In WS9, sound works out of the box with OS X 10.8. WS9 emulates an Intel HD Audio chip and the driver that comes with 10.8 works fine with it.

However, in OS X 10.6, no sound device is seen by the OS. Is there a driver that will work with VMWare's emulated HDA chip? As a workaround, one can switch from HDA to the Ensoniq Audio PCI emulation (by editing the vmx) and then use zenith's audio driver. But this has the usual sound dropout problems. The HDA driver in OS X 10.8 seems to work much better, and so it would be cool if it was somehow possible to use it for 10.6 too.

You could try installing VoodooHDA on 10.6. The VMware virtual HDA codec reports itself as Nvidia MCP79 (vendor 0x10de, device 0xac0), which is supported by VoodooHDA. I haven't actually tried this, as I don't run 10.6 anymore.
