I restored the image to an 8gb usb drive and the install went fine. Now whenever I boot the system without the usb drive inserted, the laptop boots directly to the bios. If I boot with the usb drive inserted, I am greeted by a mac selection screen where I can choose the mac os and it boots fine but works only with the usb drive inserted and the system is accessing the usb drive frequently.
