cypro Posted April 12, 2013 Share Posted April 12, 2013 Hello people, I am thinking to buy a Macbook Pro (Not the retina display) for my studies. The only think, I want some Linux distros and Windows expect of the Mac OS X. Arch Linux, Ubuntu and Windows 7. So my OSs will be Mac OS X Ubuntu Debian WIndows 7 Is these operating systems compatible with the macbook pro? Also I want to choose on boot on, which operating system to work and not a virtual machine, is this feasible? And if it is feasible do i loose the WARRANTY? If it's Windows, then Mac would not be the most optimal solution (budget wise). If it's OS X, then Mac for sure! Some (if not all) Linux distributions tend to have one or more bugs/troubles/issues even on PCs, so you should expect to have few kinks on Mac too. Windows should be much less of a trouble (if any). WhatTheTech Posted April 12, 2013 Share Posted April 12, 2013 I had issues installing Ubuntu on the Macbook 5,1 (aluminum macbook - basically the Macbook Pro). Wireless drivers were a pain, trackpad was glitchy and various other minor issues. What flavor of linux do you usually use? It's not impossible, and there are many people enjoying linux installations on mac hardware, but it's not as simple as running the OS installer in many cases. The "same" result but better.I like the design of MBP too, it's the price that I don't like. I think if design is quite important feature for you and money is not an issue, then buy a Mac. Most likely you will not regret. But if your budget is limited, then a PC from other manufacturers like Samsung, HP, Dell, Toshiba etc., could be a better option. A brother of mine is a hardcore Linux geek. He was provided a new Dell notebook with a pre-installed Ubuntu. Well it did worked well with the pre-installed OS, but failed to work properly with Suse Linux 12.3. Hence one can never know whenever a new PC/Mac would work with all versions of Linux flawlessly.
