Newbie question - How to get retail Snow Leopard?

Hello everyone,

I'm an old hand when it comes to computers in general, with over thirty years of experience going back to my very first Atari 800. This is my first delve into the Apple computer world though. The whole "Hackintosh" project sounded pretty cool and something I'd like to play with. After reading of so many successful OS X installations on Dell 1545s, the same little laptop I have, I thought I'd like to give it a try. I'm just starting my research.

My very first question is related to purchasing a copy of Mac OS X. I believe I'd like to try Snow Leopard. I've read through what seems to be one of the main Dell 1545 threads and numerous people kept saying "Why would anyone buy this (Snow Leopard) from Amazon when anyone can buy it from Apple for only $19.95?"

Can anyone really buy it from Apple for $19.95 or $29.95?! I would've thought that only existing customers, existing Mac owners would be able to do that, and, if I were an original Mac owner, why the heck would I be here trying to create a Hackintosh?! Anyway, not being a previous Mac owner, can anyone, and anyone being me, purchase a retail version of Snow Leopard for cheap from Apple?

Thanks to anyone that may be able to answer my question.

Sincerely,

Yes - anyone with a telephone and a credit card can order Snow Leopard. I recently did this, and talked about it in a thread located here.

If I might make a suggestion - you could have searched this site for keywords like "purchase" and "snow leopard" and you would have run into this thread. This site has so many answers to so many questions, your best friend here will be the search button up top.

Welcome to the forum and happy hacking!

Thanks Mr.D.

Typically, searching is the first thing I do, and I did it here to. I think I entered "snow leopard" and buy, rather than purchase. It didn't seem to return much in the way of helpful information for me. Why it didn't occur to me to try purchase also, I don't know. It was a really long day at work yesterday is the only decent excuse I can think of.

Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Well, I'm off to work and, later, to buy my copy of Snow Lion.

Everyone have a wonderful day.
