The InsanelyMac Staff, will work to produce, from next release, better management of credits and licenses where missing for the "OSX86 contents" that are included in Pandora.app.
Anyone can PM me to indicate any lack

Pandora's Box Beta Testing

Pandora's Box is currently a Beta release, so there's a good chance you may encounter a few bugs.
The purpose of this Beta release is to help identify and correct these errors.
So expect frequent changes and updates to the application during the Beta stage.

Please keep this in mind while using it.

Once the application gets a chance to mature, we will then begin adding additional language translations and hope to be able to include every different language that is supported by OSx.

Usage of Pandora's Box for the installation and maintenance of OSx on the x86 platform is purely for educational purposes. This is a free application, made by the community for the community. With that OSx86 spirit in mind, all are welcome to participate in it's further development. Just keep in mind that since the application is in Beta, so are the methods being used distribute it, apply updates and handle bug reports.

The Beta can be downloaded at our new Downloads Section here

When you first launch the application, the Pandora's Box GUI will present you with two simple options:

Attached File  Interface.png   370.04K   480 downloads

The first option on the left is the Installer tool, used to create a bootable OSx installer on a USB thumb drive, DVD or other HDD partition,

Attached File  popaup pre.png   240.64K   625 downloadsAttached File  popup post.png   188.44K   643 downloads

On the right side, is the Pandora's Box "Post-Installation" utility that can be used to modify your OSx installation, install  various hardware fixes and kernel extensions, along with other maintenece such as after applying a OSx software update. Extension files that are patched by Pandora's Box will be saved to a folder called "BackupExtensions" or "Backup_Video" (if you decide to work on the video kexts)

Pandora's Box post-installation:

If you click "Change install location" you can change the target volume if you want to apply changes to an OSx install other than your current boot volume (not all options are able to do so)

Post-Installation Options:

Attached File  post 4.png   220.16K   1195 downloads

Well, back to the creation of our new Installation. From the main GUI, choosing the "10.7 & 10.8 Installer" option will start the Wizard, and the first thing requested will be to enter the password of your account (which will be invisible as you type)

Attached File  password.png   359.17K   1252 downloads

As you can see Pandora's Box opened a folder called "InsanelyBox", (which will be closed automatically as soon as you enter the passoword of your User Account ...)

Attached File  InsanelyBox.png   79.09K   943 downloads

What can I put inside InsanelyBox folder?

1) If you already have the RecoveryUpdate.dmg from Apple, Pandora will give you the opportunity to create a Recovery partition on your Hack, as a real Mac!
Warning: If you don't have it already but want to create the recovery partition, you do not need to download it! In fact, Pandora will offer, while creating the USB / DVD Installation, to create the RecoveryHD and if the RecoveryUpdate.dmg is not present in the "InsanelyBox" folder, Pandora's Box will download it for you automatically.

2) If you have AMD CPU Hardware, or a netbook, you can put here the patched kernel, making sure to rename it as the original: "match_kernel"

Attached File  AMD_kernel.png   87.92K   730 downloads  rename the XXX_ kernel  to "mach_kernel", as shown below:Attached File  AMD rinominato.png   89.38K   679 downloads

The ACPI folder handles all your patched ACPI tables (if you have them) such as the DSDT.aml, SSDT.aml, SSDT-1.aml etc.. If placed here, they will be transferred onto the installer USB stick/DVD, but also onto the Final installation as well, so you do not need to manually copy them again post-install once they have been placed here:
Attached File  ACPI.png   76.28K   623 downloads

So, after the password has been entered, all Finder windows will close automatically and Pandora's Box will ask if your want to create the system installation on a USB or burn to a blank DVD-R. Attached File  creare usb.png   40.13K   620 downloads
type 1 for USB and 2 for DVD and press enter.

At this point, Pandora will ask you which OSx version you are going to install:
Attached File  scelta OS.png   44.03K   410 downloads
type 1 for Mountain Lion, and 2 if you use Lion

What should I do now?

Simple! if Pandora's Box can not find an original OSx application in /Applications, it will prompt you to drag and drop it inside of it's window, this can be the classic app downloaded from AppStore, or the InstallESD.dmg image for Developers (if you are).
Attached File  app non trovata.png   40.07K   649 downloads

as in the photo below, all you have to do is "drag & drop", wherever it is, the app or the image, inside the window and press enter:

Attached File  trascina app.png   287.37K   952 downloads (testo) Attached File  trascina USB.png   288.19K   992 downloads

Now begins the "restore" that will last 15-20 minutes depending on the speed of your USB flash drive:

Attached File  Restore.png   92.54K   988 downloads

After the restore, Pandora asks you what smbios.plist you want to choose.
Warning:
the SMBIOS is very important, is the file that tells OSx what type of hardware to expect (CPU, GPU, CPU, Desktop or Laptop), you must choose the one with characteristics closest to your hardware!

