Donw35
I have been getting PM's about making these work so I though I would save some time and post it here, this is my solution, you may have a better one and that's great, I prefer my Hacks to have less hacking of kexts as possible. I gave up on trying to hack this machine into working, in Mountain Lion, three issues are going to be the sound, network and Sata. hacking kext files becomes a pain and just buying these parts is cheaper anyways. the real problem is the 7700 motherboard is 4+ years old and too locked down for non windows users. the kexts that did work in Lion where 32bit and will not work in ML, or at least I was unsuccessful in doing so. so, here is how I overcame the HP DC7700,7800,7900 short comings. (you must use a supported graphics card) Sound = http://amzn.com/B0027EMHM6 $3 Sata fix = http://amzn.com/B005B0A6ZS $17 (disable onboard sata, plug this in, works OOB + SATAIII support) Network = (lots of options here, wireless or wired) http://amzn.com/B0001NYJ58 $22, drivers available for this card from OSX86.net or wireless USB. Kexts used FakeSMC.kext IOAHCIBlockStorageinjector.kext NullCPUPowerManagement.kext <-will KP without it SleepEnabler.kext and of course a good DSDT.aml enjoy
mosslack
Unreal that you gave up on these systems. I have my DC7700 and DC7800 working very well indeed with both Lion and Mountain Lion. I did have to use a USB sound dongle on the DC7800 as I don't care for the VoodooHDA solution, but the Realtek ALC262 on the DC7700 should work just fine. The install is pretty simple and outlined here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Mp9g9oFPXLQhBbofosDocTuRGzBwTxN0EHznCaOdI2s/edit?pli=1 You do have to have a supported video card, but that is true of most Hackintosh systems. I believe you did some work early on in Snow Leopard, did that result in working audio?
PeterHaas
The DC7700 and DC7800 certainly have their issues, but the DC7900 is reasonably clean, except for LAN and audio. My DC7900 CMT runs Mountain Lion flawlessly using the Intel kext for LAN and an nVidia 8400GS for video and Voodoo for audio. One of mine was originally a DC7800 but was converted to a DC7900 by a mobo swap ($40, delivered, on eBay, using B-I-N). An E6850 proc. The other DC7900 CMT was built for (presumably) Microsoft, but was surplussed by them as brand-new, but unused systems. An E8400 proc. The brand-new DC7900 CMT was my main system for nearly a year. Alas, the LAN is sort of non-standard. The Audio definitely is non-standard. My subsequent systems have been 7-Series, with the proviso that the LAN HAS to be R8111, and the codec HAS to be ALC892 or ALC897. My own custom DSDT to allow any type of USB device to be inserted in any USB receptacle, adapted from Mieze's code. Too many Hacks, too little time. Toshiba has been a pain. everything except wireless works. can't tweak the bios. I have to turn off as restart or I have to reset bios to default every time I boot. up. Donw35
well I did kind of give up but not entirely, I wanted a Hackintosh in my garage for streaming and web access so I decided that the old DC7700 sff was the right PC for the job, small foot print. I wanted ML 10.8.3 on it so I got to work on the DSDT. This machine has the GT 430 video card and a $2 USB sound card, I can make voodooHDA work but its not very good and doesn't save its setting after reboot, Yes I tried to fix it but even if it works its still not as good as supported sound and I am streaming music from this machine to speakers in the back yard. so with this DSDT everything works, of course built in video and sound does not and the ethernet card only does 100MB speed The only Kext's I am using are FakeSMC, IOAHCIBlockStorageinjector, NullCPUPowerManagement,SleepEnabler and Intel82566MM to install ML I have my own method, I do not recommend or use distro's very simple, I have a MacBookPro, I install ML on an external hard drive via USB, install Chameleon boot loader, copy my Extra folder and put that drive in the DC 7700, boots right up and works great. very reliable Hack but slow, Geekbench is around 3600 on this 2.4Ghz C2D with 8gigs or ram. mosslack
I don't think anyone expects these machines to be fast, but they seem to be well built and will work very well for web surfing, email, etc. And they can be found for little money in most cases, I got my DC7700 for $49 with free shipping on ebay. The processor was a Pentium D 945, but I swapped an E4500 and it works great! I did get sound working under ML using the procedure and files here: http://www.osx86.net/view/3103-alc262_applehda_10.8_hp_dc7700.html But unfortunately it only works for ML, not Lion. I use VoodooHDA v. 0.2.1 under Lion which works fine. I use a cheap USB sound dongle on the DC7800. With it's Analog Devices codec it produced random KPs when booting using VoodooHDA .
