[OFF TOPIC] No doubt we need to write up-to-date 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 installation guides: the ones we find here and elsewhere are very deprecated.

You need MyHack and retail, period - it's not a holier than thou instance, it's because Niresh's content is old and it's very very deprecated by now. Won't work.

So you need a retail copy, to which you'll add one of the latest Lion kernels for AMD - search in Insanelymac's downloads section. Place it at the root of your installer and after installation, in the root of your HDD, renaming it as amd_kernel. Because of you graphics card, which only work with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 +, never with Lion, and even with Mountain Lion it needs workarounds, you'll have also to delete all AMD Radeon kexts from the installer and from the final installation too. Boot with  amd_kernel arch=i386 -v -f npci=0x2000 and that of course means you won't have graphics acceleration or even proper resolution, which imho cripples OSX's user experience badly. My advice? Buy a HD5450 Silent (has to be silent, preferentially Sapphire) because they're very cheap and will work with a couple of easy kext edits with both Lion and Mountain Lion - flawlessly with Lion, with tolerable glitches under Mountain Lion.

All the best!

So even if I went with a Lion install, I'd still be out of luck with this card? I mean I doubt I'd even want to run it if I can't get close to full support.

Unfortunately, that's the reality: the solution costs around $30 (three Big Mac combos, can't you endure that?) and it's called Sapphire HD5450 Silent.

All the best!

Alright I'll look into buying one of those if I end up really, really wanting it instead of waiting for support.

I also have an old 8800 GTX Ultra, would this work?

I think yes, it does! But only with Lion, so that's your "homework" ;)

All the best!

P.S.: i don't know about the Ultra series, but i read somewhere else the 8800 GTX definitely works.

I'm thinking I'll just go out and buy a HD5450 Silent tomorrow. Off topic-ish question, can I have both cards installed on my PC at the same time?

There is, but you won't ever get hardware acceleration. If it's okay for you, start with Lion.

All the best!

Not sure if this a good place to ask this or not but I was wondering what's the best route on upgrading 10.6.8 to Lion?

A fresh install. Personally, I recommend using myHack plus a vanilla copy of Install Mac OS X Lion.app to create a bootable USB stick. Use Bronzovka's mach_rc15 kernel with the boot flag arch=i386 (enables 32-bit kernelspace with 64-bit userland for graphics to work properly); it can also be used with arch=x86_64 for full 64-bit mode if desired.

I'll most certainly be giving that try later today!
Thanks!

I'd recommend not to.

On my machine, npci=0x3000 is required. Could you post your specs in you signature?

Added it. Got it installed using the rc13 mach_kernel. Now, I just can't get into Lion.

It starts and then quickly restarts.

Of course! You have to copy the patched kernel from the installer to the root of your HDD. If you've already done it, use the flag -f.

All the best!
