m without any cmos resets or problems!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm getting 4 hours battery life on 52% charge on my 12 cell with vanilla appleintel kext and 6770m off...which means approximately 8hours when fully charged! Thank you again so much Donovan :D this bios you made in one day is more stable and functional than any other custom bios for our dv6 6xxx. AmazinG!

 

BTW Lightskreen update the guide to use Donovan's bios :)