The smbios.plist will be transferred in both USB/DVD but also to your final installation:

Attached File  scegli smbios.png   93.54K   983 downloads

Choose the screen resolution (in pixels) of your system Desktop or Laptop:

Attached File  Scegli risoluzione.png   63.2K   903 downloads

Pandora System

Now you have to choose if you want a totally Vanilla installation or transform your USB/DVD adopting the "InsanelyMac Pandora System"

Attached File  Scegli Retail o Pandora.png   47.34K   961 downloads

type 1 to make a Retail installation, with the addition of the FakeSMC.kext (only required kext) and the bootloader to make it bootable on any PC. Now press enter and wait for the end.
or type 2, creating the Pandora system on USB/DVD:

Next Pandora's Box will create a system of choices to for you customize your hardware during the installation of OSx, which will allow you to start the first time after the installation!

Options for Desktop and Laptop systems

Pandora offers some options that will allow your USB stick to boot on most of the hardware in circulation:

all the default options install FakeSMC.kext, the Wifi Injector, the patch to install on MBR partition table type (which allows you to install alongside Microsoft Windows without formatting the entire hard disk), also enables the installation on systems with less than 2GB of RAM (1GB for example), which otherwise would not be possible on Lion and Mountain Lion.

AMD users have to choose an option that contains the NullCPUPowerManagemet.kext to disable the native Power Management for Intel processors, to avoid Kernel Panic. Same thing for those who have a  Sandy or Ivy Bridge processor (with the Post-Installation tool of Pandora's Box, you can patch AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, to activate the power saving features and most likely sleep as well.

The injector for Disk & AHCI, allows you to start from USB or DVD without the  "Still waiting for root device" error, caused by non-activation of the SATA controller driver, and to avoid the timeout of IOAHCIBlockstorage.

Options for Laptop behave in the same way as the Desktop options, with the difference being additional drivers for the keyboard and trackpad.

Attached File  Scegli Desktop:Laptop.png   83.93K   1050 downloads

Note: Options 1 for a Desktop, and 5 for a Laptop,  are the options to choose if you're not sure how your hardware behaves in OSx, choose them if you want an "Easy way".

Small summary of what you are installing on USB Key/DVD ..

Attached File  Splash riepilogo.png   104.26K   896 downloads
RecoveryHD

Finished doing the patch, Pandora will propose the creation of the Recovery partition, and if you choose to do it, but you did not put the RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg inside the InsanelyBox  folder , Pandora will do the donwnload automatically if a connection to the Internet is present.

Attached File  Scelta Recovery.png   40.28K   792 downloads

Wait a few minutes ... if you chose to create the RecoveryHD ...

Attached File  attendi per Recovery.png   38.21K   581 downloads

Well, the process is completed, as confirmed by Pandora:

Attached File  Operazioni Completate.png   51.24K   555 downloads

now you can see the Pandora Installer icon on your Desktop:

Attached File  creata USB.png   49.95K   368 downloads

You just have to restart  on your Hack and begin the installation!

Create DVD and/or RecoveryHD-ready image (both USB and DVD compatible)

Create DVD image

The steps for creating the iso are similar if not identical to those of the creation of the pendrive (USB).

You just have to choose option 2 from the menu pictured below:
http://www.insanelym...ttach_id=121303

Once this is done you can continue the development of your image with the instructions from the first post Micky1979.

Create RecoveryHD

In order to create the Recovery partition you choose "Y" when you are asked (see image below):
http://www.insanelym...ttach_id=121328

Be careful though, you can create the Recovery partition on only one disk partitioned as GUID Partition Table (GPT). This does not depend on us but on the tools made available by Apple.

It should be noted that the script file download from internet RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg (for a total of about 452 MB) to retrieve needed files. If you already have the file you can copy it in the folder mentioned above and follow the instructions on the first post. This will create everything you need to create the RecoveryHD with the version file used to create the USB/DVD.

OSX INSTALL: RUNNING AND USING YOUR PANDORA BUILT INSTALLER

Set your PC's BIOS to boot from USB or DVD, depending on what type of installer you created. Once your installer boots, you will see this screen. This GUI screen is the Enoch branch of the Chameleon bootloader. From here, choose the Pandora installer and press enter on your keyboard to boot.

Posted Image

Wait for the OSx installer to load. Once it has finished booting you should arrive at the first OSx screen. Here choose your language to continue:

Posted Image

You should now see an Install confirmation screen with the InsanelyMac logo. At his time, if you already have a properly formatted partition ready to install onto, you can click yes and continue on to the next screen.

