First of all, just listing the system specs doesn't allow anyone to truely know whether you will have any issues or not. If you're asking "Is this a good set of hardware to run OS X smoothly?", I would say absolutely. I actually purchased the 7520 model (Inspiron 15R Special Edition) and will most likely be installing OS X today or later this week, so I'll let you know the full details after that if you want. The hardware is very similar. The main difference I see here is that mine has ATI graphics, but video is usually the least of your worries when setting up a Hackintosh. I'll let you know how it goes...

Finally got the Inspiron 7720

I didn't manage to enable HD4000 (Even with tutorial) nor 650m (I heard it was supported natively but It is not (or if it is I would like to know)), Wifi obviously doesn't work OOT (no intel wifi card in MBP).

Got full resolution 1920x1080 by adding "Graphics Mode"="1920x1080x32" but no hardware acceleration.

Sound doesn't work. Ethernet doesn't work either (recognized (kind of, random KP) but no IP address).

Bluetooth is the only think which works natively... (No trackpad by the way, you will have to use the mouse after the install (although it works during installation)

I don't understand why there isn't any topic about the 650m, which is very common in the new MBP (There is a GTX680 Thread, why not 650m ?)

I installed it a day ago, that is why a few things works.

Hope someone could help us...

Hello,

I also got the 7720 yesterday and the first thing I tried after unboxing is installing ML :)

I used ML+Chameleon/Chimera/######, but all i get with either method (and trying all all available boot options) is the famous "still waiting for root device" error message. Can you explain which method with which settings you used to at least get a somewhat working installation to have a starting point for addressing the other issues?

Any help is appreciated,

Thomas

Try this post here. It's not the exact specs of your machine but should work. It worked on my MSi Notebook too. Just have to change my signature a bit now. :) Somehow or another the tutorial was all messed up, but I got it cleaned up for the most part. If you have issues with it pm me and I'll help as much as possible. ;)

I had this problem too... I had to use another stick to bypass the still waiting for root device (Altough the first stick used to work but I don't understand why it stopped working...) ;)

Haven't you guys ever done this before?? You need to get all the right kexts installed and all will work... I think I'm gonna go ahead and start mine now...

I have ever done this before with a desktop pc (9600GT, Core 2 Quad, Atheros Wifi, Asus motherboard and other stuffs) and EVERYTHING WORKED EVEN SLEEPING so don't tell me I haven't done that before... And no, you have sometimes have to patch the kext (like injecting some device id) to get it to work... I have the right kext for my HD4000 since it's supported natively thanks to the 2012 MBP but we have to patch it to enable QE/CI and I didn't manage to work...

I just bought the Inspiron 15 R SE 7520.

Managed to partially install it, but because I am so new to the hackintosh, I didn't know the right steps.

In my case, installing ML.

Here goes:

1) create the installer boot stick

2) inject the following kexts

2870-DP3.kexts.zip

2870-PXHCDv1.0.8.kext.zip

(these two all from here http://www.osx86.net...do=file&id=2870)

PS2 kexts.zip

(from http://www.insanelym...1)

the first 2 to allow the use of USB 3.0, hence eliminating the "waiting for root device"

the last for the inbuild keyboard and trackpad.

3)Install as usual (partitioning, bla,bla as per this guide

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=280756

Edit: boot using parameter -v GraphicsEnabler=No PCIRootUID=0

I got it installed and boot to usb again and select the OS disk , which is a wrong step.

I must do this with the Kexts (as per the guide)

3.B Fixing the OS X install

1. From the installer go to Utilities and Terminal.

2. Type cp –R /System/Library/Extensions/NullCPUPowerManagement.kext /Volumes/"OS X"/System/Library/Extensions/

3. Type cp –R /System/Library/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext /Volumes/"OS X"/System/Library/Extensions/

3b. Type cp –R /System/Library/Extensions/<those kexts> /Volumes/"OS X"/System/Library/Extensions/

4. Type reboot

I was too stupid to think once I injected the kexts to the installer USB, it will get installed to the HDD during install.

So, this is where I stop today.

I will continue with more (DSDT stuff) once I get further.

Edit: Continue

Ok, I am supposed to put the Essential stuff from the guide linked to above.

Unzipped them into the installer USB stick,

I boot from USB but select the HDD, successfully boot into and continue with the install/setup with keyboard and trackpad working.

So far so good.

As per the guide,

Part 4 – Booting ML

1. Reboot your system and boot to the USB stick again but this time select your OS X install. This should boot you into your installed copy of ML.

2. Open "System Preferences" go-to "Security and Privacy", click the lock and give it your password then set "Allow applications downloaded from" to anywhere.

3. Navigate to your folder of essential software and run the chameleon package, install it to your OS X drive.

4. Copy the Extra folder on your USB drive to the root of your HDD (open Finder -> Go -> Computer -> OS X -> paste folder).

5. Reboot and let the computer boot from your HDD, select OS X and it should boot straight to ML.

No, didn't happen.

I get

boot0: GPT

boot0: test

boot0: test

boot0: GPT

boot0: test

boot0: test

boot0: error

I read that this could be due the 4K sector disk, I have a 1TB WD disk in the Inspiron,

so now testing this method:

so, using my ubuntu netbook boot usb, I did the dd command

done, reboot and get a proper boot greeting,

supplied the -v GraphicsEnabler=No PCIRootUID=0

Ok, I need more readings, or if anyone can help.

1) when boot from USB stick and choose my HDD, I boot with working trackpad and keyboard, but when boot off HDD, trackpad is not working. How is this explained?

