Perian not working properly anymore or something wrong on my hack?

Hi!

I just installed Perian today on mountain lion dp4 and found out that ac3 codec not works anymore... So those avi movies don't have sound.

Is Perian working for anyone on 10.8 ML DP4 perfectly?

Or do we need to use VLC from now?

...Last I heard, Perian was discontinued (more info on their site) and may not work with 10.8.

VLC and Mplayer are currently the most most popular playback projects that I know about. I personally like Mplayer2 more, but they share a similar codebase and both support playback on nearly all files.

Yeah, I don't think anyone uses Perian anymore regardless since quicktime as a stand alone player is mostly useless even with the "Swiss Army Knife" and apple gave up on making it any better after the Quicktime x/Quicktime 7 split. Had been using mplayer the past few years, but new VLC actually has a nice looking gui finally, especially if switched to the dark skin.

It's not just 10.8 DP4, but 10.7.4 as well. All encoded audio no longer work, just outputs to stereo or fuzz. HD audio players and VLC no longer output multi-channels over TosLink; the option is no longer available in the apps for Digital Out (encoded). I never really thought about it, but after reading this post (by chance) it got me thinking it may be a conflict. I will uninstall Perian and report back.

well, at the moment I'm using M-audio Transit usb with optical toslink to my receiver and tried VLC and it wouldn't output 5.1 but the USB connection may be an issue with it's spdif detection. I don't feel like swapping to my onboard optical just to test it, but Plex, which is what I use for all video that would be 5.1 anyway, plays Dolby Digital and DTS both perfectly fine in beautiful HD.
