I am a little 'information overloaded' here. I have been a PC technician for 14+ years, and with W8 coming out, I need something more stable other than a linux platform to run on my work laptop. I thought, well, all these people are putting MacOS on their PC's these days, and I bought myself an iPad and found that I love it. Visited the nearest Apple store, and loved using their computers - the only thing I did not love was the price tag.

Now before anyone says 'read', believe me I have been doing my research and tons of sites say yes it is possible, and others say no - so I have come to InsanelyMac because you folks seem to be the most informed.

I would like your expert opinion on how to go about doing this if at all possible. I can get an original Apple installation DVD if need be from a fellow technician. Here is what I am using for my work laptop...

MODEL: Gateway NV51B08u

CPU: AMD C-50 Dual Core (SSE 1, 2, 3, 3S, 4A, x86-64, AMD-V)

RAM: 6 GIG installed

HDD: 300 GIG

MAINBOARD: Gateway SJV50-BZ

CHIPSET: AMD A40/A50 Series FCH

SOUTHBRIDGE: AMD A40/A50 Series FCH

VIDEO: Radeon HD 6250 (integrated)

As I said, there is so much information out there, I have NO CLUE where to begin, or even if I SHOULD begin embarking on this project.

Any insight or assistance would be greatly appreciated from the community.

Thank You!

Probably a good starting point. Basically your gonna be looking at snow leopard with nawcoms mod cd / kernel.

Don't know how much success you'll have with the gfx card, your laptops hardly a typical osx86 rig.

I'd suggest you use a different hard drive to your windows one so you can swap it out and work on osx when you've free time. Don't try the "i'm gonna have osx on my laptop by the end of this weekend" approach, it takes time to make a stable osx rig.

I've never done anything with amd so someone else might chime in with better suggestions in a bit.

However if your reason for changing is because windows 8 is coming out why not stop on windows 7?

I would only recommend mac if you've specific need of it.

Personally I don't think anything compares for productivity to a well built & looked after w7 setup. I certainly wouldn't want to be doing any real work on an osx machine (seriously have you tried mac office?).

Just my 2 cents...