2) My ethernet card is detected and has mac address, but I can't connect to my LAN. Neither DHCP nor manually set. I need to sniff the traffic but pulling my hair now

3) DSDT Editor can't run, need Java, and I have no network. Stressed...

1) It's the same case for me, I tried to copy the trackpad .kext from Extra/Extensions (I've installed Chimera 1.11.1) to System/Library/Extensions. It worked partially because it made "random moves" when you touch the trackpad... Now it doesn't work anymore and i don't know why...

2) Also the same thing, plus some random kernel panics due to the Ethernet card kext... (Realtek8189something.kext)

3) You need to download Java for mac here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1515 : Put it on a USB/External HDD/whateveryouwant and DSDT Editor should work. :)

Hi ThibaultAnd,

I will try the java today.

I am still a noob in this stuff.

What actually the DSDT Editor will do for me.

The other guide wasn't so clear for me. It gather my device details? and how does it help adding drivers for me.

Also the guide didn't mention anything about #####.

Do I need that to get my devices detected as well.

Very puzzling about the trackpad thing. It wasn't working in usb installer until I put the PS2 kext, and yet the same PS2 kext doesn't work in the HDD.

Edit: also, can you guide me on how to get my display working nicely. Mine also HD4000 and nvidia 650M

Now I use the GraphicsEnabler=No option on boot.

Hi rpriyana,

Using DSDT Editor will help you to edit your DSDT and patch it so your hardware could be "better" supported : once you patch your dsdt and put it in Chimera, it will recognize the hardware but it doesn't mean it will works since you always need the use of kext. It's not compulsory, but it's better if your dsdt is patched (faster boot, less kernel panics)

I didn't patched myself, rampagedev actually patched for me, so if you need help about dsdt patching or DSDT Editor, just ask him ;).

I'm stuck on not getting fully hardware acceleration... I only just get full resolution by adding GraphicsMode="1920x1080x32" in the boot.plist.

Hi !

I Have an Inspiron 17 R Notebook, and I have gotten HD4000 to work with acceleration and the DSDT posted in this post.

Here is what I added to my org.chameleon.Boot.plist :

<key>device-properties</key>
<string>7f0000000100000001000000730000000200000002010c00d041030a000000000101060000027fff04002c0000004100410050004c002c00690067002d0070006c006100740066006f0072006d002d006900640000000800000004006601140000006800640061002d0067006600780000000d0000006f6e626f6172642d31</string>

This is described as the 01660004 option described here :

http://www.tonymacx8...ble-hd4000.html

My acceleration is functioning properly with semi-transparent menu bar and all.

So now we need to figure out how to get the nVidia 650m :)

Hope this helps someone :)

Hi ThibaultAnd,

Yes, I have got his reply with edited DSDT.aml, so no need to do further patching on DSDT? He seems to say it was just cleaned up to basic or something?

And we have very similar hardware, although I I only have 1366x726x32 display.

Can you share with me what other kexts you are adding, apart from perhaps the PS2 and the DP3/PXHCD ?

Thanks Ole,

I will add that string.

Did you get your trackpad working as well?

I might want to get wifi dongle as well. Been thinking about either doing that or get a AR5B195 combo card, but need to dismantle quite a bit of the new laptop.

BTW,

Any of you guys use smbios.plist ? which one works for the 17R SE?

Hi oletorvmark,

Thank you very much ! It's glad to see someone getting hardware acceleration with this laptop ! :) I will try it after work. If I understand, you added that little EFI injection and it worked ?

By the way, since we are on a 17R SE Thread, did you manage to get other things working ? For instance the ethernet or the sound ? (or the trackpad :P)

Thanks again !

I didn't use extra .kexts but I used MacBookPro10,1 smbios that I created since I didn't found it on the web. I didn't see any difference, though. I'll upload it later.

Thanks ThibaultAnd for the files. I will try it out.

When you said you didn't use any extra kexts, you still use the PXHCD and the PS2 one, right?

So with just the DSDT.aml from Andrew K, it doesn't come with full accell?

I tried the string, but my screen got jumbled. I guess because I have 1366x768x32 unlike you guys (I have 15R SE, similar specs, although I was wrong about the GT650M, I have a Radeon 7730M instead, but anyway it is not in use).

Should I be just going through the few strings and see which one works?

I also still have no luck with trackpad and ethernet. Wifi and bluetooth is forgone conclusion, so I ordered a AR5B195 and will see how it goes when it arrived.

One more thing, you guys get USB 3.0 working fine for storage?

When I plug in my USB 2.0 thumbdrive just after boot, it will be accessible.

But if I plug it in after it is fully boot up, my GUI just freeze.

Also, you guys managed to get "sleep" working?

Thanks.

Yes i still use the PXHCD and the PS2 kexts.

Check another thread for your Graphic Card, we couldn't help you infortunately :/

Bluetooth worked out of the box, I can get my phone recognized with the hackintosh, but I don't know If I can do something with it

Tell us about your AR5B195 as soon as you get it :)

I tried to install some kext for usb 3.0 but my hackintosh freeze so I'll have to reinstall it again and I have to wait to get my usb key again...

I didn't to get sleep to work.

Another progress: Audio is working. I simply installed the voodooHDA 2.7.3 from http://code.google.c.../downloads/list

After that I had to rebuild the kextcache.....working fine!

Thank you iborg2000, that worked ! But I could't control the volume in iTunes, do you experience that problem too ?