If you still need to create a partition to install to, from the menu bar above, click on "utilities" and choose "Disk Utility" from the drop down list to launch OSx's hard drive utility and format a new partition or entire hard drive to install onto. You can install onto a drive with either a GUID orMBR partitioning scheme, but the file system you choose for your OSx partition needs to be "Mac OS Extended Journaled" also known as NFS+. Another important note, while you can install to a drive with an MBR partition scheme, which means is you have a Windows installation on the same disk you can still combine an OSx installation partition onto the same hard drive, you will need to have created these partitions ahead of time as OSx's Disk Utility.app is not capable of making changes to a hard drive that already contain a Windows file formatted (NTFS) partition, without completely reformatting and erasing it first. Once you have your new partition ready, quit Disk Utility and continue past the install confirmation screen.

Posted Image

Here you will see a list of available partitions, chose the once you want to install OSx to, and you can now also choose to further customize you installation

Posted Image

Insanely Options .... here you'll find a number of different options that can be used to enable hardware found on most PC's or Notebook computers

Posted Image Posted Image

The categories that contain further options are: Bootloader, Audio, Network, USB, Laptop Support, CMOS, Disk, Video and Applications for your Hack

Now moving onto the actual installation, you have the opportunity to open the Installation Summary log. At the end of the installation process you can then save a "log" of the installation you just made. If you think possible problems may have occurred, this log file can be given to us for review and can help assess if something went wrong during the installation!

Posted Image Posted Image

Note: The Summary of Installation will be saved within 10 seconds

Posted Image

otherwise ... it will restart automatically!

Now you should be able to boot into your new OSx installation! When you boot for the first time, you'll see a copy of the Pandora's Box application already available in your Applications folder or accessible via LaunchPad, along with optional applications you may have chosen to include from the "Insanely Options" choices made earlier

Hi all,

before we begin, I want to thank InsanelyMac and my colleagues and all participants in the Project!
This project may have a great development, and was born developing the initial work of ErmaC in Lionize. My only idea was to create on the fly the "Pandora System", and through the contributions of Ermac and Marchrius that are an essential part of the  Pandora's engine. Together we have laid the foundation for a fascinating Tool integrated into the app you see now, thought by eep357 and TH3L4UGH1NGM4N.

But now, I want to thank  as "Men", Alessandro17 and Ermac for allowing me to work on a project like this, which I feel a friend of them.

Hi Micky1979

Looking through the package contents I see there's been a large amount of work gone in to this. Is it going to be possible to provide a list of credits for everyone responsible for each patch, kext, tool etc?

With regards to Pandora.app/Contents/Resources/Base/Insanelymac/PKG/Applications/DarwinDumper.app.zip
Can you include the latest version?

Thanks

Yes, and no. For any included files, kexts, tools that is the intent. Adding and adjusting all the descriptions is still ongoing...Then comes doing it all again in every other language. Since I'd expect there will be many contributions made by users in bug fixes, and numerous other improvements to the app itself as time goes on, which could number in hundreds maybe, it may be difficult to include everyone in that credit list. We'll see, I too have to remind myself: beta, beta, beta. So many things I think now may change or be wrong.

Hi Micky1979 & eep357

Thanks for your replies.

I have no problem with DarwinDumper being included in your project, in fact I think it's a good idea that it is included, I just wanted to suggest you used the most recent version.

I understand this is an early release and things will undoubtedly change as this matures. I was only pointing out my initial thoughts when I saw this. Don't get me wrong, I think what you guys are doing is great and anything that gives users an alternative to the "beast" tools is a good thing. I just remember one of the issues with tony mac was he never gave credit for anything so I just didn't want to see this get tarnished in the same way before it's even got off the ground. eep357's reply to 3.14r2's question about the downloads section is spot on and  should apply here too.

So keep up the good work and I look forward to watching this evolve.

I still haven't actually run this yet as I have my system all up an running so I don't have a need to, but I was familiar with Erma C's previous lionize script so I get an idea of what it does. Maybe when I come to do a re-install I may try it.

Thanks Magnifico, to notice this.
In the first installation made with Pandora, OSx installer that assigns permissions to the Extra folder located in the root, as other files that are in there!
However, you can try running Kext Utility, included with every installation, and I think this problem will go away. You can do this test?

Thanks for that.
You are absolutely right, and what you suggest be done, just a little bit of time (a little).
I agree that OSx86 scene (the real one), should work together, but to do this I never thought how to accomplish this. Unfortunately I do not do politics in this sense, because my personally thought, is usually free from malice. Although my feelings recognize when something is wrong

So keep up the good work and I look forward to watching this evolve.

I still haven't actually run this yet as I have my system all up an running so I don't have a need to, but I was familiar with Erma C's previous lionize script so I get an idea of what it does. Maybe when I come to do a re-install I may try it.

To me, making sure credits are included on these things is a very top priority. Even understanding it's very early beta, this was a mistake for them not to all be updated even in this is early first release version. My apologies, is my fault as I should have double checked on this very thing first. Your understanding and updated version are both much appreciated!
