This is my handy tools that always help me to do 1st osx86 installation. I get this message "still waiting for root device" when I plug my IDE DVD optical drive into the mobo. So I try to use this USB to SATA/IDE interface to help me solve that problem.

1. Attach the IDE plug into the optical DVD drive

2. Connect the USB into the PC USB

3. Connect the power adapter into the optical DVD drive

4. Power on your PC and hit DEL to get into the BIOS

5. If you have a boot selection by pressing F12 then do so

6. Try to select from Boot option this USB drive

7. Insert the installer then 'voila' it solve the "still waiting for root device" problem

Hi, I have bought an controller as u said. But the drive is not detected at boot time. I can see that after I come into windows which doesn't help ofcourse. I know this is very vague, but if u got a clue I would be thankful.

@eswar, this tool is to help you install without having a PATA/SATA DVD. Make sure you select the USB CD-ROM not just a CD-ROM from the bios boot selection. It works for me in several motherboard type and i believe it will work for you as well. its a matter of a proper bios setting. hope this help

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that it is not detected in the bios itself. It appears in the bios selection sometimes and sometimes it doesnt. Just wondering why this is happening. Also, the install gets stuck up at the ACPI controller messages. Did quite a search in the forum I tried everything but just couldnt fix it up. Which distro do u suggest for an ide dvd with mobo : intel dg33fb, core 2 duo 8400. Oops sorry for the long long msg have a good day :thumbsup_anim:

eswar, maybe the interface is not attached to the DVD-ROM properly ? it happens to me before because the IDE interface is too close with the power at the back of DVD-ROM. what I did is just to really push it until it properly inserted. i did install several distro, for Leopard version i found is Kalyway 10.5.1 (and upgrade to 10.5.2) is the one that really simple and works for me. Tried IATKOS and Leo4All, but it fail me. and I just did JaS 10.5.4 client/server that is most of the device is working out of the box. you can see my new post in this blog. what i want to try for next project is iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5. is there a chance for you to look for a new PATA/SATA DVD-ROM ?

I will try with JaS 10.5.4 client/server. Buying a new drive seems a little far fetched for me. Thanks again juragan. All this is to try out the iphone sdk. Hope something happens.
