After countless tries to get USB tethering with my android phone working I came across this:

HoRNDIS: a usb tethering driver for OS X

It comes across with several advantages:

* No extra software required on the phone
* No extra app required on the computer
* Support for PPTP VPNs
* Supports OS X versions from 10.6.8 upwards (tested by me on 10.8.2)
* Inherently more secure than WiFi connection, and more stable too
* Best of all, it comes free of charge =)

Usage is simple:

1. Download installer and run it
2. Reboot
3. Connect Android phone via USB Cable
4. Enable USB Tethering in phone setting
5. Profit =)
