Question on updating 10.8.3 to 10.8.4... do or don't?

I've just installed my first OS X on Intel, going with ML 10.8.3 from a .dmg, and everything is working fine. So, I now see there's an update to 10.8.4 and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or experience with updates to a hackintosh installation...mainly whether it's safe to do them, or not.

The only major changes I had to do to my installation was a Voodoo kext to get sound working, and exchanging a JMicron kext to get access to my IDE drive(s). But, do those things typically get replaced or overwritten when updating, and do updates more often than not whack some vital aspects of a Hackintosh installation on Intel?

Help me Obi-wan-kenobi...I'm a noob at this,

JTT

The less changes you have made compared to a vanilla installation, the less you have to fear. I don't know about Voodoo but the alternative method to get sound working - involving AppleHDA - will usually require you to reinsert that kext again. Patched system kexts, if you have any, will most likely be replaced and you will need to patch them again, for example AppleRTC. Custom kexts like FakeSMC will stay untouched.

Usually you can safely update but you should know the changes made to your system to be able to recover it, just in case.

Thanks to both of you for the support. Here's my experience with updating, and I can say that short of one frustrating scare, things seem to be working fine again.

I did backup my 10.8.3 version first, so I did have a disk image to fall back on in the event things didn't go well. For a while I thought I might have restore it, but maybe my experience can help someone else to be patient.

I ran the update with no obvious problems, until I rebooted. Suddenly the USB keyboard and mouse were not functional anymore. They were apparently 'alive' because the lights were on and I could tap the 'Caps Lock' key and the keyboard would respond. But the mouse would not move, and I couldn't click or type anything. Stuck dead, and for a while after rebooting, the little spinning wheel was frozen too. Oh boy...

I did boot to my USB drive and ran through a file system check and resetting permissions, since I saw online that someone suggested that for such problems. But nothing. I then tried copying over some of the kexts from my USB boot drive (IOUSBFamily.kext, IOUSBMassStorage.kext, FAKESMC, etc.) on the chance something was overwritten or changed. But it did look like the update had not removed or overwritten any of the previously installed ones, and at that point it still didn't work after rebooting.

But while I was again on my laptop looking for clues to what might be the problem, I'd left my Hackintosh machine sitting for a while on the stuck screen--and suddenly it moved! For some reason, it seemed to have been caught in the the dreaded "10-15 minutes of nothing" delay I'd read about once or twice, after which everything started to work again. Whew, as fast as I could I ran through mul**beast again and simply reapplied some of the things I guessed might be good to reapply, and after rebooting it came back to life right away, with no apparently mouse/keyboard delay this time.

(I can't honestly say that rerunning mul**beast again did anything, it was probably just superstitious thinking or hoping that while the keyboard and mouse were working I may as well run it and pray it might reset something.)

Anyway, I really have no idea what caused the long delay before the USB mouse and keyboard suddenly came back to life, but it sure had me sweatin..and a headache now :/ But I'm relieved that the update does seem to be booting and running nicely now.

Thanks to all,

JTT
